The top of the heap ---

This was the top rated California wine from 2008 in the new Wine Advocate Issue #199
2008 Ramey Pedregal Proprietary Red...$157.99
The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard brings together all of the elements of the Ramey house style. A beautiful, well-articulate bouquet melds into layers of dark fruit. Clean, vibrant mineral notes give the wine its energy and vitality. This is a typical Oakville Cabernet loaded with class and pedigree. Exotic spiced notes wrap around the textured, multi-dimensional finish. This is a dazzling showing. The 2008 Pedregal is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Petit Verdot aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.

Lost Abbey - New Belgium Collab..

This is an exciting label that got approved -- I am assuming since we get all of the Lips of Faith Series, that we will eventually see this one at The Wine and Cheese Place!!!

"The best part of collaboration is discovering mutual passions.  With Lost Abbey it was the wild yeast strain brettanomyces.  Using Belgian inspiration, we fermented the bier with brettanomyces to bring out tropical fruit notes, crisp haziness and bright flavor.  A touch of fruity sorachi ace hops pleases the palette and entices frequent sips." -- label

Not in stock now, but I will post when/if we get it!!

Six Row Brewing - St. Louis, Missouri

All 3 Six Row Beers are back in stock including more Double IPA.

In stock now and also online

Six Row Double IPA...$4.99 / 22oz
Our Double India Pale Ale is bigger in hop character and alcohol than our Extra Pale Ale. It is sure to please even the most discerning hop-head! Also known as Imperial IPA, this intensely hoppy, yet very drinkable beer lets the malty characteristics take a step back and allows the hops to really shine. Brewed with almost two (2) pounds of hops per barrel and left unfiltered, Six Row Double IPA showcases the citrusy and piney characteristics of the Columbus, Centennial, and Chinook hops.

(ABV: 8.4%, Bitterness Units: 68 IBUs, Color 8.0, Original Gravity: 18 degrees Plato.)

Six Row Porter....$3.79 / 22oz
Dark, malty, chocolaty, great hop aroma; all can be said of Six Row's Strong Porter. Strong because of the increased alcohol content, hop bitterness and aroma. The Strong Porter was brewed with authentic English malt alongside Black and Chocolate malt to add complexity. The deepness of the malt is complimented by East Kent Goldings and Fuggle hops to balance the slight sweetness typical of traditional English Porters.

(ABV: 5.22% , Bitterness Units: 36.7 IBU's, Color: 34.4, Original Gravity: 13.97 degrees Plato)

    Firestone Walker §ucaba
"Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses."

    2009 Gazin Pomerol...$89.99 -- SOLD OUT
A big, powerful, masculine Pomerol with a style not dissimilar from Le Gay, the dense purple-colored 2009 Gazin exhibits black currant, black cherry liqueur, coffee, roasted herb, an exotic Asian spice component, vanillin, creme caramel and toasty oak in its aromatics and flavors. From a vineyard near Petrus, Le Gay and La Fleur Petrus, it is full-bodied with licorice, earth, truffle and creme de cassis in the mouth. Give this powerful, backward 2009 an additional 6-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades.
    Rated 96/100 The Wine Advocate

    2009 Le Dome....$199.99
    SOLD OUT
One of the most distinctive wines made in Bordeaux, Le Dome has one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Franc of any claret I can think of. Composed of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, it exhibits a certain delicacy and elegance (due to the Cabernet Franc component) in addition to resounding power, concentration, depth and multidimensional personality. Black/purple to the rim, it offers strikingly intense notes of spring flowers, raspberries, mulberries and wood smoke, medium to full body, sweet tannin and a cunning intensity and texture that suggest finesse and delicacy. However, the wine’s richness, length and lingering depth build incrementally in this exceptional St.-Emilion. It will be drinkable in 4-5 years and should age for two decades or more. This is Jonathan Malthus’ finest wine to date.
    Rated 99/100 The Wine Advocate

