Surly Abrasive Double IPA...$13.99 / 4pk cans
BREWED FOR: MORE HOPS. MORE, MORE, MORE.
A MASSIVE DOSE OF CITRA HOPS LAUNCHES OUR LEGENDARY DOUBLE IPA (MINNESOTA’S FIRST, AND A NOD TO OUR ABRASIVES FACTORY ORIGIN) INTO THE HOPHEAD STRATOSPHERE.
We originally brewed this beer at the end of 2008 to bid farewell to growler sales, only to underestimate the demand for the first double IPA in Minnesota. We brewed the beer again in spring 2009 and the rest is IPA history. Also history: 16 Grit, the beer’s first handle and a size of abrasive grit used at the old abrasives factory that houses the original Surly mothership in Brooklyn Center.

Amazing 2016 Favia Wines -huge scores from everyone!

Husband and wife duo Andy Erickson and Annie Favia are two of Napa Valley’s brightest stars—little wonder, given their backgrounds: Andy’s first winemaking job was at Newton, working with Chardonnay-producing legend John Kongsgaard, and then as Bob Levy’s assistant at Harlan, while Bond was being built. Later, he became the winemaker at Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Arietta, Dalla Valle, and, most recently, for Mayacamas. Annie’s viticultural work began with legendary grower David Abreu, where she had a hand in farming some of Napa’s greatest vineyards, like Ovid, Sloan, Bryant Family, Colgin, Harlan, Screaming Eagle, and Staglin.

2016 Favia La Magdalena Red Wine Napa Valley...$174.99
The 2016 La Magdalena is superb. Dense, pliant and richly textured, with supremely beautiful inner perfume and depth, the 2016 has so much to offer. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, wild flowers, espresso, mint, rose petal and spice notes abound in this mid-weight, yet deeply flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. Just as it was from barrel, La Magdalena is wonderfully lifted and nuanced..
Rated 97/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Slightly deeper and richer, with powerful notes of purple and blue fruits, the 2016 La Magdalena (55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers up complex spring flowers, violets, and graphite notes, full body, thrilling purity of fruit, present tannins, and a great, great finish. There’s plenty of underlying structure here and the cellar is going to be your friend. Regardless, it’s a gorgeous wine.
Rated 97/100 Jeb Dunnuck
This is rock-solid, with a beautiful core of cassis, plum preserves and raspberry pâte de fruit, framed by a light ganache note before ending with roasted apple wood and anise accents. The brambly energy is buried within, allowing the fruit and grip to meld steadily through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2020 through 2033. 276 cases made.
Rated 95/100 Wine Spectator
The 2016 La Magdalena is made up of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in barrel and a year in bottle. Very deep purple-black in color, it features wild blueberries, black cherries and cassis notions that spring from the glass with beautiful suggestions of lavender, pencil shavings and tilled black soil plus a waft of Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is fantastically bright and energetic with a solid backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Bottled without fining or filtration. 276 cases produced.
Rated 95+/100 Wine Advocate
Aromas of blueberries, minerals and black tea. Full bodied, tight and cool with a linear bead of fine tannins that draws you down. Racy and beautiful. Cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Drink after 2022.
Rated 95/100 James Suckling

2016 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville....$174.99
Favia's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is wonderfully vivid and alive in the glass. Black cherry, plum, tobacco, leather, smoke, licorice and grilled herbs infuse this potent, savory Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium in body and yet full of bold flavors, the 2016 has so much to offer. Today it is deep, vivid and supremely balanced, with all of the character it showed from barrel.
Rated 96/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the very deep purple-black colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville bursts forth with exuberant black cherries, crushed blackcurrants and black raspberries with touches of violets, camphor, damp soil and mossy bark plus a waft of black tea. Full and generous, with a rock-solid construction, it has layer upon layer of black and red fruits and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 343 cases produced.
Rated 96/100 Wine Advocate
The deep purple-colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville has classic blue fruit as well as plenty of green herbs, sage, tobacco, and graphite aromas and flavors. It’s another structured, vibrant, focused wine that needs bottle age.
Rated 96/100 Jeb Dunnuck
This is really pretty with blackcurrant and lead-pencil aromas and flavors. Solid core of fruit to the firm and lightly chewy tannins. It’s polished and so real. Focused. Needs four or five years to soften, but already a joy to taste. Try after 2024.
Rated 96/100 James Suckling
Ripe and vivid, with a stream of boysenberry, black currant and plum fruit racing along in lockstep, while anise, sage and singed tobacco notes fill in. The finish is underscored by graphite-edged grip, showing good latent energy. Powerful and pure. Best from 2021 through 2035. 342 cases made. — JM
Rated 95/100 Wine Spectator

2016 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville...$174.99
The gem in the 2016s is undeniably the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, which is all Cabernet Sauvignon from the Oakville Ranch vineyard located just above Dalla Valle. This monumental beauty boasts a deep inky color, a huge nose of crème de cassis, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings, and obvious rocky minerality, full-bodied richness, and tannins and structure galore. It’s going to be a candidate for perfection in 5-7 years and will see its 30th birthday in fine form. It’s a brilliant, brilliant wine.
Rated 99/100 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is another flat-out gorgeous wine from Favia that is just as compelling today as it was last year. Rich and resonant on the palate, with super-expressive inner perfume and impeccable balance, the 2016 simply has it all. Red cherry jam, mint, dried flowers, espresso and raspberry preserves infuse this vibrant, silky Cabernet Sauvignon.
Rated 97/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Dark and winey, with intense black currant, fig and blackberry puree flavors streaming through, supported by licorice snap and bramble notes and backed by energetic, tarry grip on the back end. This is dense, but shows lots of kick. Best from 2020 through 2035. 326 cases made.
Rated 95/100 Wine Spectator
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville comes from Oakville Ranch, perched just below Ovid on Pritchard hill and above Dalla Valle. Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a very deep purple-black color and comes charging out of the glass with vivacious blackberries, blueberry compote and cassis scents with hints of violets, oolong tea, cigar box and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, the power of this wine comes purely from intensity, with rock-solid, wonderfully ripe tannins and fantastic freshness to support and lift the very long, perfumed finish. 327 cases produced.
Rated 97/100 Wine Advocate
This is a really exciting red that shows wonderful opulence of blue fruit and minerals with some walnuts. It’s full-bodied with intense tannins and fruit, yet it tightens down at the finish. Remains cool and poised. Try after 2022.
Rated 98/100 James Suckling
