Whisky Advocate #1 Whiskey of the Year 2023!

A little in stock of last year's #1 Whiskey in stock!
2023 Whiskey of the Year!!

Glenglassaugh Sandend Single Malt Scotch....$69.99
Our annual Top 20 Whiskies list is always filled with A-list names, along with a few lesser-knowns that make the grade. But it’s unusual for one of the latter to outshine the entire field, yet that’s precisely what happened this year, as Whisky Advocate’s panelists plucked a relative unknown from a group of big-name contenders. As we tasted, little did we know there was an upset in the making. Winning in a nearly unanimous vote, single malt scotch Glenglassaugh Sandend became our 2023 Whisky of the Year.

Glenglassaugh Distillery is situated on the north coast of Scotland, perched upon high ground overlooking the North Sea. The whisky is often described as a “coastal” Highland malt, which seems a fair assessment. This non-age statement expression, named for the bay offshore, is bright and delicate, with aromas of citrus and minerality leading to a luscious palate filled with layers of flavor revealing peach, apricot, honey, pound cake, and vanilla, all accented with a touch of sea salt. Rolling spices help create an explosive, long-lasting finish. It’s gentle yet complex, but above all it’s an easy sipper you can just sit back and enjoy. And at $70, it represents pretty fair value for a single malt scotch.

Why is Glenglassaugh so little known? Primarily because it has spent more time being closed than open in its nearly 150-year history. Founded in 1875, it was shuttered in 1907 for 53 years. It then reopened only for brief periods before closing in 1986, this time seemingly for good. But in 2008 Glenglassaugh was purchased by an investor group that restarted production, and it subsequently was acquired by Jack Daniel’s owner Brown-Forman in 2016. It still hadn’t been heard from much until recently, because stocks needed replenishing. But now Glenglassaugh is ready to roll, and judging by this stellar release, patience is being rewarded in spades. —David Fleming

2009 Dom Pérignon Brut Rosé Champagne

Champagne, France
The most iconic Champagne is Dom Pérignon. Its status as a symbol of luxury, celebration, and quality has made it a global icon. Dom Pérignon Rosé elevates the prestige of the Dom Pérignon brand to an even higher level. It is considered one of the finest and most iconic rosé Champagnes in the world.

2009 Dom Pérignon Brut Rosé Champagne...$533.99 / 750ml
A lovely rosé Champagne that waltzes gracefully across the palate, belying the concentrated range of macerated raspberry and strawberry, candied blood orange peel, toast and saffron notes carried on the elegant, satiny mousse. Long and fresh, with minerally smoke and oyster shell accents on the focused finish. Drink now through 2035.
Rated 96/100 The Wine Spectator
Peaches, fresh crushed strawberries and roses on the nose. Full-bodied and generous. Fine tannins that frame the wine beautifully and set it up for a fresh finish. Some fruit tea and cedar undertones. Enticing finish with hints of bitterness. Savory. Drink or hold.
Rated 97/100 James Suckling
In comparison to the charming, pure 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé, the 2009 Dom Pérignon Rosé possesses a ripe, dense bouquet with aromas of dark berries, licorice, dried white flowers, toast and pastry, enhanced by delicate, racy smoky hints. Full-bodied, broad and rich, it’s dense and phenolic due to the approximately 15% still red wine sourced from grapes planted in the villages of Hautvilliers, Aÿ and Bouzy, culminating in a protracted, sapid and chalky finish. Although already thoroughly enjoyable, it should age well over the next 10 years. This blend of 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay was disgorged in March 2022 with a dosage of five grams per liter.

