St. Louis Craft Beer Week - Beer Vs. Wine Food Pairing

The Results of last night......

Beer vs. Wine Episode III
The Side Project Chronicles

Sadly I have come to the realization that as the wine guy in the Wine vs. Beer tastings I have the same chance of winning as the Washington Generals do against the Harlem Globetrotters. Last night was no exception, but it was a lot closer than you might expect given that Karen King of Side Project Cellars was pouring against me and the final two beers were Side Project Anabasis and Dervation 1. Beer won 3 of the 5 rounds and overall 44 votes to 41 for wine, again a lot closer than I expected. The end result of the evening I hope was that everyone had a great time and enjoyed some great beer and great wine while enjoying the food as well. As a personal editorial to the evening, it has become obvious to me that with the likes of Cory and Karen King raising the bar of what beer can be, the line between beer and wine drinker is becoming very faint. Thanks to all who joined us last night let's do it again soon.- Aaron Zwicker

Classic Beer of the Week! Delirium Tremens

Classic Beer of the Week!
We are featuring a "Classic" beer in our Friday night tasting when we can. So many people may have never had these beers because they are not the "new" or "hot" craft beer anymore.
Taste it this tonight at our Forsyth location along Charleville Barrel Aged Box of Chocolate and other beers

Delirium Tremens
Rated 95/100 RateBeer
Alcohol volume: 8.5% ABV
Colour and sight: pale blond, the fine and regular effervesce ensures a fine and stable head.
Scent: Slightly malty, a nice touch of alcohol, spicy.
Flavour: Feels like the sound shot of alcohol is igniting the mouth. In reality the tongue and palate are warmed. The taste is characterized by its roundness. The aftertaste is strong, long-lasting and dry bitter.

Cave Aged Gruyere
Matured for 8 months. Gruyere has an unmistakably assertive, musty flavor. Recognizable by its dark brown to black rind. This cheese has a sharpness not found in other Gruyeres. Gruyere is a classic cheese from Switzerland.  Great for melting.  This one is cave aged to give it more sharpness and flavor.

Rock Hill Location Cheese Feature: Nuvola di Pecora

Rock Hill Location Cheese Feature: Nuvola di Pecora

Nuvola di Pecora
Here comes a semi-soft sheep’s milk cheese from Northern Italy that’s rustic in style with a creamy and meaty flavor. Somewhat hard to find, Nuvola di Pecora or “Sheep’s Cloud” comes from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy between the Appenine Mountains and the River Po. Aged for about thirty days so it can develop its thin, bloomy rind, Nuvola di Pecora cheese has a firm but pliable texture. Taste wise; it is somewhat mild with just a touch of sheep flavor.

$18.99 for the 8 pack!

Urban Chestnut Baren Weisse Wheat Ale with Strawberies
Swirl it, waft it, now close your eyes and think strawberry. Ahhh? there it is? and yes, it is subtle, but the "beeren" in this weissbier provides a soft aroma, light sweetness on the tongue, adn the combination of strawberry with the wheat beer makes for a wonderfully refreshing summer ale. BTW Bears love it! ABV-5.0%, IBUs-15, OG - 11.0 Plato (Belgian goblet)

Urban Chestnut Perdedor Lager brewed with Lemon Peel and Lime Peel
Lemon-Lime Lager - "In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey..." Wha, wha, wha, what?!!! Well it’s like this. If you’re familiar with the Singer/Songwriter ’Beck’, you might recall his breakthrough single ’Loser’ aka ’Perdedor’. A finger-in-your-face song essentially stating, "I might be a loser cuz I’m less than a man, so what are you going to do about it...kill me?! Well that’s kinda like our Lemon-Lime Lager - "I might be a perdedor cuz I’m less than a traditional beer, so what are you going to do about it...spill me?!" "Got a couple of couches sleep on the love seat..." OG 11.2 Plato (Pilsner)

Urban Chestnut Bap Kolsch Ale
The classic style from Cologne, named after the most famous rock band to write their lyrics in Kölsch. This warm filtered ale is cold conditioned so it takes on the characteristics of a lager.

