Chocolate covered bread!!!

Back in stock......

Companion Breaded Bliss
"Looking for a salty and sweet way to treat yourself? If you answered “yes” (and why wouldn’t you?), we have great news for you. Companion has teamed up with St. Louis’ favorite chocolatier, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company, to create Breaded Bliss, a chocolate-covered creation that is being described as the perfect marriage of creamy, dark chocolate and crunchy, toasted bread.  We started with our always-fresh toasted bread, covered it in rich chocolate, and added a pinch of natural sea salt for good measure. The result is a treat that is as delightful as its name implies." -- Companion

We will be tasting them at our Grand Opening of our New Ballas location this Saturday. -- click here to read more.

Founders CBS update

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout official release date is October 3
(which means we will get ours on Tuesday October 4, we are not taking pre-reservations.  We will offer it when it arrives. Watch our blog / facebook / twitter / emails for updates on how to get it)

Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 19, 2011—Founders Brewing Co. Vice President/Director of Marketing Dave Engbers announced today that the highly anticipated Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) will be the second release in the company’s 750mL “Backstage Series”. It will be released to the market on October 3, 2011, with a taproom release party on October 1.
There has been a great deal of anticipation and speculation regarding the upcoming release after the success of Blushing Monk, the series’ debut, earlier this year. Canadian Breakfast Stout is the epitome of why Founders launched the Backstage Series: it brings some of the brewery’s most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.
"Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates and then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup. The final product has had stellar reviews and currently is the 5th highest rated beer in the world on BeerAdvocate.
As co-founder Dave Engbers explains, “Releasing small specialty batches is a great way for us to connect to our core beer enthusiast. Fundamentally, we are a small brewery that loves to do things our own way. This isn’t about flooding the shelves with a beer that we hope people will try; it’s about producing the best damn beer we can brew and offering it to those enthusiasts that have supported our passion for great beer.”
While we aren't ready to release the next beers in our Backstage Series, we maintain that it will consist of "popular one-offs” that have been offered in the taproom over the years and have become favorites among patrons and brewery staff.
“I think part of what people love about Founders, besides our beer, is that we listen to what they are saying,” says President Mike Stevens. “With our new line, now we can offer them more of what they’ve been asking for.”
We expect to release one additional product in the 2011 Backstage Series later this year and 3 more release in 2012." -- Founders

Januik - great Washington wines

Great scores, great wines, and minuscule production

2008 Januik Merlot Klipsun Vineyard...$29.99
Tight, focused and impressive for the depth of its cherry, currant, espresso and wet slate flavors, which are coiled tautly on the expressive finish, playing against a layer of refined tannins. Best from 2013 through 2018. 199 cases made. –HS
Rated 92/100 The Wine Spectator

2008 Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia...$29.99

"Tightly wound, its blueberry, plum and crème brûlée flavors riding aristocratically over a layer of refined tannins. The finish persists and expands as it hints at mineral and wet earth. Best from 2013 through 2018. 1,553 cases made. –HS"
Rated 94/100 The Wine Spectator

2008 Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Champoux....$48.99

Firm in texture, lithe in structure, with tightly packed currant, boysenberry and spice flavors. Hints at sage as the finish lingers. Drink now through 2018. 377 cases made. –HS
Rated 93/100 The Wine Spectator

2008 Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval...$39.99

This dense red is focused like a laser, aiming its raspberry, cherry, pomegranate and star anise flavors to shine through a veil of refined tannins. Persists impressively on the expressive finish. The tannins have texture but not weight, and the finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2018. 195 cases made. –HS
Rated 94/100 The Wine Spectator

Amazing Rhones

This is Robert Parker's highest scoring Cotes du Rhone in 2009...

2009 Chateau de Segries Cotes du Rhone Clos de l'Hermitage....$29.99

Although expensive, one of the top wines of the Cotes du Rhone appellation is the 2009 Clos de l’Hermitage. A wine that consistently over-delivers, this stunningly concentrated wine, made from equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre aged nine months in oak barrels, has a dense ruby/purple color and a big, sweet kiss of black truffle, blackberry, cassis, licorice, and subtle barbecue smoke. Even a note of graphite seems to make an appearance in this wine, which comes close to being internationally styled but holds back as its Provencal typicity of spice box, herbs, lavender and kirsch emerges. This full-bodied beauty is powerful, rich, and capable of lasting a decade or more. Wines from this well-known estate of nearly 110 acres continue to go from strength to strength. The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive.

Rated 93/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2009 Château de Ségriès Lirac Rouge Cuvée Réservée....$19.99
50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan.
"More serious, structured, and meaty (than the CDR) is the 2009 Lirac Cuvee Reservee. Fifty percent Grenache, 30% Syrah and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre and Carignan, this has more earthy, foresty notes, an opaque ruby/purple color, hints of incense, blue and black fruits, medium body and light to moderate tannin in the finish. It is just becoming drinkable yet should age reasonably well for 5-7 years. The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Menabrea...

