Wine Orbit is a website featuring reviews of New Zealand wines and wines of the world. It is solely written by Sam Kim unless otherwise stated. Its aim is to provide the wine industry, trade and wine enthusiasts with reviews from a senior wine judge’s perspective. Sam Kim holds a Certificate in Winemaking from EIT (Hawke’s Bay), and has been judging wine for the last 20 years at various wine competitions and magazines.

Mount Fishtail Sauvignon Blanc “Sur Lie” is different from the 300+ labels currently in the market. One has to remember that more than 80% of all Marlborough SB’s are made with fruit that is contract grown and contract processed. This means that there is little control over yield sizes, picking regimens, processing methods and winemaker manipulation. The fact that the vast majority of all Kiwi SB is made with a single clone, called UCD1, and is processed in the same way, with (often) overcropped fruit, suggests that consumers are unlikely to tell the difference from one wine to the other, since they all taste so alike. In the end, the only thing that matters becomes the price. Wines like this one, prove that there can be a stylistic renaissance for Marlborough SB and we think that this development of more mid palate texture, is the perfect solution for the American market.
SUR LIE AGEING: The process of allowing this wine to sit on the lees (left over dead yeast cells) in order to extract flavors and enrich the palate. Wines aged on their lees tend to be creamier, richer, fuller-bodied, with greater depth and complexity.

Alexander Murray

Alex Murray Dalmore 15yr...$119.99 / 750ml
In one of quirkiest distillation setups in Scotland, Dalmore distillery produces spirit that represents one of the extremes of the ever-so-difficult-to-categorize Highland region. Entirely dissimilar to its Oban, Glenmorangie or any of the other well-known Highland contenders, its character is arguably more-akin to some of the ‘Speysiders’.
Decidedly odd flat-top stills – which certainly allow a seasoned malt enthusiast a double-take when entering the still house – are in place at the distillery. One of but a handful in Scotland, Dalmore also employs water jackets – ‘bains marie’ – to promote reflux during distillation and thus lighten the resulting spirit; inconsistent still sizes add to the peculiarity. For sure an odd configuration; like Jim Furyk’s golf swing Dalmore proves that there’s no ‘right way’ of producing the goods.
Cereal led, there’s a real malt-loaf character about the spirit produced here which handles a good rest in sherry casks like a dream. As such, that’s always been the favored scheme at Dalmore, although not exclusively.
Reminiscent of the holiday season and all its glorious flavors, Dalmore is an explosive Christmas cracker that always ought to be on the table.
Alex Murray Glen Garioch 20yr...$119.99 / 750ml
Causing confusion since 1797, Glen Garioch (yes it really is pronounced glen-GHEE-ree) has been responsible for a significant proportion of Scottish bartenders’ wry smirks in recent decades, since showing prominence as a frequently ordered single malt.
Its name is Doric, which is an entirely incomprehensible dialect spoken in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, where men are ‘loons’ and women are ‘quines’, and where walking down the street, a sharp “fit like” is a genuinely friendly salutation. It all sounds odd, but these unique pastures represent the birthplace and heritage of Alexander Murray & Co.
Perhaps a little biased, it goes without saying that Glen Garioch Distillery is a real favorite within the company. It is located in the sleepy town of Old Meldrum in the Highland region. Backed by real substance, its single malt is that rich malty/smoky combination that hits it home every time. Thick, sweet, lively, luscious… we need not say more.
Worth noting is that through change of ownership during the mid 1990s, use of peat in production was ceased, meaning that vintages after 1995 are unpeated and display a delicate character. We hear there’s the odd peated run these days, so let’s see how that develops. Get the older expressions while they last!
Alex Murray Bunnahabhain 28yr...$299.99 / 750ml
Truly a sight to behold is the way Bunnahabhain sits undaunted by its austere surroundings. The distillery faces the sound of Islay just up the coast from Port Askaig, where the sea batters against the rocks with picturesque severity. The harshness of the scene carries a contradictory beauty.
What’s also curious is how a distillery, subjected so severely to the ferocious elements of the Atlantic, can create such a delicate whisky with fantastic balance and subtlety amongst an infamously ‘rowdy’ group of nearby peers.
Bunnahabhain, although subject to alterations during changes of ownership, has maintained a very subtle style of whisky through the years. While her neighbors adopt the use of peat, there is none to be found in older vintages of Bunnahabhain. Instead, gentle salty, nutty and fruity traits are found.
Today the distillery, during certain weeks of the year, does make heavily-peated whisky which gives completely different delight to the palate.
Like a handful of others, Bunnahabhain is a distillery whose whisky shines during both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask maturation, developing vastly different characters along the way.

