There's more ripeness in the nose and flavors of the 2020 Amancaya, reflecting the warm and dry vintage. It has 14.5% alcohol and was produced with a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Malbec, reversing the dominant grape to combine the fruit and freshness of Malbec with the power and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Fifty percent of the volume matured in oak barrels while the other half was kept in concrete to keep the fruit-driven profile with a soft palate and round tannins. 122,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022.

The red 2022 Nativas Tinto was produced with old-vine João de Santarém, the local old clone of Castelão. The grapes were foot trodden in lagar with a short maceration of five days, then the wine aged in stainless steel. They don't like the oak with reds; they used barrels for the whites but not for the reds. It has a balsamic nose with notes of bay leaf. It's not a fruit bomb and has a tender palate with polished tannins—from the shortish maceration—with integrated acidity in a warmer and drier year.

The 2022 Nativas Tinto from Ramilo is composed entirely from Castelão. The grapes are destemmed and then foot trodden in open air lagars, prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and the 2022 version tips the scales at a svelte 12.5 percent alcohol. The wine’s aromatic constellation is bright and classy, offering up notes of red and black cherries, dark berries, a touch of tree bark, a lovely base of soil, just a wisp of sweet botanicals and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, fullish and shows just a touch of spritz, with lovely intensity of flavor and bounce, fine balance and a long, focused and complex finish. This is light on its feet and a beautiful accompaniment to wide range of dishes at the table. 2025-2035.

Here’s what you need to know about the French white wine that is a surprisingly great value....

The Chablis region is divided into four AOCs: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. One of the key attributes that distinguishes these Chardonnay-exclusive AOCs from each other is soil type. Grapes in Petit Chablis are grown on Portlandian-limestone soil, while grapes in the other three AOCs are grown on Kimmeridgian soil, which imparts a characteristic minerality for which Chablis wines are well known around the world. Chardonnay grapes grown on Portlandian soil produce wines that are lighter, fresher and more straightforward, with slightly less minerality than grapes grown on Kimmeridgian soil. 

Climate Change to the Rescue
Climate change has significantly improved Petit Chablis’s lot, as it has the Chablis region as a whole—grapes are noticeably riper than they were 20 years ago. Planted at higher elevations, grapes in Petit Chablis that once struggled to ripen are now fully ripening and perfectly positioned to benefit from climate change. This has transformed a once austere-wine-producing appellation into one that is approaching the quality levels of Chablis AOC.
Don’t Let ‘Petit’ Mislead You
So, when you see “Petit Chablis,” don’t think “Little Chablis.” Think “Portlandian Chablis,” which more accurately captures the wine’s relationship to its terroir and with the other Chablis AOCs.

So, why should you be paying attention to Petit Chablis now? The wine is a great value with increasing quality. It’s approaching the point where it can compete with Chablis, even if it’s not quite there yet.

This is the best best grapes from the best vineyards, only made in great years!!  The “Cuvée L'Éneïde really shows off the great terroir at Château Virgile. The vines, situated at the edge of a plateau, produce a very dark and concentrated Costières de Nîmes. The nose is intense with cherry and black raspberry notes. In the mouth the wine is dense with rich black fruit flavors complemented by hints of black pepper and garrigue. The wine finishes with ripe round tannins. This is a crowd-pleasing wine, that is an excellent complement to classic dishes, like steak au poivre. Enjoy!

Blend: 50% Syrah and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon
Since its inception, Domaine de Trévallon has been a trailblazer for quality wine production in the South of France. In 1993 local authorities changed the regulations for grape production in the appellation of Les Beaux de Provence, lowering the permitted percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon to 20%. Domaine de Trévallon’s red is always a blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Refusing to change his style, Eloi opted to produce his wine as a Vin de Pays (Vin de Pays des Bouches du Rhône). By doing so Domaine de Trévallon, like todays “super-Tuscans”, was among the first wineries to choose to go outside local appellation rules to produce higher quality wines.
Above all, Eloi produces “natural wines” with as little human intervention as possible. He avoids excess use of technology which he believes leads to standardized, uniform wines. Eloi uses no pesticides or chemicals in the vineyards and he keeps yields below 25 hectoliters per hectare. In the winery the grapes are not de-stemmed, and only natural indigenous yeasts are used. The reds are aged in large oak foudres for 2 years , are non-filtered, and are only occasionally fined with egg whites before bottling. The reds from Trévallon are always 50% Cabernet Sauvignon & 50% Syrah.

