Ego Goru Monastrell Jumilla

2016 Ego Goru Monastrell Jumilla...$11.99
75% Monastrell  25% Cabernet
This muscular red shows an austere character, offering loamy earth, anise, espresso and mineral flavors that frame a core of currant and cocoa. The tannins are ripe, with enough acidity to keep this balanced. Reserved but rich. Drink now through 2031. 8,500 cases made, 4,400 cases imported. — TM

Chave Hermitage Blanc

2018 Chave Hermitage Blanc...$279.99

The 2018 Hermitage Blanc was still in its various components, so my rating and description is something of a composite, based on barrel-tasting lots from Péléat, Les Rocoules and L'Ermite. There's incredible weight, ripeness and richness throughout, with hints of toast and crocuses accenting white peach, melon and pineapple fruit, yet also a sense of vibrance and briny freshness on the lengthy finishes.
Rated 95-97/100 Wine Advocate
I was able to taste the 2018 Hermitage Blanc from multiple barrels and tank, and I continue to think Jean-Louis fashions one of the greatest whites on planet earth. Gorgeous white flowers, honeysuckle, ripe quince, and toasted almond notes dominate the bouquet, and it has that rare mix of richness and opulence paired with incredible purity, freshness, and focus. It has a wealth of material yet also shows the vintage’s more rounded, sexy style. Plan on drinking bottles on release and over the following 2-4 years or hold off for a decade. It’s certainly in the same ballpark as the 2017.
Rated 96-98/100 Jeb Dunnuck
The thickness of the skins on Chave’s old vine parcels is what gives this wine its unrestricted depth and intensity, as well as it s ability to age for a very long time. Aromas run from very pretty and floral, through peaches and lemons and into crushed and grilled nuts. The palate is such a textural essay with an attractively youthful and pithy shunt of tannin that underwrites a considerably long finish and long cellaring potential. Age and try from 2030.
Rated 96-97/100 James Suckling
Tasted in components. #1) Rocoules Haut: A touch of iodine, smoky, mineral-accented orchard and pit fruits on the nose and palate. Chewy and precise, with no excess fat and a building mineral flourish. #2) Rocoules mid-slope: Taut and energetic in style, showing very good depth to its juicy Anjou pear, yellow apple and honeysuckle flavors. Plays richness off of energy with a steady hand. #3) Rocoules Bas: Nectarine, honey and floral qualities are sharpened by a suggestion of orange zest. Weighty yet precise, with a jolt of minerality adding back-end grip. #4) Peleat: Lively and precise, offering intense citrus, orchard fruit flavors, building iodine and smoky mineral nuances. Very long and tight, with a sexy floral nuance emerging steadily. #5) Peleat old vines: Deeply perfumed pear nectar and orange marmalade qualities on the nose and palate. Becomes livelier with a bit of air and shows fine delineation on the back half. These vines are at least 120 years old, Jean-Louis Chave told me. #6) Ermite: Emphatically mineral and precise on the nose, displaying vibrant Meyer lemon, white peach and floral qualities and a strong mineral overtone. Chewy and tightly wound, with superb depth, serious closing energy and repeating florality.

De Ranke Beers

De Ranke is  back
A few new ones and a few classics!

De Ranke Mirakel...$18.99 / 750ml
As big fans of geuze-style beers, we wanted to give our own spontaneous fermentation beer a go. To our own surprise, with success. Aside from our own Spierelambiek - our spontaneously fermented beer named after a tiny river that runs near the brewery - we use two traditional lambieks from the valley of the Senne (close to Brussels) to make a blend. One, two and three year old lambieks are used in Mirakel, our own miracle.

De Ranke Simplex...$4.79 / 11.2oz
Despite Simplex being an ale, it has all the characteristics of an old-styled pils. It is a blond, unfiltered, unpasteurized, hoppy and bitter beer that remains low in alcohol. Resulting in a straw blonde, highly drinkable beer with plenty of flavor and character.
Taste: Refreshing, light and with a firm bitterness

De Ranke XX Bitter...$4.79 / 11.2oz
"The hoppiest and some say the very best beer of Belgium.
The De Ranke brewery was founded by two good friends, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos. Their story is a classic in Belgium, where the very best craft brewing usually begins as a passionately pursued hobby, not an occupation. For Nino and Guido, brewing is literally a weekend obsession. For a few hours on Friday and Saturday, every week, the marvelous turn-of-the-century Deca Brewery in West Flanders is turned over to the De Ranke brewers, who make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers of Belgium. Their beers are robust and flavorful, and famous for their massive hoppiness.
XX Bitter is a very weighty beer, aggressively brewed to be the hoppiest in Belgium. Some more delicate palates are put off right away. Those warriors who accept the challenge, and take time to sort through the barrage of sensory impressions, usually end up loving it. It is first of all remarkably hoppy – and it persists in its hoppiness unto the bitter end – but it does not want for balancing maltiness. In the middle is a “barnyard” Brettanomyces yeast character that is very reminiscent of Orval in its heyday.