The Italian beer maker Menabrea steps it up with some new beers...

Menabrea Top Restaurant Blond 3.5...$9.49 / 750ml
Menebrea Top Restaurant Amber 7.5....$9.99 / 750ml

"The Menabrea brewery was founded in 1846 by John Joseph Menabrea of Gresoney, who built his brewery in Biella at the foothills of the Alps. The brewery has survived two World Wars and, having been passed from father to son for several generations, it is still managed by the same family today. Devoted to quality, Menabrea is an Italian micro-brewery, roughly producing in a year the same amount the large breweries produce in only a few days. The beer making process at Menabrea is kept very traditional and all beers age a minimum of 45 days before bottling. Most of its ancient cellars, where fermentation and aging take place in Slovenian oak, are located underground. Italy’s oldest brewery is world-renowned for beer of the highest quality and tradition, using pure water from the Alps that flows naturally to the brewery. Menabrea is made with the highest quality barley and hops and their slow brewing process has assisted Menabrea in becoming a three-time winner of the Gold medal at the World Beer Championships as the best pale lager."

WE ARE OPEN!!!!!!!

Whew. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears, but we are finally brewing the best craft beer in the nation. With a lot of help from a lot of great people, the Napa Smith Brewery is officially up and running.

We have decided to release three types of beer for your enjoyment.

Our Amber Ale is rich and complex. It starts out slightly sweet, and progresses to a clean dry finish. It is a full bodied beer that you can serve with a hearty cut of meat, spicy barbeque or Thai food.

Our Pale Ale is medium - bodied with fragrant aromas with just a hint of caramel. Try this one with some nachos and a burger when you are watching the Super bowl with your friends.

Napa Smith Wheat beer has a light and clean taste that is characteristic of this style. We have added special ingredients to accentuate the aromas beyond the hops and malt to insure a spicy, floral aroma with a light crisp finish. Serve this with a grilled piece of fresh fish or pork chops.

As we progress, we will be introducing new styles of beer to the family, and also some seasonal releases for your trial.

We look forward to having you join the Napa Smith Family of beer enthusiasts, and will be updating you on our progress.

4 Hands Brewing Co. tour

1220 S. 8Th Street, Saint Louis, MO 63104
Coming in a few months is 4 Hands Brewing Co. to Downtown St. Louis.   Owner, Kevin Lemp, was nice enough to invite me down for a tour today.    I am very excited to see them getting so close, you can almost taste the beer.    It was very interesting to hear what he has planned as far as the beer goes and how the space is going to look when it is done.  You can tell he has everything planned out to perfection.

They have some exciting beer planned for us to drink:

  • Blackberry Berlinger Weiss
  • Summer Saison
  • Espresso Imperial Stout
  • Divided Sky Rye IPA
  • Single Speed Session
  • Big Oatmeal Brown
  • Reprise (single hop) Pale Ale - Centennial
  • Double IPA
  • Harvest Ale
  • Barrel Aged series (they plan 4 per year, 2 American Style, 2 Belgian Style)
  • plus much more...
I believe he said the bar area will have about 10 tap handles featuring their own beers plus about 4 "guest" beer tap handles.

"4 Hands Brewing Company, located in St. Louis Missouri, will provide the craft beer enthusiast a handcrafted portfolio inspired by the American Craft movement as well as Traditional Belgian and French style Farmhouse ales. 4 Hands Brewing Company will package the Core collection in 12 oz 6 packs, the Seasonal selection in 22 oz bottles, and the Barrel Aged program in 750 ml champagne bottles.  The Barrel Aged Program will produce a truly unique line of beers. The use of Wine And Spirit Barrels containing an array of adjuncts (fruit, herbs, spices) in conjunction with wild yeast strains will enhance the flavors to produce a one of a kind beer." -- 4 Hands Facebook page - like them now

Here are a few pictures from the tour....

This is the bar area in progress.

The next two pictures are the view from the bar.  You will be able to see into the brewing area while you are enjoying 4 Hands Co. beers.

This is the front of the bar.  The wood is from a barn that was over 100 years old.

The next two pictures are from the office upstairs.

Through this door and down the stairs will be the barrel aging room.

Here is look at a bottle of 4 Hands Co. Divided Sky Rye IPA (unfortunately there was no beer in it yet)

The Pumpkin ales just keep coming -- Schlafly Pumpkin Ale has also just arrived at Forsyth!

ABV:8.0%." -- Schlafly Brewery

Jefferson Rye is here

Very limited release....Back in stock!

We have 18 more bottles available now!!
Jefferson 's 10 Year Rye....$29.99

"The folks behind the Jefferson’s line of bourbons, including the outstanding Jefferson’s Presidential Select releases, told me they will be releasing a 10 year old 100% rye whiskey later this year at 94 proof. I tasted a pre-release. It reminded me of WhistlePig. I mean, it really reminded me of WhistlePig (hint!), but at a slightly lower proof (and what will be offered at the significantly lower price of about $35)."
