"The redoubtable Beeswax Vineyard in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County has the very singular and coincidental habit of producing white grapes expressing the unique scent of...well, beeswax. Along with beeswax, one apprehends the rather discreet scent of white flowers and perhaps pineapple. But while the scent of Picpoul is subtle, one is forcefully struck by the wine's bracing acidity and its unique savoriness (who's you-mami?). "In cool years the Grenache is enormously pretty and fragrant. This was the first year of production for the Cinsault and it was thinned multiple times both for enhanced concentration and evenness of ripening. The cooler climate gives the Cinsault a wonderful articulation of flavor, but what is most noteworthy is the fact that we were able to coferment the Cinsault with Syrah. Something magical happens when Syrah and Cinsault marry; the healthy tanin titer from the Syrah seems to give more structure to the Cinsault, helps to stabilize color. This special project from the Adega Ponte de Lima highlights the diverse soils of the Vinho Verde region. Made from 100% Loureiro grapes, both the Granite and Schist varieties boast a crisp acidity and expressive minerality.
The vineyards are 12.40 miles apart. Elevation is 70-190 meters above Sea Level (both locations), Slope at both locations 25-30 %.
Granite Soil comes from the North Bank of the Lima Vineyard (Northern Portugal).
Lima Vinho Verde Granite displays intense floral aromas with great freshness and more accentuated minerality.

SECRET TECHNIQUE

The flagship 2017 Estate Cuvée (49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 21% Petit Verdot) spent 15 months in 90% new French oak, and I certainly blew the barrel review on this wine. It offers a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed violets, lead pencil, chocolate, and a rocking sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and seamless on the palate, it's about as polished and sexy as they come in the vintage.

A blend of 49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Estate Cuvée has a very deep purple-black color and explosive nose of black cherry and boysenberry preserves, crème de cassis, cedar, violet, burnt orange peel, baker’s chocolate, thyme, grilled meats, loamy earth and Indian spices. The silky, full-bodied palate is expansive, spicy and floral laced, with a firm but incredibly pixelated frame and great freshness on the long, dense finish. This merits another 3-5 years in bottle at least.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis comes from more sandy soils and is all Grenache raised in demi-muids. Wild strawberries, cherries, flowery incense, lavender, and loamy earth all make an appearance, and it's full-bodied, has a deep layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's another wine that needs a few years of bottle age, but it will deliver the goods over the following 15+. This is Grenache at its most elegant and seamless.

2018 Isabel Ferrando F601 Chateauneuf du Pape....$799.99
Named for the vineyard parcel from which it comes, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape F601 is entirely Cinsault, from vines planted in 1928. Aged in demi-muids, there are only 800 bottles of this new cuvée, so I suppose this review is largely academic. That said, when Cinsault performs like this, it's certainly worthy of note, as it's often used for rosé or (in Châteauneuf, an appellation where rosé isn't permitted) dismissed as a minor blending variety. This wine is anything but minor. Floral and spicy on the nose, supremely silky on the palate, nearly endless on the finish, it delivers the goods, cushioned by perfumed, herbal, cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. It's not quite as expansive or generous as the Grenache-based Colombis, but it might be more concentrated and longer on the finish. I've been deliberately conservative with my drinking window, as it's delicious now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it showing well in a decade's time (assuming there's any left).
