He sources fruit from the Grand Cru vineyards of the Central Coast; these small production wines truly are magic in a bottle. They are always super-limited, do not sleep on them!

Wild strawberries, rose petals, forest floor, and orange blossom are just some of the nuances in the 2021 Pinot Noir Victor Francis Peake Ranch Vineyard, a beautifully pure, medium to full-bodied, spicy, floral Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. It has the same level of purity and elegance found in the other efforts here and is a joy to drink. Do Ferreiro produces its orujo from a more than 250-year-old vineyard, the source of their world-famous Cepas Vellas albariño. Do Ferreiro Orujo de Galicia retains all of the subtle aromatics of white flowers and herbs that we associate with their exceptional albariño. The low yields of these incredibly old grapevines naturally limit the annual production. Do Ferreiro double distills their pomace in an alquitara, a primitive still most often used in Spanish brandy production.

Tasting Notes: This Orujo de Galicia is something of a wild child, full of flavor and nearly impossible to pin down. The vinous quality is clear, but presents in a way that feels distinctly Galician: mineral, verdant, and laced with iodine. Blooms of white flowers and orange peel in the finish are reminiscent of the Cepas Vellas albariño itself.

Pairing Notes: Orujo is traditionally served chilled as a digestif, but is also common in a carajillo, a hot coffee cocktail with orujo, espresso, and a hint of sugar (we like it with Ethiopian beans or other vegetal styles). In cocktails, Orujo pairs well with gin, dry vermouth, fino sherry, and Jacoulot Crème de Pêche.

Do Ferreiro’s Licor de Hierbas de Galicia is an herbal liqueur macerated with a selection of herbs that impart its distinctive color and flavor. The base distillate, Orujo de Galicia, is produced from a more than 250 years old vineyard, the source of their world-famous Cepas Vellas albariño. The low yields of these incredibly old grapevines naturally limit the annual production. Do Ferreiro double distills their pomace in an alquitara, a primitive still most often used in Spanish brandy production, diverting some of this distillate to make the regional favorite Licor de Hierbas. Pairing Notes: Traditionally served chilled as a digestif after a large meal, Licor de Hierbas can also be a more subtle option for Chartreuse-based classic cocktails. This carefully crafted liqueur mixes well with gin, vermouth, amontillado sherry, lighter whiskeys like bourbon or Irish, Alma de Trabanco Quinquina, and Jacoulot Crème de Pêche and Mûre.

2016 La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva

2016 La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva...$42.99
Savory and complex with dried orange peel, cedar and plenty of sweet spices, walnuts, caramel, dried mushrooms and pine needles. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it.

The 2016 Viña Ardanza Reserva was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha that matured in used American oak barrels for three years, where it was hand-racked from barrel to barrel six times in the case of Tempranillo and five times for the Garnacha, as it had a slightly shorter élevage of 30 months. Against all odds, I found the 2016 to be fresher than the 2015 and less developed, despite the fact that winemaker Julio Sáenz told me he considers it a warmer year. But I have found many wines I like in 2016, and the wine feels very clean and quite harmonious, younger and less developed, with more primary notes and a velvety mouthfeel. 600,000 bottles produced. The wine was bottled in June 2020.

Their young and fresh red 2018 Viña Alberdi, already a Reserva (Crianza in Spain), matured in oak barrel for two years—in new barrels for the first year and in used barrels for the second year. During the élevage, they racked the wine manually from barrel to barrel four times. 2018 was a year of lower alcohol and more freshness in the wines, and they thought the wines were not designed for the long haul; so, they didn't produce any other wine, and so the only wine from 2018 IS VIÑA ALBERDI! Which means that all the Tempranillo grapes that were destined for 890, 904 and all the other wines went to this wine. They didn't use the Garnacha (which was sold in bulk). So, this is a super- Viña Alberdi, which shows more Crianza style in this cooler vintage but with very good depth and complexity, perhaps a more modern and fresher style. The wine has a seamless palate and a juicy texture, with more color than other vintages, more intensity, more fruit... It has grapes from very good vineyards and poor soils that were never destined for this wine. Highly recommendable and very versatile. It has potential to age. They produced a whopping one million bottles of it. It was bottled in March 2021.
