2018 Carter Cellars

2018 Carter Cellars
The wines from Carter Cellars have been some of my absolute favorites from Napa Valley over the past 4 vintages. We have been eagerly awaiting the release of the 2018’s for some time now. Thankfully the wait is now over-Aaron Zwicker
"The new 2018 releases from Carter Cellars and this is one stacked lineup of brilliant Cabernet from the team of Mark Carter and winemaker Mike Smith.”-Jeb Dunnuck

2018 Carter Cellars “Carter Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon $159.99
A killer effort, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Carter offers that rare, magical mix of opulence, power, elegant, and freshness that you rarely come across, offering a kaleidoscope-like array of crème de cassis, toasted spice, dried violets, blackberries, smoked tobacco, and a distinct sense of minerality, it’s a beast of a wine on the palate that somehow stays beautifully balanced, elegant, and seamless. It’s impossible to resist today yet should cruise for two decades.
Rated 99/100 Jeb Dunnuck

2018 Carter Cellars “La Bam” Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet $179.99
From the same site, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard La Bam is nevertheless a different beast, showing a touch more elegance as well as polish in its tannins. Dense purple/plum-hued, it delivers rock star notes of blackcurrants, mulberries, plums, Asian spices, chocolate, and violets. Full-bodied and uber-concentrated, it still stays fresh and lively on the palate, with notable freshness, the elegant, seamless style that is the hallmark of this site, and a finish that won’t quit. It will probably merit a triple-digit rating in 3-5 years and keep for 30 years.
Rated 99/100 Jeb Dunnuck

2018 Carter Cellars Weitz Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon...$152.99
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard comes from a site in the northern part of the valley and more red, volcanic soils. It reminds me of the 2016 with its iron/iodine-like character as well as beautiful mulled red and black fruits, Asian spices, chocolate, and loamy earthy aromas and flavors. This big, rich, opulent beauty has sweet tannins, a rocking mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s already impossible to resist yet has two decades of longevity ahead of it.
Rated 96/100 Jeb Dunnuck
The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard rocks up with ready-for-business scents of stewed plums, blackberry preserves, ripe blackcurrants and kirsch plus suggestions of bay leaves, pencil shavings and iron ore. Full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves layers with a black pepper and herbs undercurrent and sturdy frame of grainy tannins, finishing with an earthy lift.
Rated 94/100 Wine Advocate

2018 Carter Cellars Fortuna Vineyard...$112.99
One of the more forward wines in the lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard sports a deep purple hue as well a big bouquet of ripe plums, Asian spices, leafy herbs, and a touch of flowers. Full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and silky on the palate, it delivers plenty of richness and depth yet has a terrific weightless style. It picks up more structure with time in the glass, so don’t let its upfront charm fool you, it’s going to keep for 15+ years.
Rated 95/100 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color and a gorgeous perfume of red roses, Ceylon tea and lavender over a core of cassis, blackberry pie and boysenberries plus hints of unsmoked cigars, fragrant earth and bouquet garni. Full-bodied, the palate shimmers with beautiful energy and freshness, featuring crunchy black and blue fruits and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and savory.

Off Color Brewing Chicxulub

Off Color Brewing Chicxulub
Chicxulub is a small batch variant of Dinosmores aged with an abundance of cocoa nibs, vanilla beans and Guajillo, Ancho, and Cayenne peppers. Dazzling notes of Mexican Hot Chocolate, brownie batter, and toffee with a brief scorch of heat.

Capture Innovant Red Wine

2015 Capture Innovant Red Wine...$34.99
Compare to $49.99 at Wine.com

Ripe, sexy, and voluptuous, the 2015 Innovant Red Wine is the entry-level blend from the estate based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot brought up in 50% new French oak. Crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, lead pencil and spice notes give way to a medium to full-bodied wine that has sweet, rounded tannin, plenty of fruit, and a good finish.
Rated 91/100 Jeb Dunnuck
Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, the 2015 Red Wine Innovant has a deep garnet-purple color with a nose of ripe plums, crushed black currants and black berries with touches of bay leaves and menthol. Medium-bodied, tightly knit and with a firm structure of grainy tannins and electric freshness, it finishes on a lovely mineral note. 781 cases produced.
Rated 90/100 The Wine Advocate

2013 Capture Harmonie Red Wine...$34.99
Lowest price on Wine Searcher is $59.99
One of the gems in this report is the 2013 Harmonie Red Wine (85% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon). Sourced almost all from the Alexander Mountain Estate and aged in 20% new French oak, its singular purple color is followed by an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis, black cherries, damp earth, and spring flowers. This sensational red hits the palate with a huge, opulent texture, perfect balance, and ultra-fine tannin. Count me impressed by this quintessential expression of Cabernet Franc from Sonoma. It’s straight up awesome today yet is going to keep for two decades or more.

