J. Lohr

2021 J. Lohr Chardonnay Arroyo Seco....$12.99
The 35th vintage of this beloved wine showcases how cool-climate Monterey specifically Arroyo Seco packs charm, elegance, texture, and balance into Chardonnay. Of course, the talented hands of winemaker Kristen Barnhisel had an impact. as malolactic fermentation and sur lie aging have added to the wine's innate richness. Striking scents of lemon meringue, creamed corn, and yellow flowers emerge effortlessly. Acidity waves its wand on the palate, lending crystal-clear focus and casting a textural spell with mouthwatering notes of summer peach, lime, and kiwi. The finish of candied yam and mandarin orange peel is exotic.

Special Weekend Tasting Hakata Japanese Whisky

Special Weekend Tasting
Hakata Japanese Whisky
At the (In)famous Bar
Inside the Clayton Wine and Cheese Place
7435 Forsyth Blvd.
Friday, March 1st 3:30pm-6:30pm
Saturday, March 2nd Noon-6:00 pm

Hakata Whisky is distilled and matured in Fukuoka, Japan by the Hikari Distillery (which was founded in 1912). The mash of the whisky is 100% barley. A fraction of this barley has been fermented with Koji providing healthy enzymes for fermentation and creating the highly sought after and delicious, savory taste known as Umami.
The Sherry casks this whisky is aged in are kept in traditional style warehouses as well as a few open-air warehouses where they are exposed to humid summertime temperatures of 95 °F and winter temperatures of around 38 °F. As a result, the whisky is bold and almost classical in flavor; retaining a freshness that is truly unique.
Hakata 10 Year Japanese Single Malt Sherry Cask 42% abv
nitially, there are dark sherry notes of plum, black cherry, and soy sauce, with a lift of gentle spices, then it evolves, adding caramel- ized roasted garlic, lemongrass, ginger, and concentrated notes of aged balsamic vinegar. A burst of browned butter on the palate, followed by nutty flavors, with ripe plum, damson, a dash of balsamic, clove, pepper, melted chocolate, and a mouth-filling finish of powdery cocoa.
93 Points, Whiskey Advocate

Hakata 12 Year Japanese Single Malt Sherry Cask 42% abv
Fleeting vegetal aromas of bok choy, with ground ginger, coffee bean, and marron glacé. The umami is strong on this one, but there’s balance on the nose from black forest gateau notes and a hint of oak astringency. Raisin and black cherry flavors draw on a deep pool of umami notes, with soy sauce, shredded ginger, balsamic vinegar, plain chocolate, and a growing presence of oak tannins.
95 Points, Whiskey Advocate

Hakata 16 Year Japanese Single Malt Sherry Cask 42% abv
A spectacular drink that opens with aromas of Seville orange marmalade, milk chocolate, ground pepper, barley, and soft rounded oak, with an underlying dryness from the sherry. The umami notes are there, but are more integrated than other Hakata. An oily texture bursting with bitter plain chocolate, citrus oil, fresh walnut, black cherry, pepper, and ground ginger, develops an underlying creaminess and serves up a hazelnut finish.
96 Points, Whiskey Advocate

Hakata 18 Year Japanese Single Malt Sherry Cask 42% abv
An intensity of aromas with chocolate brownie, black currant cassis, wood spices, dark soy sauce, and worn leather; some lemongrass and spring onion freshness, the umami and oak notes reach equilibrium. Dark sticky sherry notes on the palate, with raisin, leather, dried fig, prune, and dark chocolate, spinning away with an umami phase before the sherry notes become dry and mouth- drawing. The finish is long, with leather and walnut oil.

Aged 10 Years
Barreled 2012 - Bottled 2023
121 proof
Here you have the oldest of all Beam family whiskeys. Established in 1810 by the upright, forward-thinking Abraham Overholt, his namesake whiskey is recognized today as the oldest enduring American Rye in the United States. Made and sold without interruption, this whiskey has seen a thing or two over the centuries. Bottled with a commitment to quality exemplified by an assertive Rye taste, Overholt is a powerful ally to bartenders who prefer it for their cocktails. At one time, it was the most popular spirit in the country. One the Beam family took note of and vowed to continue distilling the way Abraham wanted: proudly true to its industrious spirit.

Buzzard's Roost

All Buzzard's Roost whiskeys are double barreled and at least 105 proof

We bought the last 18 bottles of the Cigar - we are told this will be it
Buzzard Roost Cigar Straight Rye Whiskey....$64.99
105 Proof
The whiskey in this barrel has rested in brand new, lightly charred oak barrels that have been toasted and then very lightly smoked with Kentucky aged cigar tobacco. Sit back, relax, and roost awhile. We hope you'll enjoy this expression of Buzzard's Roost.

From the get-go, their idea for a brand would be entirely centered around double-barrel maturation. That means that every product they put out would see time in a second barrel. To accomplish this, the duo worked with Independent Stave Company (ISC) determining which profiles they liked the best.....Almost all of the secondary barrels that Buzzard’s Roost uses are either toasted or are given a level #1 char (which is the lightest char available). But this particular release of “Cigar Rye” uses a unique process that I don’t believe anyone else has copied. The secondary barrel receives a toasting treatment followed by a quick char and then is “cold smoked” with actual cigar tobacco leaves grown in Kentucky to achieve a wild new flavor profile. -- Bourbon Culture

Delord Bas Armagnac

Delord Bas Armagnac XO...$56.99 / 750ml
This exceptional XO displays a masterful balance of ripe fruit, wood and buttery orange pound cake. Smooth and deep with a wealth of rancio.
Min. 15 years old.