Eloi and Floriane Dürrbach have fond memories of the early years of their estate: “Aubert de Villaine, from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, was the first to be impressed by our wines. In 1978, he tasted them at the Beaumanière restaurant. He then spoke to his importer in the United States, who was also won over and started buying our reds from us. This importer spoke about it to Robert Parker who tasted vintage 82. He really liked it. We were also the first wine from the Alpilles that Robert Parker spoke about! It was 1984 and that was the beginning for us. We were better known abroad than in France.”

The Vineyards: Located at 2400 ft. above sea level, these grapes were estate- grown at our Hay Station Ranch vineyard where warm days are cooled by the evening mountain air. This area’s unique soil of decomposed granite mixed with volcanic sediment and red clay produce a wonderful mineral component. Grapes have been grown in the Sierra Foothills for 150 years.

The 2011 Côtes Catalanes Rancio Macabeu is Rancio perfection. When served, its perfume fills the room without even smelling the glass. A pure Macabeu, it is intense, revealing a crisp freshness and sharpness that enhances the aromatic complexity of the wine. Notes of caramel, orange zest, toasted almonds, dates, and dried apricot are joined on the finish by butter croissant notes, walnut tart, and a hint of cigar. It may be challenging for someone who doesn't know the style, but it’s otherwise balanced and stunning, with a very long finish. It really is a world apart, unapologetic, and we love it for exactly that reason. Drink 2025-2050.

If you are not familiar with this wine - it is a dry, "oxidized" wine similar in style to a dry sherry or Madeira. Since it is oxidized, it can be opened and enjoyed for a few months.  It is not fortified even though it is 20% ABV, the grapes are picked very late so they have a high sugar content.

The palate is medium-bodied, with a pillowing mousse, a rounded midpalate, and a very nice finish. It’s a very appealing wine all around and a solid aperitif with a good deal of versatility. Very nicely done. Drink 2025-2032.

Great new vintage of La Rousse Malbec delivers a polished, modern expression of Malbec with an emphasis on balance and varietal clarity. The nose opens with ripe blackberry and black plum, layered with violet, cocoa powder, and a subtle graphite note. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, showing fresh acidity and finely textured tannins that frame flavors of dark cherry, blueberry, and gentle spice. Any oak influence is restrained, adding hints of vanilla and toast without overshadowing the fruit. The new vintage is 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache

The grapes for this wine are organically grown in sandy clay soil in two different parcels: 4 hectares surrounding the domaine; and 4.5 hectares in the quarter called le Moulinas. The yields are 45 to 50 hl/ha and the vines average 40 years in age. The grapes are harvested by hand with a hand triage to select only the best quality grapes. They are de-stemmed and crushed, followed by maceration in temperature controlled tanks. The two grape varietals are vinified separately based on the time at which they are harvested. This ensures that each grape variety is brought in and vinified at optimal maturity. The wine rests in tank and is racked 2 to 3 times over the winter.

The 2023 “La Source” Pinot Noir is a classically styled, terroir-driven expression from Silver Eagle Vineyard atop Stoetz Ridge, where the Russian River meets the Sonoma Coast just five miles from the Pacific. Brilliant in the glass with deep violet highlights, the wine combines a silky, weightless texture with striking transparency and lift. Aromas of plum and cassis unfold alongside woodsy truffle notes, violets, and warm cinnamon, reflecting a cool, even ripening season that delivered exceptional color, purity, and complexity. Rigorously limited yields and Vosne-Romanée clonal material contribute to the wine’s depth and structure, while traditional Burgundian élevage—barrel fermentation, 14 months in air-dried French oak from the Tronçais Forest, and no fining or filtration—adds balance and finesse rather than overt oak.
