Duncan Taylor Dalmore 20 Year Old...$94.99
Distilled 1990
Bottled 2010
Only 305 bottles produced

The critically acclaimed and award winning Rare Auld collection represents Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch whiskies of outstanding quality from Scotland’s prime whisky producing regions - Speyside, Islay, Highland, Island, Lowland and Campbeltown.

The majority of casks within this range are over 30 years old. They include a variety of cask types including Sherry, Port, American Oak Bourbon and wine.

The whiskies are bottled as single casks at cask strength with no chillfiltration or colouring. Each bottle of this collection is individually identified with information detailing the distillery and region or origin, distillation date, cask number, cask strength, date bottled and individual bottle number from the limited number available in each cask.

Dalmore might just be the most legendary distillery in the world when it comes to creating stunning whisky with real provenance. Even the distillery itself looks incredible, as it overlooks the Cromarthy Firth - an estuary from whose banks rise impressive slopes specked with green thicket and wooded copse. The house style is undeniably one of rich, full-bodied whisky, with orange, chocolate and coffee flavours and Dalmore whisky is regularly enjoyed as a post dinner digestif.

Each hand-selected cask is matured at the original distillery to allow it to age in the environment in which it was distilled. A cask is only bottled when it reaches its optimum age and quality.

2009 Bouchard Burgundy

2009 Bouchard Burgundy

2009 Bouchard Pommard...$48.99
Tasting note: "Proust said that about 60% of this blend was from domaine fruit. An expressive nose speaks of pretty red berry fruit with subtle earth and sauvage hints that carry over to the rich and relatively full-bodied flavors that are shaped by moderately rustic tannins and a notably firm finish where a hint of wood surfaces. This is quite good but note that patience will be required, especially for a villages-level wine." - Burghound

2009 Bouchard Vigne de L'Enfant de Jesus...$91.99
Tasting note: "Moderate wood sets off very ripe aromas of black cherry, plum and wet stone that also characterizes the extremely rich yet beautifully detailed flavors that possess superb intensity as well as fine complexity on the tension-filled and wonderfully persistent finish. Terrific."
Rated 91-94/100 Burghound

2009 Bouchard Nuits Saint Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru...$89.99
Tasting note: A very ripe, indeed even slightly surmature nose of mild reduction, mocha and menthol aromas introduces extremely rich yet reasonably delineated medium weight plus flavors that are unexpectedly cool and tension-filled on the dusty and palate staining finish. Notwithstanding the cool impression of the finish, this is riper than I like and it affects the expression of the underlying terroir.
Rated 89-91/100 Allen Meadows' Burghound

2009 Bouchard Nuits Saint Georges...$43.99
Tasting note: "A ripe, earthy and somber red and dark berry fruit nose gives way to rich, forward and utterly delicious flavors that are quite firm but only mildly rustic, all wrapped in a mocha-infused finish where a hint of bitter chocolate can be found." -- Burghound

2009 Meo Camuzet

Order 2009 Burgs online now

The great 2009s of Meo Camuzet
2009 Meo Camuzet Corton Les Perrieres Grand Cru...$244.99
Tasting note: This is fresher than the Vigne au Saint with a bit more elegance as well with primarily red berry fruit-liqueur aromas that are liberally cut with wet stone and soft earth notes that continue onto the well-delineated flavors that possess a completely different mouth feel as here the palate impression is linear to the point of being almost strict as the minerality is almost pungent. Despite the austerity, this is really quite classy.
Rated 92-94/100 Burghound

2009 Meo Camuzet Corton Clos Rognet...$289.99
Tasting note: A lavishly fruited nose of essence black raspberry and game hints marries into opulently rich and mouth coating broad-shouldered flavors that are loaded with dry extract that buffers to perfection the very firm tannic spine on the overtly powerful and tautly muscular finish. This is a seriously impressive effort and the best of these three Cortons as the old vine sap is very much in evidence.
Rated 93-95/100 Burghound

2009 Meo Camuzet Bourgogne Rouge...$37.99
2009 Meo Camuzet Bourgogne Blanc....$35.99

2009 Meo Camuzet Fixin....$53.99

Tasting note: A pungently earthy, fresh and ripe nose of primarily red berry fruit aromas merges into rich, ample and generous flavors that possess a velvety mouth feel and good concentration on the sappy and reasonably persistent finish. A quality villages. -- Burghound

Tasting the Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad

Tasting beer out of the barrel!!!

