Aime Cabernet Franc

It is hard to find a good Cabernet Franc that
is not $40 or more, but we have done it....

2011 Domaine Aime Cabernet Franc....$14.99

Technical Notes:  100% Cabernet Franc.  After the grapes are harvested they are 100% destemmed, crushed, then fermented and aged in tank before bottling.  The grapes are sustainably farmed, and vinified using indigenous yeasts. There is no oak aging for this wine.
Tasting Notes:   This is a rich ripe Cabernet Franc, with none of the vegetal elements that one sometimes finds in cooler climate Cabernet Franc.  The wine is deep dark purple color.  In the mouth the wine is full of black fruit flavors, with hints of blueberry and plum.  The finish is soft and supple with ripe tannins.  This is an exceptionally easy wine to enjoy.  It is silky enough to have on its own, but rich and complex enough to enjoy with a wide variety of dishes.

Mas des Brunes “Cuvée des Cigales”

In stock at all four locations

On Sale!
2009 Mas de Brunes “Cuvée des Cigales” – Vin de Pays Côtes de Thongue...$13.99
Blend: 100% Old Vine Syrah (tiny yield of 25 hl/ha)

Tasting Notes: The 2009 “Cuvée des Cigales” is completely dominated by black fruit. The nose is full of deep blackberry and plum aromas. In the mouth black cherry and blackberry flavors mix with the exotic and complex spice flavors from the Carignan. This is a burly, muscular wine with a lot of character. While an ideal match for grilled meats and game, we also enjoy this wine with the more complex, spicier flavors of barbecue and chili.
"Claude and Isabelle Bertrand have utilized some of her brother Bruno Granier's ancient Carignan to supplement the 60% Syrah and 30% Grenache in their 2007 Cuvee des Cigales from the Cotes de Thongue. But even a "secret ingredient" that concentrated (as witness my reviews in this report of pure Carignan from Granier's La Font de l'Olivier) can at 10% level only go so far in explaining the striking personality of the Bertrand's wine, which gives me a "who turned out the lights?" feeling, followed by an enchanting romp in some very dark territory. Humus, peat, plum paste, dark chocolate, and game share billing with implosively intense, lightly-cooked blackberry and mulberry. The only drawback here is a hint of heat and rasp of tannin accentuating a bite of black pepper in the persistent finish. But this should prove fascinating and versatile over the next several years." - The Wine Advocate

Great Russian River Chardonnay....

2009 Walter Hansel Chardonnay Russian River Valley...$25.99

Terroir Gin is our ode to the wild beauty of the Golden State. Distiller Lance Winters has a passion for exploring place and memory through distillation, and the aromas of the coastal forests on California's Mount Tam were what inspired him to start making gin in the first place. Terroir Gin has an intense earthy, woodsy nose and flavor derived from Douglas fir, California bay laurel, and California coastal sage—complemented by bright, citrusy top notes. This is a unique and proudly Californian gin with a sense of place and poetry.

Botanivore Gin (our "botanical eater") earned its name because it's loaded with botanical ingredients. We distilled 20 different botanicals to compose this spirit (no small feat!) and the resulting gin is beautifully balanced and vibrant. Lance compares this gin to an orchestra where all the components are working in harmony. Deliciously herbacious and bright, Botanivore is a versatile addition to any gin cocktail.

Dry Rye Gin has twice as much juniper in its recipe as either of the other two St. George gins, and a base of pot-distilled rye that provides structure and spice. Warm bass notes of pepper and caraway give Dry Rye Gin an intriguing depth of flavor, while the rye provides a sweet maltiness reminiscent of a genever. Try our Dry Rye Gin in your favorite cocktails that call for either gin or rye—or sip it straight for a gin experience like no other.

If you're familiar with St. George Absinthe Verte, you already know that distiller Lance Winters has mad skills at creating balanced distillates out of complex botanical formulations. For these three St. George gins, Lance retrofitted his beloved absinthe still with a custom-built Carter head assembly. The Carter head allows for elegant expression of the character of the juniper berries and other botanicals, while minimizing resinous and potentially acrid notes from carrying over during distillation.

Grand Teton Black Cauldron Imperial Stout...$8.99 / 4pk

There are few styles of beer more flavorful than Imperial Stout. Our
thick, rich version was brewed with plenty of caramel and roasted malts and subtly spiced with Nugget and Cascade hops. We’ve accentuated the natural smokiness of the brew by adding a small amount of beechwood-smoked malt. At 22 degrees starting gravity and 8.0% alcohol by volume, this beer boasts flavors of chocolate and coffee, along with raisins and dried fruit soaked in sherry.

Black Cauldron is a strong ale, best enjoyed in moderation, and paired with full-flavored grilled or roasted meats or with dessert. Chocolate cakes, truffles, fruit tarts, caramel flan or crème brûlée are all excellent matches.