Trois Dames / Jester King / Crooked Stave Sin Frontera

This one will go via BRC - email sent today!
We have the Trois Dames Version of this Collaboration

We have the Trois Dames version.  Here is info from Jester King's site about the collaboration though.

Trois Dames / Jester King / Crooked Stave Sin Frontera

We’re excited to introduce Cerveza Sin Frontera, a three part collaboration between Jester King,Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project in Denver, Colorado and Brasserie Trois Dames in Sainte Croix, Switzerland. The concept behind Cerveza Sin Frontera was to brew an identical recipe, referment it in the same type of barrels (Spanish sherry) at three different locations on earth, and allow the microorganisms unique to each brewery to impart interesting and differentiating characteristics to the beer. In other words, Cerveza Sin Frontera seeks to explore the impact that mixed culture fermentation has upon an identical recipe for wort (unfermented beer). It highlights how fermentation that exists outside the world of pure culture brewers yeast has the ability to create unique beer with a sense of place.

All three breweries involved in the collaboration ferment their beer with unique blends of yeast and bacteria. In the case of Jester King, all of our beer is fermented with a mixed culture of microorganisms consisting of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the air and wildflowers around our brewery in the Texas Hill Country. We brewed our version of Cerveza Sin Frontera at our brewery in October 2013 with the help of Chad Yakobson of Crooked Stave and Raphaël Mettler of Trois Dames. The wort, brewed with Hill Country well water, barley, wheat, oats, and hops, was initially fermented in stainless steel for three months, then refermented in Spanish sherry barrels for twelve months, and finally refermented in bottles, kegs, and casks for three more months. During the long fermentation, the multitude of microorganisms slowly transformed the beer into something unique to our brewery in the Texas Hill Country. We traveled to Colorado in April 2014 to help brew the version fermented with Crooked Stave’s mixed culture, as well as to Switzerland in May 2014 to help brew the version fermented with Trois Dames’ mixed culture.

The Texas version of Cerveza Sin Frontera fermented at Jester King is 6.4% alcohol by volume, has a finishing gravity of 1.002 (0.5 degrees Plato), and was 7 IBU and 3.0 pH at the time of bottling. It will go on sale at our tasting room at 4pm CST on Friday, April 17th. It will be available by the glass, as well as to go in 750ml bottles ($20, limit 3 per customer per day). Approximately 5,000 bottles are available. We’ll also be participating in a special “sneak peak” of Cerveza Sin Frontera during the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland, Oregon. We’ll be at The Hop & Vine at 6pm Pacific time on April 17th for the sneak peak (more details on the poster below)! We’re excited that the Colorado version fermented at Crooked Stave will also be available at The Hop & Vine. The Switzerland version fermented at Trois Dames will be released in Europe in May. Details to follow. Finally, we have plans to blend all three versions and serve them at Shelton Bros. Importers The Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida in October 2015.

Below are photos from the creation of Cerveza Sin Frontera. We hope you enjoy this special project designed to highlight the incredible ability of diverse microorganisms to create unique flavors and aromas through the beauty of fermentation!

FW CANS are back!

CANS are back!!

Firestone Walker Easy Jack Session IPA....$9.99 / 6 pack CANS
Brewmaster Matt Brynildson went to the mountain and returned with a vision for a different kind of Session IPA, one that would be brewed and dry hopped with a globetrotting selection of new hop varieties from Europe, New Zealand and North America. He foresaw a beer that would deliver massive hop aromas, a signature malt balance and an empty glass before you knew what hit you. And so the newest member of our Jack IPA family was born.