Monday, November 7th, tasting at Schlafly Tap Room of Schlafly Quadrupel aged in The Wine and Cheese Place Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrel.

The beer has been in the barrel for just over 3 months (put in barrel August 5, 2011).   I have tasted a lot of wine out of the barrel, but this is the first beer that I have ever tasted out of a barrel.   It is very exciting, I think you are going to love this beer once it is bottled.   It was tasting pretty damn good to me.   The general consensus with the brewers at Schlafly (Stephen, Brennan, and Augie) was that it could be bottled now, but we are going to wait a little longer and see what happens.

Brennan of Schlafly "tapping" the barrel so we can taste...

Here is a look at the label...

Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Aged Quadrupel
"A Schlafly beer for
The Wine and Cheese Place"

Release Date:  Yet to be determined.   Schlafly Brewmaster, Stephen Hale, will taste periodically and decide when it is ready for release.  He predicted anywhere between 3-6 months of barrel aging.  Currently it has been in barrel for about 3 months already!

Production:  Very limited production.  Depending on evaporation we should see 20-22 cases of 750ml bottles of beer.

Price: Yet to be determined ($11-$14 / 750ml)

Where to purchase:  The beer will be available at all 4 of The Wine and Cheese Place locations plus online at

Delicious wine from the unknown grape of Jacquère...

Apremont -- crisp and clean!

Pierre Boniface - Les Rocailles 2010 Apremont

2010 Pierre Boniface Vin Savoie Apremont...$15.99
This wine is produced on the French side of the Alps (Savoie Region) right across from Switzerland and is very similar to Swiss white wines but we think it is even better and much better priced (Swiss wines tend to be expensive).    It is made from 100%
Jacquère. and is unoaked.   It is great with cheeses including of course Tomme de Savoie from the same region.  Plus if you want a white wine with Raclette, give this one a try.
"This light, crisp, dry white from the French Alps is pure and vibrant. It brings to mind a Granny Smith apple with a touch of honeysuckle. Serve as an aperitif or an accompaniment to lighter fish and poultry dishes." -- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

As the weather cools down, it is time to think about Raclette for dinner...

Raclette Season is here!
"Raclette, a semi-firm cheese from the Swiss and French Alps, is a fun and different way to enjoy cheese at a friendly get-together on a cool fall or cold winter night. Raclette, which means “scraper,” is traditionally hung on a fork in from of a fire so that the face of the cheese softens. As it melts, it is scraped off the cheese slab and eaten with boiled new potatoes, pickled onions, and cornichons. Today there is an easier way. Electric raclette melters are available for borrow (for free) or for sale from The Wine and Cheese Place, along with properly sliced French or Swiss raclette. Slices of raclette are placed in individual melting trays for a few moments, and then spread on fresh slices of French bread. This is an easy and delicious alternative to fondue ~ no mixing and heating ingredients ahead of time! The texture of raclette is very smooth, and seems to melt in your mouth even without heating. The taste is rich, reminiscent of wine and fruit, with a pronounced tang. Thinly sliced dried ham, such as prosciutto, iberico or serrano is an excellent accompliment. Raclette, thin ham slices, bread, boiled potatoes, pickled onions and sour gerkins, make for a light and festive supper for friends or family. Serve with a great hearty red like Segries Cotes du Rhone.
-- Bonnie Canning, cheesemonger