Grande Champagne VSOP Subtil…$64.99/750ml

Bastille 1789 French Single Malt Whiskey...$59.99 / 750ml

Yeast: A cultured yeast whose strain is 120 years old.
Distillation: Distilled twice in Charente copper stills.
Water: From the purest Charente springs, naturally filtered for centuries through the limestone layers in the soil of the region.
Ageing: Limousin oak barrels which had previously held Sauternes, Red Burgundy, and Sherry.
Tasting notes: With a deep amber color, BASTILLE 1789 Single Malt proves to be a soft, rich, and complex whisky. It presents complex notes of fruit, sweet spices, and leather, ending with a slightly peaty finish. It reveals layers of character brought about by the triple cask ageing.

Toppling Goliath Celestial Paradox

Toppling Goliath Celestial Paradox DIPA...$17.99 / 4pk 16oz cans
a Collaboration with Lua Brewing
Lua Brewing & Sapwood Cellars Brewery visited us at Toppling Goliath to go on a mission, venturing into uncharted territory by exploring previously unrecognized & underutilized aromatic compounds naturally occurring in hops. Harnessing the power of these compounds, we were able to achieve aromatic notes of bright, tropical passionfruit, orange, & grapefruit while still maintaining the fine line of balance. It was quite the paradoxical challenge, but as they say, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Join us on a journey into another universe of flavor!
Double India Pale Ale:

Simcoe, Strata, Citra & Galaxy Hops

Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher Now in Cans!

Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher...$8.99 / 6pk cans
AN IPA-INSPIRED BEVERAGE
0 ABV
0 Calories
0 Carbs

Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher is a fresh take on an old tradition ... An IPA-inspired refreshment that's zero-alcohol, zero-carbohydrate, and zero-calorie, made using everything we know about hops. It's chock-full of Citra, Equinox, and Centennial hops, as well as some natural flavors and a pinch brewer's yeast to biotransform-ate the hops to just the right flavor.
What is biotransformation? Brewmonster Jeremy Marshall put it best: “Yeast biotransforms the existing hop terpenes into more desirable terpenes. You need yeast to liberate the hop flavors, and that’s the most important thing that we know from making IPAs, and we leveraged it in making Hoppy Refresher.” Whatever that means…
So what about Hoppy Refresher? Jeremy Marshall describes it as “refreshing on its own… it fills that ‘Oh, I want to have an IPA, but it’s 9:30 in the morning and I’m out of IPAs’ kind of thing.”
Try Hoppy Refresher on its own for a beer-like tasting experience (without the alcohol, of course), or mix it with your favorite spirit to add a hoppy zing to your cocktail game! Jeremy says, “Think of it like a club soda… with soul. Lots of soul. Like Rick James and James Brown. Rick Brown.”
It's a variation on a theme of 25 years of edgy brewing at the edge of brewing. Cheers!

The Sixth Glass American Malt Whiskey

Very limited!
The Sixth Glass American Malt Whiskey...$59.99 / 750ml
100 proof American Malt Whiskey!
“Do you know what dwells in a glass” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s Ole, the Tower-keeper.  “You see, the first glass, that’s the glass of health, and in that the herb of health is found growing.” Says Ole as he speaks of the toasts on New Years Eve, and tells the story of the glasses. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass…Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Anderson wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. The Sixth Glass, our distinctive take on a classic Belgian quadrupel ale is also meant for the mature connoisseur. It is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied with a deceptive sweetness.
While we are unsure if Ole spoke of beer, wine or spirits, we have taken upon ourselves to turn up the heat on our own Sixth Glass, by making it into the star of our second collaboration with Foundry Distilling Co.  The Sixth Glass American Malt Whiskey is the latest in our Brewer/Distiller Alliance. Made from the mash bill of our Belgian-style quadrupel ale.  “Boulevard’s unique, great tasting beers inspire us to get creative in the distilling world,” said Scott Bush, owner of Foundry Distilling Co. “The final version of the Sixth Glass whiskey is bold at 100 proof, softened by the pronounced candy flavor and aroma which came from The Sixth Glass wort (unfermented beer base) used in its creation.”