De Ranke XXX Bitter Hoppy Golden Ale...$15.99 / 750ml
You might say this beer is Orval with everything turned up to 11, which is exactly what the brewers were seeking." -- importer
XXX-Bitter is a variation on the existing XX-bitter, where we add an additional 50% more hops.
Taste: Full-bodied bitter beer. Despite its higher IBU-value, the large amount of aroma-hops makes this beer taste smoother than XX.

Brasserie de la Senne Bruzellensis

Brasserie de la Senne Bruzellensis Local Brett Beer...$5.99 / 11.2oz bottle
From the brewer:
“Here it is!! Our latest baby, of which we are very proud: the BRUXELLENSIS, 4 months bottle refermented with 100% Brussels Brettanomyces yeast.

Amber colored with copper reflections, very fruity (pineapple and red fruits), sustained by hop flavors and complex notes of old leather. In spite of its 6,5%, its dry and bitter finish makes it a surprising thirst-quencher.”
Style: Belgian Ale
ABV: 6.50%

Fantome Saison

Fantome Saison....$14.99 / 750ml
Fruity, complex saison beer from the Ardennes forest from a tiny farmhouse brewery very hard to find even in Belgium.
8% alc. by volume, with a wonderfully musty and characterful aroma. “Absolutely gorgeous, complex summer refresher with enough interest to drink all year-round.” (The Beers of Wallonia). Both authors give this beer a perfect 10. We would not give it a 10 (even if we knew what that meant) but there are drinkers out there who believe this is the “Nectar of the Gods.” Certainly, no other brewer makes beer like this, in Belgium or anywhere.
How many beers of 8% plus offer such fresh fruitiness? A solid Belgian saison beer at its base, with an unusual overlay of fruitiness.

Blaugies Darbyste Bier

Blaugies Darbyste Bier...$9.99 / 375ml
A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a ‘soft drink’ they insisted was just fig juice . . .
The Blaugies Darbyste is a saison made with wheat and fermented with fig juice. A variant of the Belgian “Wit” or “Blanche” style, but a little drier and a lot more substantial and flavorful. In his Beer Companion, Michael Jackson notes the burgeoning interest in the Belgian style of wheat beers in the U.S. and elsewhere, and adds hopefully that “perhaps an acute traditionalist will bring back the use of figs as a fermentable material.”

The brewery at Blaugies has answered the call. According to Jackson, “The figs are not evident in the flavor, which is light, lemony and dry.” This is a great beer for summer – and the best “blanche biere” of Belgium. Very spritzy, as a saison should be – be careful popping the cork.

Bodegas Valderiz Juegabolos Ribera del Duero

2015 Bodegas Valderiz Juegabolos Ribero del Duero...$57.99
A very fresh array of mulberries and boysenberries with sweet, spicy oak adding early interest. The texture on the palate is impressive with a swathe of smooth, velvety tannins. Bright and tight. Drink or hold.
Rated 94/100 James Suckling
The showy and exuberant 2015 Juegabolos displays more spicy and smoky notes after some time in the glass, but the nose has a great mixture of wild flowers and herbs and resembles the landscape of Ribera del Duero in a year like 2018 when the fields are full of fragrant flowers and everything is green and not dry. It has a powerful yet balanced palate in an elegant mix that fills your mouth and leaves a notable aftertaste. It should age effortlessly in bottle. 8,300 bottles were filled in December 2017.
Rated 93/100 The Wine Advocate

2017 Bodegas Valderiz Juegabolos
Ribero del Duero...$57.99
The grapes come from the Juegabolos (Bowls Players) terroir planted by Tomás Esteban in 1988. The unique character of this terroir is that the top 1.5 metres of soil is gravel. This creates perfect conditions for ripening in a very healthy environment. Lower down in the soil profile there is clay which provides the vines with all the nutrients and water that they need. The production is 4,000 kg per hectare. It is totally free of artificial fertilisers and systematic chemical treatments.

The fermentation process is very gentle without intensive extraction in stainless steel tanks with a 10,000 kg capacity. During the process no enzymes or yeasts are used that do not originate in the grapes.

VARIETY: 100% tinta del país
AGEING: 36 months
TYPE OF WOOD: 80% French oak, 20% new American oak barrels.