We've brewed our Black Cauldron Imperial Stout to recognize and honor the women in the history of brewing. Brewing has been women's work since the dawn of civilization. In all ancient cultures, beer was a gift from a goddess, and women maintained status and power through their skills as brewsters. This remains true today in indigenous cultures from Asia to Latin America, Africa to remote villages in Scandinavia. Around the world, women baked bread and brewed their own beer.

In Europe, the rise of cities brought commercial brewing, as governments realized the potential tax revenue to be had from large breweries. By 1445, the first all-male brewers' guild was established, the campaign against witchcraft burst forth across Europe, and the purge of women from brewing had begun. Beer historian Alan Eames has written that, when an occupation was listed, most of the women burned for witchcraft in Europe were brewsters or alewives

Most of the imagery we associate with witchcraft today originated with the brewster. The large black cauldron bubbling over with foam? A brew kettle, of course. The black cat? Necessary to keep rats out of the grain store. The tall pointed hat? It allowed the brewster to be seen over the heads of taller men in the marketplace. A broom? The symbol of household domesticity, it is still associated with brewing all over the world.

Without the work of these women through the ages, it's entirely possible beer would not exist today. To learn more about the role of women in today's brewing industry, visit

Grand Teton XX Bitch Creek 2012 Double ESB Ale...$8.99 / 750ml
Twenty-four years ago Charlie Otto began making beer in Wyoming’s first modern brewery, a 210 square foot cabin in Jackson Hole. Since then, Grand Teton Brewing has grown into its present 11,000 square foot facility in Victor, Idaho, winning dozens of major awards and bringing innovations like the reusable glass growler to the brewing world.

Bitch Creek ESB (Extra Special Brown) Ale was first brewed in 2003, and perfectly balances big malt sweetness and robust hop flavor to make a full-bodied mahogany ale. Southern Idaho 2-row malted barley and four German specialty malts provide massive body and flavor. Two hop varieties developed in Idaho, Galena and Chinook, balance the maltiness with clean bitterness and citrus flavors. Late additions of Centennial hops add piney, resinous flavors and aroma.

Bitch Creek ESB has quickly become one of our best selling and most critically acclaimed beers. At last count, it has won eleven gold medals at major national and international competitions.

XX Bitch Creek Double ESB is all that and more. To celebrate our twentieth anniversary in 2008 we took the Bitch Creek recipe and doubled everything: double the malt, double the hops, and twice the flavor. It was one of the most popular and best-reviewed Cellar Reserves we’ve brewed. It is also one of the most requested of our retired Cellar Reserves.

Over the years we’ve learned a lot about cellaring beers, and for 2012 we’ve refocused our Cellar Reserve program on beers that will taste great now and will lay down and mature over one or two years’ time. Now that we have a large catalog of previously brewed styles, we’ll bring back one or two of our best aging beers each year. It is fitting that XX Bitch Creek be the first to make a repeat appearance. This beer will change over time—the hops will mellow and the bitterness diminish, but the solid malt backbone will carry through, eventually taking on vinous, sherry-like notes.

This is a strongly flavorful beer, which should be paired with only the most flavorful of foods. Drink it alone as a nightcap, try it with the best steaks, game meats and hearty stews, or pair it with strong blue cheese or rich bread pudding.

Nommo is back!

Nommo is here!  order online now

Second release of Nommo
Boulevard Smokestack Series Nommo Dubbel...$8.49 / 750ml

"Our Nommo Dubbel has a brilliant deep amber color and a sweet caramel malt profile. This beer showcases the coriander, cinnamon, and star anise used in the kettle, complementing them with clove and banana notes contributed by the Belgian yeast. The rich complexity of Nommo’s flavor makes it a worthy partner to a variety of meats and game, as well as aged or aromatic cheeses. The name “Nommo” is derived from a Dogon word meaning “to make one drink.” No, really. Nommo, usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Maybe it’s farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting." -- Boulevard

Domaine Trevallon - the best of Provence!

We are excited to bring Domaine de Trevallon back to St. Louis...

"One of the greatest discoveries in my life has been the wine made at the Domaine de Trevallon," - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2009 Domainde de Trevallon Rouge....$49.99
50% Caberenet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah

The word "cult wine" gets used a lot describe wines now, but there are some that deserve it.  Domaine de Trevallon has always been considered the cult wine of Provence.   The wine is in huge demand around the world.
The estate was purchased by Rene Durrbach back in 1955, but it was his son Eloi that planted the first vines in 1973 and produced his first wine in 1977 and helped establish "Les Beaux de Provence" as a top wine producing area in France.   Domaine de Trevallon has always been a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah.   As you can see from the current label above, it no longer says AOC "Les Beaux de Provence".   The wine has not changed, the law changed in 1993 -- "Les Beaux de Provence" can now only contain a maximum of 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, so the wine is now labeled "Indication Geographique Protegee" -- basically the new name for Vin de Pays.    Eloi Durrbach followed in the tradition of the Italian Super Tuscans, he did not want to compromise his wines by "laws", he wanted to keep the quality and integrity of his wine so he took the "Vin de Pays" designation and kept his wine the way he wanted it.