    2009 Le Carre....$99.99
    SOLD OUT
Achieving nearly 15% natural alcohol (one of the highest of the Jonathan Maltus St. Emilion estates) , this blend of approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is from vineyards that sit on limestone soils near Clos Fourtet, an area that performed brilliantly in 2009. Inky purple, with notes of graphite, vanillin, blackberry and cassis as well as crushed rock and floral notes, the wine has breathtaking extravagance and a luxuriant fruit quality that simply has to be tasted to be believed. Phenomenally rich, full-bodied, and brilliantly poised and well-balanced, this is a tour de force in winemaking and a colossal Le Carre, the finest Jonathan Maltus has yet produced. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.
    Rated 97/100 The Wine Advoctae

    2009 Les Asteries....$139.99
    SOLD OUT
From vines sitting on hard limestone, this wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that offers prodigious levels of extract, richness, complexity and overall harmony. A fabulous wine, with black fruits galore intermixed with a liqueur of crushed rocks and spring flowers, the wine has plenty of tannin and is best cellared over at least 4-5 years and consumed over the following two decades.
This property, owned by Jonathan Maltus, is located 100 meters from his Le Carre, and of course the nearby Clos Fourtet, which produced a perfect wine in 2009.
    Rated 98/100 The Wine Advocate

    2009 La Bernadotte...$28.99
This blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best wines to yet come from this estate, owned by the proprietors of Pichon Lalande in Pauillac. Juicy, succulent, cedary black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, herbs and spice box are very pure, authoritative and substantial. Dark ruby/purple, medium to full-bodied and delicious, this wine should be drunk over the next 10-15 years. A sleeper.
    Rated 89/100 The Wine Advocate

    2009 Pezat....$14.99
An impressive project of Jonathan Maltus (proprietor of Chateau Teyssier, Le Dome and other chateaux in St.-Emilion), this blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet France is a sleeper of the vintage. Priced realistically, the wine displays an opaque ruby/purple color and beautiful cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and a hint of underbrush. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, very silky-textured, mouth-filling and enormously satisfying. This sleeper is best drunk over the next several years.

    Jesse James America's Outlaw Beer....$8.99 / 6pk
    Unfiltered Wheat Ale

AMERICA'S OUTLAW BEER is a true American original.  Our beer is an unfiltered wheat beer. American wheat beer is a style invented by specialty brewers in the United States in the 1980's. It may even stretch the definition of "style," for nowhere is the creativity and diversity of America's craft brewers better displayed than in wheat beers.  Our beer is crisp and refreshing with an extremely soft finish.  AMERICA'S OUTLAW BEER is brewed with 40% malted wheat. The remaining grain bill is a wonderful blend of Pale, Caramel, and Munich malts designed to provide more body and mouth feel. Our Nottingham yeast delivers the soft finish that consumers will enjoy time and time again. Wilamette, Fuggles, and Cascade hops balance this
    refreshing beer perfectly.
This beer is delicious by itself or garnished with fruit.
AMERICA'S OUTLAW BEER is 5.5% abv.

    JESSE JAMES DUPREE

"It should come as no surprise that one of the hardest working frontmen in rock and roll (multi-platinum selling Jackyl) is as active behind the scenes as he is onstage. Jesse James Dupree and his multi faceted entertainment company, Mighty Loud Entertainment, has created and Executive Produced the smash TruTV series Full Throttle Saloon, acts as general manager for Kiefer Sutherland's entertainment company, Ironworks, as well as runs an imprint label of his own as a part of the Universal Music system. Now Dupree is moving into the world of spirits after a successful launch of Jesse James America's Outlaw Beer in major midwest markets, whose major challenge thus far has been to keep up with the demand resulting from an unconditionally enthusiastic welcome from the beer-drinking public. "I have personally been responsible for millions of gallons of beer and whiskey that have been consumed over the years. It should have all been Jesse James Beer and Whiskey and from here on out, it will be! I may be the driving force that makes Jesse James Whiskey available, but it belongs to and is a salute to all of us outlaws who bust our knuckles 40 or 50 hours a week, and like to do things loud, proud hard, and honest."

We are proud to be the first store in St. Louis to sell Jones Heritage Farms.  They currently sell their products to many of the best restaurants in St. Louis, and now you can enjoy them in your home.

