At Smooth Ambler, after we began merchant bottling the whiskey we call Old Scout, it occurred to us that at some point it may be fun and interesting to blend a little of the delicious bourbon we source with the smooth and sweet wheated bourbon we distill here in West Virginia. With that notion in mind, Contradiction was born; a blend of whiskey we make with whiskey we do not. Contradiction is non-chill filtered and is full-bodied, with notes of dried fruit and butter rum, and has the end-result of tasting like a four-grain bourbon.
Mashbill: Merchant bottled bourbon made with corn, rye and malted barley married with homemade bourbon made with corn, wheat and malted barley.
Distillation Process: Continuous column distillation and pot distillation.
Aging: A blend of different straight whiskeys, there are different ages represented in Contradiction. The majority whiskey is more than 9 years in age.

The 2017 Mâcon-Villages from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a very pretty and quite classic example of its appellation. The bouquet is quite floral, wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, fresh almond, a developing note of beeswax, spring flowers, toasty Mâconnais soil tones and a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and impressively vibrant, with a very good core of fruit, lovely soil signature, zesty acids and lovely backend energy on the long and complex finish. This is a very lovely example of Mâcon-Villages, with impressive backend amplitude. A great value! 2019-2026.

Matsui Shuzou was founded in 1910 and is located in the Tottori Prefecture northwest of Kyoto on the shore of the Sea of Japan. Fresh ground water from the Tottori prefecture wilderness is a blessing from the earth and is used to bring the Kurayoshi Whisky to proof. It is a very tasty, mellow characteristic of whisky deserving of the name Kurayoshi, the city of water and green. Tottori is known for its soft mineral water and abundance of nature. Over 14% of the total land area of the prefecture is designated as Natural Park.

The malt aromas and sweet refreshing fruit notes remind one of pale golden and dry orange colors. The palate is sweet and stands out with fragrances of vanilla and nuts. The mouth-feel is very soft.

Dense jungle and rainforest are the preferred habitat of jaguars, however as these areas are destroyed through deforestation these noble creatures are forced to roam farther and farther afield in search of the Tiki drinks and grilled cheese sandwiches that sustain them. A couple years ago, we ran into one at Sportsmans Club and shut down the patio with him. Bottled in early 2018, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Proprietary Red Wine is a little closed, slowly unfurling to reveal black cherries, crème de cassis and plum pudding with nuances of potpourri, baking spices and tilled soil plus wafts of garrigue and wild sage. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated with exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic poise and depth with a long, decadently fruited finish.

2012 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Red....$1199.98 per bottle

The 2012 Harlan Estate is reminiscent of their 2002. Probably a candidate for perfection with another 4-5 years of bottle age, the wine is inky plum/purple to the rim and offers a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, blackberry and cassis, forest floor, and a floral, lavender-like component followed by deep, opulent, majestic flavors that caress the palate with high but sweet tannin. This is relatively evolved, and supple and voluptuous for a young Harlan estate – hence the comparison with their compelling 2002. This wine can be drunk in several years and is likely another candidate for 30-50 years of cellaring.
