Tenjaku Blended Japanese Whisky

Tenjaku Blended Japanese Whisky....$38.99
天雀 – the Japanese characters for the skylark (hibari), the much-loved herald of spring in the East and West, and for this masterfully blended whisky.  Like the clear, exquisite song of a small bird, it features an agreeably pure, mellow flavor.  Carefully selected unprocessed whiskies and pure, natural spring water are expertly blended to create this distinctive whisky.

Westland Garryana Native Oak Series Whiskey Edition 4/1....$139.99
The Expanding Possibilities of the West
Each year that passes we are compelled to step away from the accomplishments of the past to strike out into the wild again, explore new ideas, and move further into the unknown where there are no signs to point the way. As we do, we deliberately leave behind markers so the lessons learned aren’t lost in the fervor of new ideas. Keeping a record has become a gratifying discipline at Westland, enabling us to press on while still gaining perspective from where we’ve been.

A clearer picture of Garry oak is beginning to take shape. We’ve begun to answer a number of questions already with our early releases. Will Garry oak play well with virgin American oak casks of the new world and the smoky peated malt of the old? Can it take on a supporting, complementary role in a more delicate, nuanced whiskey without overpowering it? How does its influence change when used as a finishing cask?

This year’s release of Garryana continues the inquiry and plants yet another marker in uncharted territory that still seems to have no horizon. With Garryana 4|1 we followed a path we’ve been curious to explore since the beginning: Sherry casks.

Again we examine what happens when the traditions of the old world collide with the creativity of the new. What happens when two of the deepest wells of flavor are combined in one bottle? Will one deny a voice to the other? Or will they find harmony in a new and unexpected way?

With this release, we place another entry in the record.

We are tasting and releasing our new Roasting House Dark Coffee!
Many of you remember our old sister shop, The Roasting House. That store was one of the original small-batch coffee roasters in #STL. We’re bringing this tradition back with our “Roasting House Dark” coffee collaboration with Living Room Coffee (livingroomstl.com)!

About the coffee: Roasting House Dark is roasted in Maplewood exclusively for us by Living Room Coffee. The beans are organic and fair trade from Peru. Grown by small farmers at elevations of approx. 5,900 feet. The master roasters at Living Room then roast the beans dark to our specifications. The resulting coffee tastes of sweet chocolate with a bit of acidity, caramel, lemon, toffee with a slightly herbal aftertaste and smooth mouthfeel. We are so proud to offer this to you!

Available at all four stores on Small Business Saturday Nov 30 (with a tasting at our Forsyth store from 9 to 12). We hope you try it and tell us what you think. Thanks for supporting us, shopping small and buying local!

WhistlePig 18 Year Old Rye

WhistlePig 18 Year Old Rye...$369.99
Dave Pickerell built WhistlePig in pursuit of crafting the world’s finest and most interesting Rye Whiskeys. After years of devotion to patient aging and innovative blending, we’ve turned our attention to experiments with grain – in particular, the bygone practice of malting rye. Before industrial catalysts were introduced to increase efficiency, farmer distillers would malt a small portion of their rye harvest in order to access the grain’s starch content and set off the fermentation process. Floral, earthy flavors imparted by malted rye would add nuance to the bold, peppery spice character of classic rye whiskey.

To harness these flavors for our oldest expression of WhistlePig yet, we selected a whiskey distilled from 79% rye, 15% malted rye, and 6% malted barley. These grains form a harmony that spans the flavor spectrum, at once soft and floral, rich and savory, and full of spice. Its complexity is only heightened after 18 years in the barrel.