Reviews

96 points: "Look for rich flavors and dark spices: toffee, burnt caramel, dark-roast coffee, deeply toasted gingerbread embellished with clove and black pepper. The notably long sweet-and spiced finish will not quit." (Wine Enthusiast, 2021)

4 stars. Highly Recommended: "Sandy brown / topaz color; immaculately clean. I like this opening aroma as I encounter floral / garden-like scents of jasmine, honeysuckle, and green vegetation, along with latent orchard fruit aromas; after more aeration, the bouquet turns a bit like textile fibers, linen, and cotton fiber before turning mildly nut-like. Entry is engagingly sweet, caramel-like, brown sugar-like, and chewy in texture; at midpalate, more fruit aspects emerge in the forms of black raisins, prunes, and dates. Concludes appealingly long in the throat, moderately lush in texture, medium oily, and peppery. The progressive nature of the innate quality of the Bas-Armagnac is obvious, in particular, from entry to the alluring finish." (Paul Pacult, The New Kindred Spirits 2021))

96 points: "Light copper in color, but rich and unctuous in the mouth, with a long velvety finish. Delord XO is a dense and complex 15-year-old with scents of wildflowers and spring herbs, flavors of orange zest, fig, nougat, and a gorgeous, lengthy crème brûlée finish. Excellent value that could convince a committed Bourbon drinker to embrace French brandy." (Vinous, Jul 2018)

This superb blend displays flavors or cocoa, spices, vanilla, raisins, walnut and cinnamon. Its finish is long, silky and biscuity. 25 years old.

Reviews

97 points.
"Vanilla bean and allspice aromas entice on the nose. The bold, complex palate opens with oak and caramel brushed with toffee and espresso, finishing with a grip of tannins and plum skin dryness. Walnut and clove frame the exit." (Wine Enthusiast, 2021)

5 stars, Highest Recommendation.
"Mahogany color; superb clarity. I get buttery notes upfront that give way to bigger fragrances of citrus peel, meringue, egg white, and black tea; secondary inhalations after more aeration discover subtle notes of lime / citrus, black tea, and white raisins. Entry is sensationally clean, zesty, and defined by the notable presence of citrus rind, white raisins, kiwi, nutmeg, clove, and oak nuances; midpalate continues the subtlety found in the entry stage as the quiet merging of the fruit, acid, baking spice, and fatty oak elements creates a sophisticated and integrated core flavor that's about as sublime as mature Bas-Armagnac can get. The finish is a savory masterpiece of grape brandy balance, subtle strength, and integration. . This bas-armagnac could have no other score but five stars.” (Paul Pacult. The New Kindred Spirits 2021)
Chairman's Trophy, 97 points.
"Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation" (Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2020)

Gold medal (Talents d'Armagnac, 2017-2018)

97 points
"Delord’s 25-year-old is surely deep and complex, but it surprises with its vibrance and freshness. Perky, patisserie aromas of pineapple cake, candied ginger, and orangette entice, then give way to darker notes on the palate of chocolate, coffee, and hints of rancio, culminating in a rich finish of walnut, membrillo, and cheese that lingers for what seems like hours." (Vinous Jul. 2108)
"This is the ultimate hand-crafted spirit." (May Matta-Aliah of In The Grape)

96 points. (Wine Enthusiast, 2012)

Far North Solveig Gin

Far North Solveig Gin...$33.99 / 750ml
Lush and verdant, like the fragrant prairie in early June after it rains.
87 PROOF
TASTING NOTES | Offering a nose of citrus, pine cones and a hint of lavender, Solveig combines a creamy entry with an almost ethereal lightness on the palate. Complex and concentrated in the glass after twenty-four hours of air, the gin shows exceptional balance in the mid-palate, with added flavors of thyme and coriander.

89 POINTS – WINE ENTHUSIAST
The Scandinavian woman’s name Solveig (we pronounce it SOUL-vy, with a silent “g”) has deep Nordic roots, combining the elements “sol” sun and “veig” strength. We love both the history and the sound of Solveig – soulful, strong and bright. Just like our gin.
It’s soft, ethereal, and lightly floral with citrus notes – a gin for people who don’t think they like gin.

Glenfiddich 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch...$1,299.99 / 700ml
Time is often believed to be an irrefutable force. The seconds, minutes, hours fleeting figures of a clockface, slipping steadily away. But in the hands of a maverick, time stands still. This is something our malt master understands implicitly. Thirty years ago, he laid down the spirit to create an exemplary single malt. After three decades of patient maturation, the decisive moment arrived. Glenfiddich 30 is the pinnacle of this process. More than simply a superlative liquid, it is forethought, expectation, anticipation embodied. Three decades, captured. Time stilled, forever. Arrested, and arresting. An experience to savour. Thirty years of our maverick mindset, suspended in time.
