Limited Dark Island Reserve

online also

The Orkney Brewery
Dark Island Reserve....$37.99 / 750ml
Only 329 cases made.
Hand bottled on March 27, 2010
Gyle 5: "This Dark Island Reserve was brewed on 29th Dec 2009 and enjoyed a long, cool fermentation to 10% Alc/vol in vessel no.2 at the Orkney brewery. The small yield was then matured in refill Hogsheads, previously used to mature fine Orkney Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Only 1,975 bottles were produced. These were hand-bottled on the 27th Mar 2010. Classic Dark Island aromas of smooth roast malt, dark chocolate, figs and dates combine with vanilla, spice and bitter orange aromas from the wood and the whisky." -- bottle

"Dark Island Reserve - An Extraordinary Ale.The idea behind the Dark Island Reserve was to create a super-premium, unique and special beer that set new standards in Britain in quality of product and packaging. Since it’s won the packaging industry award for presentation, I think we can say we are achieving our aims.
Using our iconic Dark Island Ale, which is then matured in aged Orkney malt whisky casks for three months, gives this bottled ale a new dimension.
The markets for Dark Island Reserve are quite exclusive and shall remain so as our production is deliberately limited. Retailers, deli’s and off licenses which specialise in their field will stock this exciting new product. The bottle size of 75cl and its’ 10% alcohol by volume means this ale is designed to be savoured.
Each bottle is hand bottled and labeled with the individual Gyle number. Classic Dark Island flavours of smooth roast malt, dark chocolate, caramel, figs and dates combine with vanilla, spice and bitter orange flavours from the wood and whisky.
The front label depicts an etching of the famous Orkney Standing Stones and includes the short description – DARK ISLAND RESERVE The Extraordinary Orcadian Ale. Dark Island Reserve is a rich strong Orcadian ale. After a gentle fermentation at our brewery in Quoyloo, the beer is finished in old oak casks formerly used to mature fine malt whisky. This unhurried process creates a timeless classic full of fruit, spice, oak and roast malt flavours.
Each label is finished, as with the entire Orkney range, with the signature of Andrew Fulton our Head Brewer. If you are looking for an ale to savour or the perfect gift for a real ale fan then this is the very thing." -- website

O'Fallon Sticke it to the Man Sticke Alt....$8.99 / 4pk

"Name the new O'Fallon Beer" Contest Beer is here.

Brian Owens' description the O'Fallon Sticke---

"So here’s the skinny on the Sticke! As you probably know the word “Sticke” is a mangled version of the “low german” word “stickum” which translates to “secret”. The secret lies in the recipe where only a small few knew what actually went into the beer. German brew masters of the day measured their ingredients by the bucketful and if they weren’t paying attention or maybe they had a bit too much beer to drink they sometimes added too much grain. They had to add more hops to balance the maltiness of the extra grains and ended up with a bigger and typically darker version of their Alt. Our version will be an Imperial version of the original. Coming in at 10% ABV this beer will be big and malty with hints of toffee and a subtle roastiness, but will be fully attenuated and relatively dry for being such a big beer. The hops that are used are of the German noble variety giving a healthy bitterness and a noble Pils hop aroma. There is a short list of people who will actually know the recipe and I think the winner of the contest ought to be one of those few."
-- Brian Owens, brewmaster

Grand Teton new releases.

New releases from Grand Teton
Available online

Grand Teton 2010 Coming Home....$9.99 / 25oz
"This Belgian-style Quadrupel ale is full-bodied and robust, boldly showcasing flavors of sweet dried fruits delivered on a smooth, velvety palate. Specialty malts and roasted barley give this beer a sweet malty aroma that complements its complex fruitiness. Brewed in the Belgian tradition with dark candi sugar and a Trappist ale yeast, Coming Home Holiday Ale is rich and flavorful, meant to be shared and savored among friends.

At 10% alcohol by volume, our Quad pours a deep garnet color with a dense, pillowy head. Aromas are sweet and rummy, reminding us of holiday treats. Subtle hop flavor gives enough bitterness to balance the brown sugar and caramel flavors, mingling with figs, raisins, and dates. A robust beer on its own, this deceptively drinkable ale complements gamey meats, fruitcake, or an after-dinner cigar." - Grand Teton

Grand Teton 2010 Pursuit of Hoppiness Imperial Red Ale...$6.99 / 750ml
"Pursuit of Hoppiness Imperial Red Ale is brewed to showcase the brash beauty of American hops: Summit, Simcoe, Chinook and Nuggets at 100 International Bitterness Units (IBU). The hops grown in the United States are considered to be some of the best in the world. Compared to their more traditionally subdued, elegant European counterparts, American hops are bold, bright, piney and zesty. This ale is brewed with Idaho 2-Row malted barley and German specialty malts to provide a rich, slightly caramel flavor and bold reddish color. At 22 degrees Plato starting gravity and about 8.5% alcohol by volume, this thick and warming beer is to be shared and savored.

