Boulevard / Orval Collaboration?

Collaboration with Missouri's own Boulevard?

The brewmaster for Boulevard was in St. Louis not too long ago and mentioned that they were doing a collaboration with another brewery -- he would not divulge any more details. I asked him: was it with another American craft brewer? European? He would not say.

And then this week --
Jean-Marie Rock was in Kansas City visiting the brewery? Could that be the collaboration? Jean-Marie Rock, the brewmaster of the famous trappist brewery -- ORVAL? Boulevard would not confirm the rumor. We will have to wait and see, but that would be one exciting collaboration!

Right now, you can enjoy the great beers separately:
If you have not had Orval -- give one a try - very delicious!
Orval Trappist Ale
"The gustative sensations will gain in nuance depending on the age of the beer. Young beer is characterised by a bouquet of fresh hops, with a fruity note and pronounced bitterness, light on the palate and a less firm collar than a beer of six months. The latter will feature a bouquet consisting of a blend of fragrances of yeast and old-fashioned hop. The bitterness is more diffuse and the taste has moved to a slight touch of acidity accompanying yeast and caramel flavours. Served without its sediments, a beer of six months or more, has a particularly bright appearance." -- Orval

Adam Avery visits St. Louis

It was nice to meet Adam Avery tonight at the store:

I thought it might be nice to remind people about their great beers since he took the time to travel to St. Louis.

Avery Beers have been in St. Louis for just over a year now!

Avery has some great regular beers like Avery IPA, 14er ESB, Ellie's Brown, Out of Bounds Stout, New World Porter, White Rascal, Redpoint and more -- to read more

Holy Trinity Series

Avery Hog Heaven
Beer Style: Barleywine Style Ale
Hop Variety: Columbus
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, caramel 75L
OG: 1.085 ABV: 9.2% IBUs: 104

This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover's delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel candy-like malt finish. This is a serious beer for serious beer afficianados and it only gets better with age. Cellarable for 3 years.

Avery The Reverend
Beer Style: Belgian Quadrupel Ale
Hop Variety: Styrian Goldings
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, cara 8, cara 20, caramel 15L, caramel 40L, Belgian special B
OG: 1.093 ABV: 10.0% IBUs: 10
Color: Tawny

The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for up to 4 years.

Avery Salvation
Beer Style: Belgian Strong Golden Ale
Hop Variety: Styrian Goldings
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, cara 8, cara 20
OG: 1.080 ABV: 9.0% IBUs: 25
Color: Golden

The success of Hog Heaven and The Reverend clearly demonstrates that beer drinkers are willing to embrace "BIGGER" beers. In the fall of 2001, we decided that a lighter BIG BEER would complement its darker colored predecessors. Salvation has luscious apricot and peach aromas delicately interwoven with spicy suggestions of nutmeg and cinnamon. This heavenly soft, champagne-like elixer is cellarable for 3 years.

Avery "The Beast" Series

Avery Mephistopheles Stout
Beer Style: Stout
Hop Variety: Magnum, Styrian Goldings
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, black malt, roasted barley,Belgian special B, aromatic
OG: 1.145 ABV: 15.1% IBUs: 107

Color: Coal Black

Availability: One vintage brewed and bottled December 1st of each year. 12oz single bottles. Limited quantities.

Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. IBU's 107.
Mephistopheles is the final installment of “The Demons of Ale” series.

Avery The Beast
Beer Style: Belgian Grand Cru
Hop Variety: Magnum, Galena, Saaz, Hallertau, Tettnang, Hersbrucker
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Belgian Special B, honey malt, aromatic, pale wheat, roaste
d wheat
OG: 1.148 ABV: 14.9% IBUs: 68
Color: Burgundy

The Beast is a seducer - accomodating, complicated, powerful, dark and created to last the ages. With a deep burgundy color and aromas of honey, nutmeg, mandarin orange and pineapple, this massive and challenging brew has flavors akin to a beautiful Carribean rum. Dates, plums, raisins and molasses are dominant in a rich vinous texture. Cellarable for 1
0+ years.

Avery Samaels Oak Aged Ale
Beer Style: Oak Aged English Strong Ale
Hop Variety: Columbus, Fuggels
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, caramel 150L
OG: 1.140 ABV: 14.5 IBUs: 41
Color: Copper

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. Notes for 2007 - With the addition of an additional roasted malt, Samael's now delivers subtle bitterness to add balance to the natural sweetness.

Danish Porter

Thisted Bryghus Limfjords Porter....$4.49 / 11.2oz
"Limfjords Porter came to Thisted Bryghus after seven years of experiments at an urban brewery in Aalborg where the brewmaster of Thisted Bryghus used to work before it was closed. THisted bought the name in 1986 and in 1997 the brewmaster finally decided that he had achieved the perfect composition of malts. The most notable ingredients are smoked malt, rye malt, and licorice from England. Limfjords Porter is the Brewmaster's pet project and is often called "The Gentleman of Beers". -- importer

Notes from the late Michael Jackson:
"... The surprise climax to the tasting was labelled in English as a Double Brown Stout and in Danish with the local name of Limfjords Porter. Like other Danish beers in this style it was bottom-fermenting, but it was full of character, a dense, brownish, head over a slatey, black, brew; full-bodied and lightly oily; a touch of burnt-grass, rooty, peatiness; a long, warming, finish, and an alcohol content of 7.9%. The flavors were very complex, and I was not surprised to hear that both smoked malt and licorice were used." -- Michael Jackson

Scotch Club for St. Louis

A new Single Malt Society for St. Louis.....

If you're a fan of single malt scotches, or would like to learn more about them, you're invited to join Drummond McDougall's Single Malt Society.

The goal of the Society is to create a fun and informal atmosphere for tasting the many scotches available. There are far too many, and they are far too costly, for most of us to sample more than a few.

Enter Drummond MacDougall. The Single Malt Society will allow you to sample five quality single malts at every tasting, encompassing a variety of distilleries, styles and price ranges. We’ll also enjoy some cheese and crackers, and learn a little about the history and legend of scotch whiskys.

The Society will meet every other month at the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton, Missouri.

So whether you’re well-versed in the wonders of scotch, or would like to learn, there’s a place at the tasting table waiting for you at the Single Malt Society.

If you'd like to learn more, please visit their website at
