New Deveron 12 Year Old

Deveron 12 Year Highland Single Malt Scotch...$37.99
Glasgow, Scotland, 3rd September 2015 – John Dewar & Sons Ltd. has announced the release of The Deveron single malt which hails from MacDuff distillery, located on the northern edge of Aberdeenshire.

Located where the river meets the sea, Macduff distillery sits near the mouth of the River Deveron, shortly before its cool waters join the restless surge of the North Sea. Sheltered from the worst of the seaboard storms and winter winds, this tranquil spot has seen the creation of The Deveron malt whisky for many a decade.

A comparatively modern distillery – its spirit first began to flow in 1960 – Macduff was brought into being mainly for the purpose of supplying malt whisky to the blending industry. It was commissioned by a consortium of four businessmen, who called themselves Glen Deveron Distillers Ltd.

Emanating from five small copper pot stills, and unusual horizontal condensers that gently coax extra character from the spirit, The Deveron is an approachable dram which has a tang of coastal air about it. The distillery is set up for a light, fruity spirit that’s replete with apple tones and nutty notes.

Stephen Marshall, Bacardi’s Global Marketing Manager – Single Malts remarks: “The final one. We’ve done it and it tastes great. People underestimate the quality of whisky that can be made at a comparatively modern distillery, this is really top notch stuff. Get yourself up to Macduff, or if you can’t then stick Local Hero on the telly and pour yourself a dram”.

Tasting Notes: The Deveron 12 Years Old, 40% ABV
When billows break and haar ghosts in, then haste ye home or some bit warm, Unwind with toasted grain and apples, seaborne spice; calm from the storm.

The single malt brand of THE DEVERON is part of the portfolio of Bacardi Limited, headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda. Bacardi Limited refers to the Bacardi group of companies, including Bacardi International Limited. www.TheDeveron.com

Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered - 94 Points

2013 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay...$35.98
John Kongsgaard told me that when the unfiltered Chardonnay from Newton was first launched in the early 1980s, the fruit came entirely from what is now the Judge Vineyard of Kongsgaard. No wonder that wine was so spectacular in those days. It also had an incredible aging curve as well. This wine continues to be a strong effort. The 2013 Chardonnay Unfiltered exhibits notes of white peach, honeysuckle and some brioche in a medium to full-bodied, lusciously fruity, rich, complex and full style. It doesn’t have the minerality of the old days of the early 1980s, but this is a brilliant Chardonnay, representing one of Napa’s finest efforts.

Caymus scores big in the new Wine Advocate by Robert Parker!!

2012 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon...$149.98
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection has a dense blackish/purple color and creamy, sweet crème de cassis fruit, blackberries, a touch of graphite and vanilla, This exuberant, boisterous, in-your-face style of Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly a fruit bomb, so be warned. Full-bodied and opulent with stunning concentration and richness, the wine has no hard edges and is much in the Caymus style of terrific fruit intensity (most of it black and blue), voluptuous texture, and a stunning finish with plenty of glycerin, wood and spice. The alcohol on the label is listed at 14.8%, which seems about accurate. I have Caymus Special Selection in my cellar back to some of the historic wines made by Chuck Wagner’s father in the early 1970s, and while the style’s gotten more precocious and consumer-friendly, these wines, even the more latter-day styles, have a tendency to age beautifully. This can be drunk now, or cellared for 20+ years.

2013 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon....$65.98
A beautiful ripe, plump, fat and opulent style of Cabernet Sauvignon that Caymus has pioneered, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has a dense purple color, loads of juicy blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, low acidity and no real evidence of oak, but a nice, plush, full-bodied opulence. This is irresistible, especially for a Cabernet Sauvignon coming in at 14.9% natural alcohol. Drink it over the next decade or more.

What a spirit…it has to be faced with a bit of melancholy, as the emigrant looking back trying to bear in mind the image of the native land that is leaving. It is deep and harmonious as the indecipherable horizon, “It is not understandable where the sky and the earth end” . It fascinates just by looking at it, do not spoil it by drinking. Once you overcome the hesitation, drink it with a bit of regret. At the nose a whirlwind of harbor scents, it is like walking in the Venice of the eighteenth century. Beautiful, perfumed and powdered ladies walking in the alley brackishon the lagoon. Powder, iodine, peat, firewood burning… is the overture of the symphony that is unleashed in mouth. Hints of mint freshly roasted coffee, marjoram and spices. Lasting and pungent, the little extra alcohol helps with elegance the complex structure of this spirits. Please don’t drink too hastily.

Takes part in all the races. He is there, ready to go… with a smile. The bike shining. Race after race without thinking about the victory. He is there… to greatly sweat and toil only for the infinite pleasure of running. A mixture of suffering and lightness. Fatigue and joy. This Miltonduff made me immediately think a cyclist that with his elegant and proud pace hits the road thinking only the wind that caresses his face. Thoughtful, serious and intriguing. Its large bouquet opens in mineral, fruity and vegetal notes with licorice ending. Great character with an intense flavor and graceful.