A wonderful beer with food, Pursuit of Hoppiness' slightly sweet, caramel flavors complement any grilled meat, chicken, or barbecue salmon. It is great with pizza, robust pasta dishes, or roasted root vegetables. The spicy, citrusy hops play nicely with apricots and creamy Camembert cheese, mango sorbet or almond mascarpone." -- Grand Teton

Grand Teton 2010 Black Cauldron
Imperial Stout...$8.99 / 4pk
Rated 95/100 Percentile on RateBeer

"There are few styles of beer more flavorful than Imperial Stout. Our thick, rich version was brewed with plenty of caramel and roasted malts and subtly spiced with American Chinook and Styrian Goldings hops. We've accentuated the natural smokiness of the brew by adding a small amount of beechwood-smoked malt. At 22 degrees starting gravity and 8.0% alcohol by volume, this beer boasts flavors of chocolate and coffee, along with raisins and dried fruit soaked in sherry.
Black Cauldron is a strong ale, best enjoyed in moderation, and paired with full-flavored grilled or roasted meats or with dessert. Chocolate cakes, truffles, fruit tarts, caramel flan or creme brulee are all excellent matches.
We've brewed our Black Cauldron Imperial Stout to recognize and honor the women in the history of brewing. Brewing has been women's work since the dawn of civilization. In all ancient cultures, beer was a gift from a goddess, and women maintained status and power through their skills as brewsters. This remains true today in indigenous cultures from Asia to Latin America, Africa to remote villages in Scandinavia. Around the world, women baked bread and brewed their own beer.
In Europe, the rise of cities brought commercial brewing, as governments realized the potential tax revenue to be had from large breweries. By 1445, the first all-male brewers' guild was established, the campaign against witchcraft burst forth across Europe, and the purge of women from brewing had begun. Beer historian Alan Eames has written that, when an occupation was listed, most of the women burned for witchcraft in Europe were brewsters or alewives.
Most of the imagery we associate with witchcraft today originated with the brewster. The large black cauldron bubbling over with foam? A brew kettle, of course. The black cat? Necessary to keep rats out of the grain store. The tall pointed hat? It allowed the brewster to be seen over the heads of taller men in the marketplace. A broom? The symbol of household domesticity, it is still associated with brewing all over the world.
Without the work of these women through the ages, it's entirely possible beer would not exist today. To learn more about the role of women in today's brewing industry, visit

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout....$8.99 / 4pk

"Foreign Extra Stout is brewed with generous hops and roasted barley for a bittersweet balance & full-flavored, natural bite. Developed over 200 years ago for global export from Ireland, the addition of extra hops ensured this Stout would arrive to its destination in perfect condition. Today, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS®." -- Guinness

"The history of GUINNESS Foreign Extra Stout involves a long brewing tradition of crafting great GUINNESS beer as well as the rich history of Guinness global exports. GUINNESS Foreign Extra Stout dates back to 1801, when it was first brewed at St. James’s Gate brewery in Dublin. Originally known as West India Porter, it was developed to enable GUINNESS to be shipped around the world. In order to accomplish this, it was brewed with extra hops, giving the beer a more intense flavor. The extra hops also acts as a natural preservative for beer, allowing it to survive long journeys overseas. GUINNESS Foreign Extra Stout made its debut in the U.S. in 1817. Export to the U.S. was discontinued during prohibition and the variant is now making its return to the market." --

Founders Harvest

Just got a text from Chris at our Rock Hill location,
He got in his Founders Harvest Ale--- limit 1 - 4 pack per person.

Call Chris at 314-962-8150 to reserve yours.

(I am off work today, so call Chris directly to reserve yours, I will not be able to get my email for a few hours.)

He also got in Founders Breakfast Stout and Red's Rye. Apparently MoBev got shorted all Centennial IPA -- could be weeks before we see more. Breakfast and Red's Rye got cut way down also, so there will probably be another shortage of them soon. I guess Founders is having trouble keeping up with demand.

Provisions and Forsyth should have theirs later. I will post later this afternoon when they arrive.

Wheated Mashbill Kentucky Straight Bourbon....$74.99 / 750ml

"When wheat is used ad the "small grain" in place of rye in the mashbill, the result is wheated Bourbon, a smooth, rich taste, softer and gentler on the palate than traditional Bourbons. Parker Bem, Heavn Hill Distilleries' sixth generation Master Distiller, has selected a limited number of barrels of Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon as the fourth edition of Parker's Heritage Collection. Cask strenght and non-chill filtered to preserve all the natural flavor produced by esters formed in the aging process, this rare whiskey is a feast for nose and palate. It is further testament to Parker's genius, and it belongs in your collection of fine whiskeys." -- back label