    Welcome to Jones Heritage Farms
"Located in beautiful Cape Girardeau County, Missouri we are a family-owned farm using old fashioned farming methods to produce the tastiest and healthiest food you can buy. Our old fashioned methods eschew modern industrial agricultural practices such as animal confinement, the feeding of animal byproducts and the use of antibiotics and growth hormones because we are more concerned about healthy, happy animals and great tasting food than maximizing production. All of our animals are raised outdoors and fed an all natural diet of grass and grain. The end result is better tasting food that is better for you and for the environment." - Jones Heritage Farm

Our all natural favorite from the farm—
For centuries the most flavorful pork has come from the Berkshire breed of hogs. Known as “Kurobuta” or “black pig” in Japan where it is considered a delicacy, Berkshire pork is well known in culinary circles for its unsurpassed combination of juiciness, flavor and tenderness. One taste and you’ll see why this breed has retained its popularity for over 300 years. Try our Berkshire Pork today and discover all the natural flavor you have been missing.

    Featured in Feast Magazine --
"What make Jones Heritage Farm's meats special are the animals' genetics and the way the animals are raised. "The meat from heritage-breed hogs has that old fashioned pork flavor that was prevalent before pork became ‘the other white meat,'" Jones says.

"Heritage animals require way more labor and way more time," says Jones. "You can't produce all-natural meat with confinement, so we have to give a lot more time and land to each animal than with conventional farming. When they're in confinement, they end up needing antibiotics. And then they're not all-natural."

The extra attention these animals receive doesn't just produce healthier, more flavorful, antibiotic-free meat. It helps preserve heritage livestock breeds. "The reason heritage breeds [have gone] out of favor, and some have become extinct, is because they don't do well in mass production conditions," Jones says.

"Berkshire is the Kobe beef of pork," says Jones. Berkshires make for the best pork belly and the intramuscular marbling in their loin is ideal. Jones is one of the few Red Wattle breeders in the area - and in the nation. He likes Red Wattle pork for its lean, beefy texture; flavorful dark red to purple meat; and great marbling. According to Jones, the breed is considered critically endangered, with fewer than 2,000 Red Wattles in the world.

"I heard it's Mario Batali's favorite pig," he says. "If Batali likes it, I figured I should try it."

The pigs are given a lot of room to grow: two acres of land per eight pigs. Jones' hogs rotate pastures until they reach 75 to 100 pounds, and then they're put into the woods to forage on fungi, leaves, nuts and other natural goodies. Unlike some other farmers, Jones allows his pigs to root, which is part of their natural instinct. Although it's destructive to the land, he says it's important to the quality of his product to allow his pigs to live naturally.

"It takes a number of things to make a pig that produces high-quality meat," he says. "You've got to keep the pig from being stressed out because stress leads to illness, blood-spots in its meat and no cooperation from the animal. Confinement, heat, lack of food and water, and a lot of new people around who it isn't familiar with will all stress a pig out. So we make sure our pigs have water and a lot of it all the time. And they need shade and a waller, or a mud hole, to keep themselves cool. We'll give a pig antibiotics if it gets sick - I'm not going to let an animal die - but we won't sell it because then [the meat's] not all-natural. But we rarely have a sick pig."

Seventy-five percent of the farm's sales come from pork products. The Berkshires produce two litters a year with about eight to 10 piglets in each litter. The Red Wattles have larger litters, and, according to Sauer, they're better moms. The farm relies on these good moms to keep business booming.

"Pigs used to be called ‘mortgage lifters,'" says Jones, "because small farms could make a lot of money off a single litter, and you usually get two [litters] a year." Profitability isn't their only attractive characteristic, however. As Jones puts it, "Pigs are easy to like."

    Dragon's Breath Lump Charcoal....$16.99 / 20lbs
    From Missouri
    Made from Hickory and Oak
This is one of the top rated and one of the few "Highly Recommended" Lump Charcoals by the Naked Whiz's Lump Charcoal Database

"The charcoal is quite easy light, taking 3 sheets in our chimney starter test. This is low compared to other charcoals. There was very little sparking and no popping while the charcoal burned in the chimney starter. The smoke had the classic smell of American hardwood charcoal.