# 6 Whiskey of the year!

Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Year Single Malt Scotch...$41.99
Compare to $45.99 at Total Wine and More
Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the latest permanent expression to join the Distillery’s Ultimate Range. At just five years old, Wee Beastie is a feisty young creature with a formidable taste.

SOMETHING BIG AND SMOKY…

Our whisky creators set out to make the rawest, smokiest Ardbeg ever. The result is Ardbeg Wee Beastie and this tongue-tingling, beautifully smoky dram is the youngest Ardbeg we’ve ever made.

On the snout, intense aromas of cracked blacked pepper mingle with sappy pine resin and a sharp tang of smoke. Suddenly, an explosive mouthfeel bursts forth with chocolate, creosote and tar. Savoury meats sink into the palate before the long salty mouthcoating finish slinks away… revealing the inner beast of this Islay icon.

Young and intensely smoky, this is a dram untamed by age. Matured in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, Wee Beastie is perfect for enjoying neat or as the mouth-watering main ingredient in a powerfully smoky cocktail.

Non chill-filtered at 47.4%.

Grower Champagne "RM" Récoltant-Manipulant

The grapes for this wine are all sustainably farmed. Joël is one of only a few producers to use a soléra system for his vin de reserve each vintage. As he pulls out wine from his vin de reserve, he adds a little wine back to his soléra. Currently it is a 12 year old soléra, which significantly adds to the depth and complexity of his Champagnes. Each vintage he blends 30% wine from the solera, with the current vintage. The “Parcelles” cuvée spends 42 months on the lees before disgorgement. Joël bottles his wine with a low, 9 grams per liter, dosage. Annual production only 1,660 cases

2019 Comte de Langeron Cotes du Rhone Linteau...$16.99
70% Grenache and 30% Syrah
We love Rhones wines. We are always looking out for new and exciting Cotes du Rhone as they represents some of the best values in red wine. They are also great food wines too.
The medium bodied 2019 Cotes du Rhone shows notes of black olives and Mediterranean herbs, but also shows plenty of fleshy black raspberry fruit. It us a blend of 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah. Concentrated but supple, it's round and expansive in the mouth, finishing with a subtle dusting of ripe tannins and hints of coffee.

2018 Le Grand Valmal Cotes du Rhone Generation....$13.99
80% Grenache and 20% Syrah
This is a very impressive Cotes du Rhone. It has everything you want it a great value Cotes du Rhone. It has an opaque purple color with a big nose that almost smells like a Northern Rhone. Large amounts of dark fruits like blackberry, black cherry, cassis and a great density and very full bodied for this price.

2018 Le Grand Valmal Cotes du Rhone Villages Vieilles Vignes...$17.99
60% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre
This Rhone is the real deal and a sensational value! Could easily be confused for a Chateauneuf do Pape
Floral notes accent fresh mixed berries in this 2017 Cotes du Rhone Villages that is made from Old Vine Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. The Syrah dominates and leads to a full-bodied wine but with silky tannins. It has a slight pepperiness to add some dimension and complexity. This wine is produced by the third generation on this estate and it is a fruit driven Cotes du Rhone with great roundness and complexity.

2018 Domaine de Servans Cotes du Rhone....$13.99
Vines average 40 years in age. The grapes are harvested by hand with a hand triage to select only the best quality grapes.
The Graniers decided to continue to increase the percentage of Syrah in their blend. This increase has given the wine added depth and concentration, without sacrificing balance in the wine. In the mouth, rich blackberry notes give way to red cherry and black pepper spice. Even with the increased percentage of Syrah, the tannins are very supple and round in the finish. This is a classic example of a Côtes du Rhône, ideal for backyard barbeque, burgers on the grill, or even pizza

2017 Roche Audran Cotes du Rhone...$16.99
Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah

The Grenache vines range from 55 to 100 years old. The Carignan vines are 82 years old, while his Syrah vines range from 30 to 50 years old. This in an unusually rich and complex Côtes du Rhône. Each year Vincent has incrementally increased the percentage of Grenache in his Côtes du Rhône. This year the wine is now 70% Grenache. This blend further accentuates the bright red cherry fruit in the wine. His old vine Carignan adds a complex peppery spice component, while the adds rich black fruit flavors.