Firestone Walker Pivo Hoppy Pils....$9.99 / 6pk CANS
Everything we love about classic German Pilsner with a hoppy Bohemian twist. Pils is a bright straw colored lager beer with playful carbonation topped with beautiful white foam lace. Delicate lightly toasted malt flavors underscore noble German hop character. Hallertau-grown Magnum hops deliver the lupulin foundation while generous amounts of Spalter Select hops bring floral aromatic and spicy herbal notes. As a twist on the traditional Pils, we dry hop with German Saphir for a touch of bergamot zest and lemongrass. A refreshing, light-bodied and hop-driven Pils.

Firestone Walker Double Jack IPA....$10.99 /6 pack CANS

An aggressively hopped West Coast-style IPA. Union Jack showcases exceptional dry hop character with stunning pineapple, citrus and piney aromas on the nose accompanied by honey-like malt aromatics. Double dry hopping brings bold grapefruit, tangerine and citrus flavors that are contrasted by pale malt sweetness to balance this intense brew. A true tribute to the style that put the West Coast on the craft beer map.

Taste some very limited Avery Sours plus we would like to help
introduce Union Loafers opening soon here in St. Louis
Follow Union Loafers on Twitter for news on their grand opening

Featuring Union Loafers Bread and Pretzels
Union Loafers will be supplying some Pretzels and Bread for the tasting
Pretzels made with some Bolyard's lard to add an extra richness to counter the sours.
Plus he plans on doing a couple of big loaves too with some red fife wheat that has mild nutty depth of flavor relatable to graham crackers, not too sour, and some fresh butter on the side for extra measure. Think that bread would offer enough to complement and balance a sour.

WOW-- Wine of the Week! Chateau Virgile Rose

Taste the wine of the Week on August 1st from 11am-4pm

This wine will be on sale that day.  Check store for details!

2014 Château Virgile Costières de Nîmes Rosé...$11.99
Grenache 90%, Syrah 10%
The grapes are hand-harvested at night to preserve their freshness, and then 100% de-stemmed before undergoing a short 12-hour maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Beginning in 2009 Serge and Thierry have progressively increased the percentage of Grenache from 60% to 80%, and now to 90%. The result is dramatic. Though they have always made elegant, balanced rosés, the wines have become increasingly perfumed and silky.
Delicate aromas of wild strawberry and red cherry dominate the nose of this beautiful rosé. The wine is bright pink with a tinge of fuchsia in the glass. The strawberry and cherry notes carry through to the mouth, where they are complemented with hints of red raspberry and refreshing minerality. Château Virgile produces a very versatile rosé, crisp enough to drink on its own, but flavorful enough for a meal.

Pretty Things American Darling

Very Limited!

Pretty Things American Darling...$6.49 / 22oz
Beer Type: German-style Lager (the unlawnmower beer)
Hop Variety: 100% Hallertau-region hops
ABV: 5.5%
IBUs: 45

Note: Our 2015 American Darling is decoction brewed, unfiltered German style lager.
If you’re looking for a reason to try Pretty Things this summer, we hope a well-stated 5.5% pale lager might be a good bet. This beer bears our usual stamp of authenticity-at-the-expense-of-convenience, so here is a decoction lager brewed with German malt and hops, and fermented at cool temperatures with German lager yeast for over 6 weeks.

This time we were looking to make the un-lawnmower beer (with an emphasis on the “UN”). Just how do we go about doing that? Well, we start with some of the world’s greatest pilsner malt from Weyermann in Bamberg, Germany. There’s no rice and corn in our darling either – just the best barley malted for this purpose in the world. What else? We use a decoction brewing method: this comes from old German brewhouses, where temperature control was not possible, so a portion of the mash is removed, brought to boiling temperature and then re-mixed with the rest of the mash. This is a whole lot of work, but we think it’s worth it because it gives a whole lot of authentic Germanic flavour! All of the hops used in American Darling come from the Hallertau hop region of Germany. Finally, fermentation uses a blend of two of Europe’s great lager yeasts, with low temperature fermentation and lagering, over six weeks.

