Hop Czar is in town...

With the craziness of yesterday (Lagunitas tasting, Batch 9,000, new bacon, fresh eggs) we were slammed and this one got overlooked.

Imperial IPA from Oregon

"Oregon's Oldest Craft Brewery"
"A robust ruler of IPA is here. All Hail the King!"

The newest in our permenant 6-pack line, the Hop Czar recipe blends copious amounts of Nugget, Chinook, Cascade and Centennial hops." -- brewery

Black Pig Meat Company...$11.99 / 12oz package

Black Pig Meat co. is the brainchild of chefs Duskie Estes and John Stewart from two great California restaurants: Zazu restaurant + farm, and Bovolo. Their pigs are with antibiotics, hormone free, free range and they are Heritage Breed like the chickens we get our Farm Fresh Eggs. Read more about Heritage breed animals -- click here

the pigs
Our pork comes from Pure Country Pork in the Northwest which is the first sustainable hog operation in the United States to earn Food Alliance Certification. The pigs are heritage breed, raised without antibiotics and hormones, and are allowed to roam free range.

the process
Most bacons you find on the market are wet cured injected fast and smoky from liquid smoke in a process that takes less than a day. We slow down and make sure it tastes good and the animals are treated right. Our Bacon is dry cured with brown sugar for up to 21 days and then finished with applewood smoking for about 12 hours. We are focused on quality not quantity.

the bacon
The result is a bacon that is perfectly balanced in salt, sweet, and smoke; complex from the brown sugar and real wood smoke; and one where you can taste the quality of the pork

Lagunitas new releases....

A couple of new seasonals from Lagunitas should arrive this week!
"As the four winds shift, we see seasons come and seasons go. It seems these days like people's tastes shift as often as do the winds. We know for sure that we like to try something new from time to time. Seasonal flavors abound in the many different foods that we enjoy at certain times of the year, so why not with beer? Fall and Winter call for richness and warmth, while Spring and Summer call for crispness and refreshment. So it goes that colder weather calls for Brown Shugga and Hairy Eyeball Ale, while Summer beckons for Sirius Ale. Our brewers love the challenge of a new recipe, while our drinkers love the challenge of figuring out what the hell the weird story on the side panel has to do with the beer in the bottle." -- Lagunitas

New from Vajra

2006 G D Vajra Freisa Kye....$39.99 / 750ml
"The 2006 Langhe Freisa Kye is an explosive wine loaded with dark fruit, violets, minerals and spices. This full-throttle, brooding red possesses stunning concentration, depth and richness, with none of the rustic elements that are typical of this indigenous variety. I was simply blown away by this profound, moving wine. Vajra has redefined the potential of Freisa with the 2006 Kye. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.

Vajra is one of Piedmont’s best kept secrets. Here readers will enter a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level. Aldo and Milena Vajra’s passion comes through in spades in these terrific new releases, which I can’t recommend highly enough."

Jolly Pumpkin #1 in the NY Times

In a blind tasting conducted by the New York Times of 20 Belgian style beers...

Jolly Pumpkin Ora de Calabaza was voted #1

"A GOOD selection of Belgian-style ales is like the very best kind of buffet, offering an assortment of flavors, aromas, styles, strengths and types. You want strong ale, sour ale, sweet ale, dry ale, golden, dark, wheat, fruity and malty. When we set out to draw a stylistic standard for a planned tasting of Belgian golden ales, it seemed as if we’d taken on an impossible task. But glory does not come to those who quit easily....The blind tasting of these 20 Belgian-style ales was truly glorious, beer at its highest level. For the tasting Florence Fabricant and I were joined by Christian Pappanicholas, the owner of Resto, a Belgian restaurant in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan, and Richard Scholz, an owner of Bierkraft in Park Slope, Brooklyn....Of the 20 beers we tasted, 10 were from Belgium, nine from the United States and one from Canada. It says something about the skill and ambition of American brewers that three of our top four were from the United States.