In our maximum temperature test, the charcoal burned at 980 degrees which ranks very high compared to other charcoals. The fire spreads quickly and there was very little sparking and no popping while the charcoal was burning full tilt. When using a MAPP torch to start the charcoal, we did observer moderate sparking AND popping, so you should exercise care in using a torch to start this charcoal.

Finally, in our burn time test, Dragon Breath burned a very long time ranking Very High compared to other charcoals. In fact, it is one of the longest burning charcoals we've encountered. The ash production was Low compared to other charcoals.

In conclusion, we were very impressed with this charcoal. It is easy to light, has that great American hardwood smell, burns hot, burns long, and produces a low amount of ash.

Some new Sam Adams limited releases....

Sam Adams Cinder Bock Rauch Bock....$6.39 / 22oz

Sam Adams Dark Depths Baltic IPA....$5.49 / 22oz

Sam Adams Tasman Red Red IPA....$4.59 / 22oz

Bold, lively, and a bit rugged This wily red IPA gets its character from the Tasmanian hops that are full of grapefruit, pine, and earthy notes creating a bold flavor that threads throughout the taste. The hops are balanced by a core of roasty malts that give this brew body and richness with hints of toffee. This flavorful brew is rounded and smooth with a dry and citrusy hop finish
For this brew, we wanted to experiment with these flavorful and citrusy Tasmanian hops. We came across Topaz and Galaxy hops, grown in Tasmania and Victoria Australia, that give the beer a bold hop character. This flavorful Red IPA is about more than the hops though. Their bright and citrusy character adds punch and a pleasant bitterness to the rich roasty caramel notes of our specialty malts. The combination of these two streams creates a brew that’s earthy, lively, and smooth

    Sam Adams Whitewater IPA...6pk
We love hops at Samuel Adams, and while we enjoy traditional IPAs, we thought we might spice things up a little bit, literally, by combining the intense hop character of an IPA with the crisp spicy wheat character of a Belgian-style white ale. The resulting fusion-style brew is Samuel Adams Whitewater IPA. The white ale and IPA combination make this crisp, smooth, yet hop-friendly beer the perfect pairing with a variety of meats and cheeses. Intensely flavored and firm in texture, Blue cheeses need a bold beer like Whitewater IPA to cleanse the palate. The brew's strong hop character also adds an earthiness to the savory flavor of meat.

    Sam Adams Noble Pils....6pk
Samuel Adams® Noble Pils is brewed with all 5 Noble hops for a distinct hop character and fresh taste. Deep golden in color with a citrusy hop aroma, Samuel Adams Noble Pils is a traditional Bohemian Pilsner. The honeyed malt character from traditional Bohemian malt is balanced by delicate yet pronounced citrus, floral, and piney notes from the Noble hops. The winner of our 2009 Beer Lover’s Choice® election, this beer was chosen by over 67,000 drinkers for its crisp complexity and refreshing taste.

Dogfish Head / Sierra Nevada Life and Limb #2...$10.99 / 750ml

"What tastes great with Life & Limb?  Life & Limb is a uniquely complex beer, making it a great choice for pairing with food. The rich malts have an interesting sweet/smoky interplay, with earthy spice flavors and notes of dark fruits. This complexity lends itself to pairing with foods ranging from breads and soups all the way through dessert. The strong flavors of Life & Limb can overpower lighter, subtle dishes but work well with darker, spicy flavors such as short ribs, lamb, espresso, molasses, and maple." -- website

Disgorged in 2008 - so 12 years on the lees
    1996 Dom Perignon OEnotheque....$329.99 / 750ml
"The 1996 Dom Perignon OEnotheque offers up layers of pastry, lemon, smoke and toastiness. At first deceptively understated, the wine turns positively explosive and layered on the palate, showing remarkable tension, elegance and power, all wrapped around a seriously intense frame. The balance between fruit and acidity is awesome. This is a marvelous DP OEno. The OEno is the same juice as the regular Dom Perignon, except the OEno is aged on the cork while the regular DP is aged in crown-sealed bottles. Once disgorged, the OEenos gets a slightly lower dosage than is typical for the original release DP. This bottle was disgorged in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026."