Samaroli by Samaroli Blended Scotch Whisky...$94.99
  • Distilled: 2008
  • Bottled: 2015
  • Age: 7 Years Old
  • Only 600 bottles produced
Younger brother of the two Speyside assemblies bottled in 2015. A 7 years old boy restless, who escapes into the glass with a frenetic pace like the child who screams loudly “special edition” standing out among the bustle of the city. The first scents and perfumes sting the nostrils. Seaweed, iodine and especially fresh ink… just thrown on paper as did the newspapers printing once when the presses were printing thousands of copies all night. In the mouth balsamic, spicy, smoked herring stimulate the pungent. All this is repeated with metal rhythm, precise and provocative.

Very elegant pear extract backed up by a vein of pleasant smooth alcohol that prolongs the multidimensional sensation endlessly. This spirit is a promenade that transports you mind and soul to heights of Absolute Quality that are very hard to find. Reputedly the highest village in Highlands, standing at 345 metres (1,132 feet) above sea level. In Gaelic Tom an t-Sabhail means hillock of the barn and is a village in the Moray Council zone; in 1975 it became part of Banffshire and its population has dropped from approximately 1,700 (in 1841) to just 322 inhabitants in the 2001 census. In spit of being very small, the charming village is included in the Whisky Trail, along with Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin and Marypark. The surrounding countryside is the Glenlivet Estate The Tomintoul distillery was the result of the fusion of two Glasgow whisky broking firms. The distillery, launched in the early sixties, is obviously modern and its design won the approval of the Royal Fine Art Commission. It is located on a plateau in the hills below the village. Tomintoul was the third “new” distillery to be built in the 20th century. In 1974 its stills were increased to two pairs. Whisky stocks are estimated at approximately 80,000 casks, of which some date back to the first year of production (1965).

While its "everyday home version" is about 7% ABV, its historic brew goes back up to over 9%!

Schlafly Irish Style Extra Stout - new package this year!

Schlafly Irish Style Extra Stout...$9.99 / 6pk
Our Irish-Style Extra Stout amplifies the traditional drier versions from Ireland for a bolder, black brew. The addition of both roasted barley and Dark Crystal malted barley give Extra Stout undertones of chocolate, molasses and dried fruit. The beer is generously hopped with East Kent Goldings to balance the sweetness from the malted barley.
Extra Stout is a descendent of the British and Irish porters of the 18th Century. These strong porters eventually became known as strong stout, then Foreign Stout or Extra Stout, depending on origin. Extra Stouts were exported world-wide, gaining popularity in the West Indies, Africa and parts of Asia.

4 Hands Madagascar....$15.99

Oskar Blues Hotbox Coffee Porter...$10.99 / 4pk

Firestone Walker Nineteen...$19.99
During the dog days of the autumn grape harvest, thirsty overworked winemakers are fond of saying, “It takes a lot of beer to make great wine.” But at Firestone Walker Brewing Company, the opposite is also true. Each August, we invite close local winemaker friends to help us blend our next Anniversary Ale from as many as eight separate barrel-‐aged component beers. Their input is invaluable, as this project is all about creating cohesion and complexity from an array of diverse beers. The result is a masterful blend, the sum being greater than the parts.

Final Blend:
Parabola (13% ABV) Aged in Bourbon Barrels: 33.33% of the final blend
Stickee Monkee (12.3% ABV) Aged in Bourbon and Brandy Barrels: 33.33% of the final blend
Bravo (12.9% ABV) Aged in Bourbon and Brandy Barrels: 16.66% of the final blend
Velvet Merkin (8.5% ABV) Aged in Bourbon Barrels: 16.66% of the final blend

The Finished Piece
As a finished beer, XIX is a rich, chocolaty, chewy brew with brandy-soaked raisin and holiday fruitcake flavors. The blend is anchored by equal parts Stickee Monkee and Parabola, which combine to create a dense chocolate truffle-like base. Velvet Merkin and Bravo lend their spicy oak, leather and fruity accents to complete the brew. The beer is unfiltered and unfined so there will be a small amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. XIX is best enjoyed poured carefully into a half-filled brandy snifter or wine glass. Allow it to warm to 55F to fully enjoy the pleasing and complex aromas.

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager Imperial Lager...$6.99 / 22oz

ABV: 7.0%
With craft beer shelves dominated by IPAs, some consumers are looking for something different. That’s why Sudwerk Brewing Co. created Rye of the Lager, an IPL it calls “a needle in the shelf stack.”

“It’s the first rye India Pale Lager available at stores on the West Coast that I’m aware of,” said Trent Yackzan, co-owner of the 25-year-old brewery that is redefining the American lager.

With ales, naturally occurring esters can at times compete against other ingredients, especially in the finish. That’s not the case here. In contrast, lager yeast provides a platform to let the other ingredients shine through. Stone fruit aromatics combine with lemon and pepper flavors, a pleasant blend of spice, and a bold finish. The fruity, subtle flavor from Simcoe and Amarillo hops balances with the dry spiciness of the rye. (7.0 ABV, 70 IBU)

Rye of the Lager is the culmination of more than a year of trial batches, in search of the perfect balance. Last fall’s small batch released at the Sudwerk taproom, The Dock, was so well received, “we knew this was the beer that should become our next year-round West Coast lager,” Yackzan said.