Our No. 1 beer was the Oro de Calabaza from Jolly Pumpkin, which, like the Good Harbor Ale, is from Dexter, Mich., a small town near Ann Arbor. A cabal of Belgian beer lovers in Dexter?" -- The New York Times

Johnnie Walker Swing

This rare one just arrived at Rock Hill and Forsyth
Johnnie Walker Swing Scotch...$59.99 / 750ml
Johnnie Walker Swing was originally created by Sir Alexander Walker, Master Blender par excellence and grandson of John Walker, during the golden age of travel in 1932. On transatlantic voyages, barmen desperately stowed loose bottles onto racks to prevent breakages caused by the unrelenting pitch and roll of stormy weather on the high seas.
But one bottle rode the ocean waves like the most experienced of sailors, swinging elegantly back and forth and — in keeping with the Johnnie Walker philosophy — never losing its balance. Its unique glass decanter allows it to swing to and fro on a convex base. And cradled within this bottle lay a blend of Scotch whisky with a light yet luxurious depth of flavor.
Today, a global audience of sophisticated international travelers continues to recognize Swing as one of the most luxurious blends of Scotch whisky available, duty-free, proving that true quality is indeed timeless.

A blend of luxury

Up to thirty-five individual whiskies are used in the creation of Swing, each carefully selected by the Master Blender, whose task it is to consistently reproduce the original character of the blend devised by Sir Alexander Walker.
The blend contains a high proportion of malts from Speyside, where the single malts are noted for their elegance and complexity. Complementing them are malts from the northern Highlands and Islay, adding richness, spice and weight. Some have been matured in sherry casks over several years to gain richness, while others are lighter and aromatic. The result: a luxurious flavor that's light in the foreground, with sweet mouth-watering depth developing on the palate.

Equilibrium in a glass

Swing strikes the perfect balance between luxuriousness and sophistication. At first glance, its rich, golden tones effortlessly tease out the indulgent nature within each of us. At first taste, the deeper Swing experience will move you.
Ideally, Swing is served on the rocks, neat or diluted with water. Its nose is complex and sophisticated with almost perfumed sweetness. Unquestionably soft and accessible, you are sure to notice the fanciful vanilla and sherry-cask wood notes wafting through. Its palate is smooth and sweet. But its light freshness cloaks a deeper fruitiness, with some smoke and restrained flavors lingering beyond. Finally, a lengthy and rich finish, reverberating with sweetness, completes the movement.

"Boldly treading the boundary between port, wine and beer, l'Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien is a unique ale aged in wooden casks which have been used for several years before to age Merlot, Merlot Cabernet, Whisky and then Grappa. It manages to merge into L'Abbaye all the complex aromas of a vintage red wine along with the delicate harmony and flavors of the wood and its former contents. This process requires close monitoring of the beer's evolution. The final version is blended from different casks, to ensure optimal balance, complexity and enjoyment! A mere one thousand bottles have been earmarked for the US market in 2006. [Thus named in fond memory of Bon-Chien, the late brewery cat, deceased in June 2005, whose antics were very popular with brewery visitors]" -- importer

Info about Gerry Murray of Jameson
Gerry Murray was born in the city of Dublin where he lived for five years, before moving to the small town of Navan (pronounced Naaaavan), Co. Meath on the East coast of the country. Apart from this year’s Jameson Brand Ambassador, the town of Navan has produced some familiar names you might know such as Ireland’s top comedian Tommy Tiernan, and Mr. Cool, Pierce ‘James Bond’ Brosnan!
It was here where Gerry discovered his love of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Working in a bar, he was subjected to a wide range of spirits but there was only one for him. He can often be seen with a glass of Jameson Gold in his hand, enjoying that smooth, creamy taste. He was educated in Dublin, attending the Dublin Institute of Technology and University College Dublin. He obtained a Degree and Masters in Marketing during his studies.
His favorite hobbies are Gaelic football and soccer. He learned his trade with Navan O’Mahonys, before getting a transfer to Amsterdam Gaelic Football club last year. It was here in the Netherlands where he also worked as a Brand Ambassador for Jameson, giving whiskey tastings, building relationships with bar staff, organizing Jameson sponsorship for events, and generally just spreading the good word of John Jameson.
He managed to influence some of Amsterdam’s coolest sons and daughters. They were found to be ‘Slammin Jemmies’ all over the city, spreading the word amongst their trendy, cosmopolitan friends. After his year in Amsterdam, Gerry is eager to embark on a bigger challenge of spreading the John Jameson message throughout the United States. However he knows all he needs is a warm handshake with a smile and to live by the Jameson family motto, Sine Metu – Without Fear.