2016 Roche Audran Cotes du Rhone Villages Cesar...$24.99
100% Grenache

The vines for the César range from 55 to 100 years old, and grow in very complex soil formed by the same geological upheavals that created the Alps. The grapes are hand-picked by parcel, with very low (25-35 hectoliters per hectare) yields. Though the Cuvée Cesar falls under the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, it is a wine that outshines many wines with a more prestigious pedigree. His very old Grenache vines produce a wine packed with black raspberry, black pepper, with hints of cassis fruit, all supported by firm ripe tannins. In the nose plum, red and black cherry, and garrigue spices mingle together. While the “Cuvée César” is a relatively lush and generous wine, it is also a wine built for the long term. So drink it now with a nice steak au poivre, or wait a few years and try it with venison or duck breast.

Pappy and Co. Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup...$32.99
Our maple syrup is sweeter than Southern hospitality.
Our great grandfather, Pappy Van Winkle taught us that to make the best, you use the best. That's why we grew up using real maple syrup on (and in) our favorite dishes.

When we decided to make our own, we wanted to find a partner that shared our love of hand-crafted, high quality products. We found a perfect match in Bissel Maple Farm. The result is a perfect marriage of craftsmanship and flavor.

Together, we've made a one-of-a-kind syrup bursting with flavors of vanilla, butter, oak and, of course, bourbon. Aged in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels, use it in your favorite recipes, as a finishing syrup or even in your favorite cocktails. Just be sure to save a little for those Sunday morning pancakes.

Pappy & Co. Barrel Aged Pepper Sauce...$12.99
Aged in Pappy Van Winkle Barrels
Recently nominated as a finalist for the 2019 Good Food Awards!
It's high noon on a hot, Southern summer day. The sun shining brightly from cloudless sky, the humidity as thick as honey. It's a purifying heat; the kind that makes you feel like you've accomplished something just by being brave enough to weather it.

We've taken that heat and bottled it.

In partnership with another family owned business (and our friends), Midland Ghost, we've created an exclusive hot sauce. Made with their famous, locally grown, first generation Ghost Peppers and aged in our Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels for a rich, smoky, oaky heat. We mellow out the heat of the ghost peppers by adding some mild red peppers to the mix. The result is the perfect blend that makes this a smoky pepper sauce you can add a dash to just about anything from meats and vegetables to Bloody Mary cocktails.

Go beyond the grill, and discover all of the culinary fun you can have with our hot sauce.

Compass Box Peat Monster

#9 Whiskey of the Year by the Whisky Advocate
Compass Box Peat Monster....$61.99
Compare to $63.99 at Total Wine and More
The much-beloved Peat Monster was recently given a new recipe designed to create greater depth and elegance. The peat influence, while still omnipresent, is now more subtle. On the nose it’s gentle and fragrant, wafting over candied citrus, lemon-frosted cake, and raspberry, along with classic peated undertones of charcoal and iodine. The palate is creamy in texture, with pleasant notes of brine, seashells, ashiness, and a floral peat influence that swirls gently around rich vanilla, tropical hints of lime, smoked meats, and generous spice. The finish offers bitter chocolate, lemon hard candy, and a bang of spice and smoke. —David Fleming

One of the best and we only have about 18 bottles left!

2019 La Bargemone Cuvee Marina Coteaux d'Aix en Provence...$34.99
Provence Rose Cuvee Marina is light to medium-bodied on the palate, with a fine, crisply defined backbone of acidity and a long, focused finish. Leafy notes, citrus zest, faint hints of red berries and notes of grapefruit and pineapple provide plenty of flavor interest, yet they never seem overly fruity, firmly grounded by savory brine and stone. This year, the blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% each Grenache and Syra

Tolaini Legit Cabernet Sauvignon

This is starting to mellow but still has years of life ahead. Drink now through 2036. 15,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. — BS
Rated 94/100 The Wine Spectator
#26 on The Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of the Year 2019

You must try the first ever release of Tolaini's 100% Cabernet from the heart of Chianti! Usually this juice is blended in to Tolaini's flagship wine "Valdisanti" (a perennial 90+ pointer in its own right), but in 2013 proprietor Lia Tolaini Banville thought the Cabernet was profound enough to stand on its own. She was struck by the grace and opulence of the wine in barrel, and after bottling it rested at the winery for five years, allowing it to drink well upon release. Jazz great Thelonius Monk is on the label because like the wine, he was stylish, unique, and a little irreverent.

"LEGIT is a wine of power and finesse, an organically-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon made from hand-picked grapes grown in the prized San Giovanni Vineyard in the heart of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Here the gently sloping Tuscan vineyard and its gnarled vines mimic the angular melodies and dissonant twists of Monk's great masterpieces. "A wine born of soul and depth", a harmonious and unlikely marriage of American Jazz and Italian tradition that is as perfectly irreverent, as stylishly 'LEGIT' as the artist who inspired it."--Winery Notes