Put it in your coolers, your picnic baskets… your saddlebags. Take it to family reunions and pie-eating contests, parades, beaches, fancy mustache conventions, hot dog factory tours, monorail excursions, secret basement lairs… wherever good summertime fun happens!

Then fire up the grill, not just once – how about every day?! Get out the horse shoes, kick up your feet and forget that oily red jalopy out back even has a purpose. Stop mowing, start having fun times! Cheers to summer!

***

The label was inspired by true Americana and our unhealthy love of the unmowed lawn. We at Pretty Things live in the city and haven’t touched one of these contraptions for decades (our thanks to cousin Rob for letting us base this label on his). We imagine a future where unruly, overgrown lawns replace these half acre, wall-to-wall summer-wasters. That is why we drew an overgrown, antique lawn mower. Let’s let it get shaggy America! Enjoy American Darling and see you next summer.

Mikkeller Draft Bear Imperial Pilsner is back!

Another blast from the past, we have not seen this beer since 2012!

Mikkeller Draft Bear Imperial Pilsner...$11.99
’Fad bamse’ is a highly hopped and dry hopped imperial pilsner with a light body and a lovely crispness from the lager yeast. A Danish pilsner is typically characterized by an alcohol content of 4,6% vol., piss-yellow color and a sexless, slightly bitter taste. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Draft Bear is Mikkeller’s interpretation of a ’pilsner’, heavyweight-style. With its powerful hop notes, high alcohol content and lovely golden appearance, the only reference to the pilsner style is the clean taste of the lager yeast.

– Imperial Pilsner
– Brewed at D’Proef in Belgium

Mikkeller Hues Lambic

Mikkeller Hues 2014 Lambic...$12.99 / 375ml

98/100 RateBeer
This spontaneous fermented beer has been aged in Hungarian oak barrels and appears with a light amber color with almost no head.

The aroma is huge and very vinous. A clear impression of oxidized apples is the first thing that hits you, which made us think of heavy old fashioned British apple ciders. The aroma also reveals the wooden notes from the barrels along with some burned toffee and spices like Star anise.

It has a very heavy acidic profile at first, one that quickly slides into a smooth kind of sweetness. We taste green apples, carambola and very young green grapes. It has a certain lactic acidic touch and a creamy dry finish that lasts forever and bares the green impressions through.

Some mild creamy blue cheese on roasted rye bread would work great due to both the lactic and acidity impressions in this beer.

Mahr's Mastodon Lager

We first had this beer back in February 2012.

So, it has been a few years!

Mastodon "The Hunter"

Mahr's Mastodon Unfiltered Lager...$3.99 / pint
Mahrs Bräu’s Stephan Michel is a rabid music fan, and occasional brewer to the stars. Having befriended American metalheads Mastodon, he found it easy to convince the band that they needed a serious beer to put their name on. Mastodon is just the thing–a chuggable but deliciously complex unfiltered classic Franconian keller/lager. You can slam to this one all night in the mosh pit without being called a wuss! Don’t forget the lederhosen.

Mastodon "The Hunter" is their 5th Album released in Sept 2011.
More info on their facebook page

Mastodon
Mastodon have never really done anything the “conventional” way. The Atlanta-based band formulated their own brand of highly-skilled hard rock over a decade ago when others were rehashing 80s metal, and went on to mastermind a string of complex concept albums while much of the music world was centered on making digestible singles. The fact that Mastodon has received an outpouring of critical kudos along with public praise from respected icons from Metallica to The Melvins, The Flaming Lips and CeeLo Green and back, they’ve been humbled by the magnitude of appreciation. But rather than taking time to revel, they prefer to focus their attention on pushing musical boundaries even deeper by exploring their own creative process to the fullest. The Hunter is yet another universe bending, high energy masterpiece from the band that helped shape hard rock for the 21st century with their previous albums:...." read more from their website

Anchorage Mosaic Saison and Anadromous Black Sour Ale

In stock now

Anchorage Mosaic Saison...$12.99 / 750ml
Rated 99/100 RateBeer"Sameness is easy, predictable, accepted. Different, however, poses a challenge, gives way to debate, stimulates thought. The ancient art form of Mosaic is founded on the idea of creating splendor utilizing contrasting elements: jagged edges situated (un)comfortably next to rounded perfection, darkness clarifying the light, hammered down broken glass. It is these contradictory, different processes that create beauty.

