Frequently Asked Questions What makes Wheelhouse Fish Co. unique? Shalie was raised working on her family's commercial fishing boats, the F/V Whidby and the F/V Rebel Isle, harvesting wild salmon, halibut, and shrimp on the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska.
Wheelhouse Fish Co. is inspired by her upbringing and the unique lifestyle of Alaskan fishermen and families.
Why is this fish better than what I can find at my typical fish market? Wild seafood is harvested in a manner that promotes the long-term health and stability of ocean ecosystems. Responsible fishing practices focus on maintaining fish populations, minimizing bycatch, and preserving marine habitats, helping to safeguard the delicate balance of marine life.
Many coastal communities throughout Alaska have relied on wild seafood as a significant part of their cultural and traditional heritage for generations. By choosing wild seafood, you support these communities and their way of life.
Isn't fresh fish better than frozen? At the end of the day, “fresh” fish at the grocery store may not always be as fresh as you think. The reality is, unless you live on the coast or near a fishing port, you’re likely not eating truly fresh fish (meaning fish that has never been frozen). Wheelhouse Fish Co. products are flash frozen, which preserves its flavor and texture. All of this is locked in until the moment you’re ready to thaw and prepare it!
How should I defrost my catch? Thaw frozen seafood in the fridge overnight or in a plastic bag under cool running water – never in warm water or at room temperature. |