It was back in 1978 that Aubert de Vilaine from the Domaine de la Romanée Conti tasted the wines and was so impressed that he recommend his importer, Kermit Lynch to import the wines into the United States.   Kermit Lynch no longer imports the wine, but the quality remains the same.

A word about the label:
Before Eloi's father died in 2000, Eloi had his father, Rene, create a series of artwork to be used as labels for the wine.  He created a number labels before his death and a different one is used every year.   One of Rene's best friends was Pablo Picasso (also the godfather of Eloi)

“Tonight is a good night. No. Tonight is a great night!”
That’s what was running through my head as I sat down to write my Jefferson’s Ocean-Aged Bourbon Review. I was, in all honesty, as excited as a grade schooler watching the minute hand on a clock wind down the final minutes til Summer vacation. I was finally going to taste the almost mythical Jefferson’s Ocean-Aged Bourbon. The bourbon that has occupied my mind ever since I heard rumors of it last year.

Jefferson’s “Ridiculously Small Batch” bourbons have always occupied a special place in my heart. It was the first brand of bourbon that my wife bought for me. It was a sign that despite her lack of interest in drinking bourbon she could still be trusted with making important purchasing decisions. So when I heard that Jefferson’s was coming out with something truly unique and special I was all ears.

Trey Zoeller showing who’s the master of bourbon at sea.

I started digging around on the web and learned all I could about the so called “Ocean” bourbon and called around to my local connections to see if I had a chance to actually get my hands on a bottle. When you hear that only 600 bottles are going to be released you’ve got to put your game face on and call in some favors. Little did I know that I would get a unique opportunity to be one of the first to sample and review the “Bourbon Unicorn” as I’ve come to call it.

I received my sample last week from the kind folks at McLain & Kyne and I’ve kept it under lock and key since then.(Special thanks to Trey and his team for allowing me the privilege to enjoy an early sample of their hard work.)

Trey Zoeller collecting the first pitcher of Jefferson’s Ocean-Aged Bourbon.

I’m sure many of you have read up on Jefferson’s Ocean-Aged Bourbon already but here’s a little more information direct from the source:

Trey carries on the tradition of his ancestors, the McLains and the Kynes, who both have roots deep in the bourbon industry dating back to the late 18th and 19th centuries. The Jefferson’s Bourbon brand portfolio, which is distributed in 46 states and 9 countries, consists of four “Ridiculously Small Batch” spirits: Jefferson’s Bourbon, Jefferson’s Reserve, Jefferson’s Presidential Select and Jefferson’s Rye. In the age where small batch bourbons are made from 200-300 bottles in big distilleries, Trey knows good things come in small batches. He carefully chooses from no more than 8-12 barrels to deliver a unique, yet consistent flavor profile for each of his four whiskies.

This summer, Trey will introduce Jefferson’s Ocean-Aged Bourbon to his line of Ridiculously Small Batch whiskeys. The brand’s new addition is blended in Kentucky, aged in barrels for almost four years on a 126-foot ship, and bottled at a robust 88 proof (44% ABV). Trey was curious about what effects temperature changes, salt air, and continuous rocking of the sea would have on bourbon’s aging process. The result of the experiment is a dark and rich bourbon which rivals whiskeys aged for much longer. There are only 600 bottles of the rare product available and they’re going to be released nationally.

Camus Island Cognacs

Camus Ile de Re Fine Island Cognac...$44.99
“With it’s fresh, marine notes, Camus Ile de Re Fine Island Cognac perfectly expresses the quality and authentic character of the cognacs produced on the island. Distilled on the lees to further enhance the original flavours of the eaux de vie from which it is produced, it is then aged in a damp cellar to give it roundness, in oak casks with subtle tannins that instil a delicate woody flavour. A cognac with a hint of the sea, which is softened by fruit notes and an incredibly round body. Fresh and light iodized flavours mingle with notes of dried fruits and lead to a slightly salty and very characteristic mellow finish.” - website

Camus’s Ile de Re Fine Island Double Matured Cognac...$61.99
“ powerful, with hints of the sea. This exceptional cognac presents a perfect balance of smoky notes and candied fruits. Distilled on the lees, which enhances original flavour of its eaux de vie, it is the result of a unique aging process. It is first matured on the island in a damp cellar, in casks with light tannins, for roundness and subtly oaky flavor. Then a second aging takes place in Cognac, in barrels that have been slightly charred, giving the cognac a smoky flavour. A subtle, delicate balance between smoky notes, candied fruit and a distinctive marine quality.” - website

Camus Ile de Re Cliffside Cellar Cognac....$79.99
This unique cognac is a spicy iodized and very mellow blend of eaux de vie produced, distilled and initially aged in a damp cellar located on the island itself. Its mild character and subtle iodine quality develop during the second aging, on the island, in a cellar situated in the heart of the cliff top Fort de la Pree, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Fort de la Pree was built in 1626 and is a rare example of military architecture from before Vauban. This cognac presents various marine flavors and an extraordinary round body.” - website