So I invite you to open your mind to contrast, engage in the experience, be perplexed, question the intricacies, and revel in this liquid Mosaic that is staking its claim to be different.

Consider the unapologetic bitterness of Old Man Hop as he extends his gnarled fingers, taking a frictional grasp of your tongue. Flirtatiously nudging him aside, in bounces the charming singsong of his Hoppy Mistress greeting her guests with a fresh-cut platter of aromatic tropical fruity sweetness. Don't mind if I do.

Bring your awareness to the approach of the rustic, shady Saison Yeast Character, whose strands hang low over his downcast eyes, as he shyly mumbles "'Sup Dude."

Contemplate the tapping of your feet, and allow a serious boogie down session with the jazzed up Effervescent Chap as he's high flying, and break dancing on your taste buds.

Observe as the militant invasion of the feared Brettanomyces troupe files in, offering proud salute to the sensory shape shifting that will slowly escort you to the artful transcendence of its Mosaic mission. Go ahead, drink in the scenic route through this fluid medley of colorful characters. Delight in different.

Anchorage Anadromous Black Sour Ale...$14.99

Rated 97/100 RateBeer
Brewed with Summit Hops. Aged in French Oak Pinot Noir barrels with Kodiak Salmon Berries and brettanomyces. Triple Fermented.

"The cycle of life can be harsh or rewarding.  Born in fresh water, the might anadromous Alaska Salmon struggle in their migration from our pristine, roaring streams to the coean and back, traveling thousands of miles while avoiding  many perils, simply to instinctively spawn and die, and often become a source of food in our own life cycle.
Sour beers have a distinct life cycle as well in their journey from the oak to the bottle, and ultimately add a rewarding contribution to our own path through life.  Rather than slumber in the oak where Anchorage Brewing Company's Anadromous is born, the beer matures for a year and a half while instinctively avoiding the sometimes offsetting perils of fermentation and souring in the deep, dark underworld of the oak.
Unseen to mortals, the beer fights its way to maturity, avoiding attacking bacteria, the alcohol itself and other hidden dangers that might curtail the beer's noble journey to our goblets.
Anadromous is Anchorage Brewing Company's tribute to our rewards and struggles in life.  Over 40 different Pinot Noir oak barrels of sour beer were blended to capture the unique contribution of each.  Bottle conditioning and time add additional complexity and sourness to the noble brew along its path from the brewery to your glass.

Pull the cork on this mighty species and add a unique experience to your cycle of life.  Anadromous is alive and enriching, so enjoy it while celebrating all things good.

SURLY BREWING Collab with Amager

Amager Collab with Surly Todd the Axe Man...$8.99 / pint

Rated 99/100 RateBeer
For quite some time the Amager crew has been discussing this question: which person is the most rock’n’roll in the whole craft beer world - is it Barnaby Struve of Three Floyds or is it Todd Haug of Surly Brewing? In the end it wasn’t really all that difficult to decide since only Todd has played for Laura Dern in a David Lynch movie (yeah, Nicolas Cage was in that same movie, but since when did he count?) AND Todd plays the guitar in both a speed metal band and a stoner band. Add to that that Todd and his wife Linda are some of the nicest people to hang out with. So Todd, here’s to you: "Todd - The Axe Man" - a potent IPA loaded with fresh American aroma hops on a base of rich Golden Promise malt, Surly’s signature malt. Raise a glass to Todd, world class brewer - and master of the axe! Bonus facts about Todd: yes, he DID actually have a perm in his younger days (his wife confirms) and he does indeed love cats an awful lot.