Mayacamas Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Mayacamas Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon...$149.98
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty rich, bombastic wine, especially for Mayacamas. A blast of dark fruit, incense, tobacco, licorice, spice and mocha hits the palate. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle to settle down, as it is quite the powerhouse today. This is an unusually flamboyant wine with plenty of richness and a bit less in the way of subtlety. The opulence of the vintage comes through loud and clear.
Rated 97/100 Vinous Media
Loaded with character and energy, this version reveals heavy notes of zesty sweet bay leaf and sassafras that infuse a core of steeped red currant and mulberry fruit, all carried by bright acidity and iron-laced tannins. The long finish pulls everything together, with the fruit, savory and mineral elements in harmony. Showing an old-school touch, this has a long life ahead. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,000 cases made.
Rated 96/100 The Wine Spectator
Moving to the current releases, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly on another level. Cassis, violets, spring flowers, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, fine, polished tannins, fabulous balance, and a great finish. This stunning bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon will drink nicely over the coming 30 years or more.
Rated 96/100 Jeb Dunnuck

Ex-red wine casks that were sourced from Israel’s finest wineries were picked for this part of the Elements trilogy. The Mediterranean’s climate, variety of soil types, hot sunny days and cool nights bring a spicy and unique flavor to Israeli wine – and in turn, our casks. The wine casks used in the Elements Red Wine are a celebration of local terroir, curating a floral single malt with notes of raisins.
Gouden Carolus Single Malt Whisky (Belgium) 46% abv...$56.99
Gouden Carolus Single Malt is a refined whisky distilled from the mash of Gouden Carolus Tripel beer. Originally brewed for the Knights of the Golden Fleece in 1491, this pleasant golden blond beer is preferred by all who love heavier, somewhat seasoned, full-bodied, and refreshing beer. A first for Belgium are the hand hammered, copper pot stills, in which the pure mash is distilled. The result is a pure and clear distillate. The ensuing aging in First Fill Bourbon casks followed by a further aging in ‘Anker’ casks (oak casks reworked by the cooper according to Het Anker’s own specifications) results in a refined whisky with a rich and balanced taste. The subtle fruit aromas are delightfully enhanced by hints of wood and vanilla.
GlenAllachie Speyside 12 Year Single Malt Scotch Port Wood Finish...$109.99
This gorgeous ruby red malt has been matured for over nine years in American Oak Barrels. It was then re-racked into Ruby Port Wood Pipes. Delord Vintage Armagnac

Delord Bas-Armagnac
Born in 1875, Prosper Delord started the company as an itinerant distiller. He gained a reputation for his dedication and expertise by carting his traveling pot still around to the farms in the Bas Armagnac region. When his son Gaston took over in 1925 he officially founded the company name and established the business as a permanent site in Lannepax.  Today, great grandsons Jerome and Sylvain carry on the same tradition, having established a reputation for quality that is unsurpassed. Owners of a prime 30 hectare vineyard in the heart of the Bas Armagnac, (widely known as the 1st Cru), they have been distilling, ageing and blending their eaux-de-vie the exact same way their great-grandfather did. Their ageing cellars contain Armagnacs dating back to 1904.

Technical information:
  • Use of high quality fruit, harvested from the best sandy soils of the Bas Armagnac.
  • No use of pesticides or fertilizers
  • A particularly slow single distillation process.
  • A distillation at low temperature (around 52 to 58 degrees), which enables more flavors, fatty acids and character to remain in the spirit.
  • Use of 10% Gascon oak to give good tannins, darker color and beautiful spices.
  • More ageing than required by law.
Grape varietals:
  • 57% Ugni blanc (gives a good foundation)
  • 16% Colombard (herbal aromas)
  • 15% Folle Blanche (floral notes)
  • 12% Baco (gives roundness)