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port Collection....$849.99 / 3pk 750ml bottles
Includes 3-750ml bottles in a wood box -

1985 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port
(almost 40 years old now)
A very youthful deep garnet core with ruby rim. This has a much more precocious nose than the -83 with ripe blackberry, raspberry coulis, black olives and a certain minerality to it. Very fresh and well defined, the palate is full-bodied, certainly more structured and complex than the previous two declarations. Notes of black cherry, fig, raisin with a hint of savoury fruit towards the finish that has great length and refinement. Still in its youth, this has great potential and might be over-shadowed by the ensuing two vintages. Tasted November 2007.
Rated 95/100 The Wine Advocate
Medium ruby. Beautiful aromas of flowers and fresh plum, with hints of stems. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with gorgeous silky tannins and a long, long finish. This is just starting to come around and offers wonderful flavors. Long life ahead, but ready to try. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Drink now.
Rated 93/100 The Wine Spectator

1994 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port - Perfect 100 points!
#1 Wine of the Year 1997 The Wine Spectator
In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it's better than either the '92 or the '70, though it's very like the '70 in structure. Best after 2010. 10,000 cases made.
Rated 100/100 The Wine Spectator

2003 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port

This is really hitting its stride now, with a furl of caressing black currant and plum reduction flavors leading the way, flanked by singed alder, walnut, ganache and sweet tobacco notes. Offers nice underlying tension too, thanks to fresh acidity that ripples throughout. The long finish shows terrific drive. Mouthwatering and hard to lay off now, but this still has room to grow. Drink now through 2045. 13,000 cases made, 300 cases imported.

2022 Jos. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett

Germany
The Joh. Jos. Prüm (J.J. Prüm) winery, located in Germany's Mosel region, is one of the most revered names in the world of Riesling
2022 Jos. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett...$73.99
Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
Rated 96/100 James Suckling
This vibrantly peachy, salt-licked kabinett requires just a few minutes of aeration to peel back the layers of smoke and slate that may obscure its fragrant, abundantly fruity style. Just a shade off-dry, it's a piercing, laser-edged sip of cut stone, bracing white peach, and lemon and lime flavours. Lacy in texture but lifted and searing, the finish is harmoniously dry and meanders on veins of salt and gunpowder. A thrilling, complex yet irresistibly youthful wine that's ready now with a decant but sure to reward cellaring as well.

2016 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque with Glasses....$199.99
1 bottle and 2 hand painted glasses

A pale gold, clear and luminous, like the rising sun.
Delicate aromas of fruit – vine peach and poached pear – and linden and hawthorn blossom.
Notes of juicy vine peach lend a fine texture, complemented by poached pear and rhubarb.

Heritage: Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque is the original Belle Époque vintage cuvée, first appearing in 1964. Instantly recognisable throughout the world, its bottle is adorned with the graceful spray of Japanese white anemones created for Maison Perrier-Jouët by Art Nouveau master Emile Gallé in 1902.
For this collaboration with Maison Perrier-Jouët, pollen appeared to me as the perfect symbol to link the elements of nature together. A celebration of life and the meticulous care given to their vineyards, right at the heart of the Champagne region of France.

The Murray McDavid "Mystery Malt" Speyside’s Finest 15-Year

Nose:  Nuts (Candied & spiced), dried pitted fruits
Palate: Candied orange peel, chocolate covered dried fruits (dates, cherries, apricot)
Finish: Long, elegant finish, with cinnamon and other baking spices.

The term "Mystery Malt" in whisky refers to a single malt Scotch whisky whose distillery of origin is intentionally not disclosed. This is done due to a confidentiality agreements between independent bottlers and distilleries.

Pinpointing the distillery behind a "Mystery Malt" like this requires interpreting subtle clues in the whisky's description and tasting notes. The term "Speyside's Finest" suggests a well-regarded distillery in the Speyside region. Based on the details (15 years, Oloroso Sherry maturation, cask strength), a few distilleries come to mind:

If you google it most likely options, these would be your top three candidates: we cannot tell you which one though

  1. Macallan

    • Known for its mastery of sherry cask aging, Macallan produces rich, fruit-forward whiskies with a similar profile. The use of Oloroso Sherry casks aligns with Macallan's signature style.
    • Why it fits: The "finest" description and sherry-focused production suggest it could be Macallan, often featured in independent bottlings under pseudonyms.
  2. Glenfarclas

    • Glenfarclas specializes in sherry-cask maturation and releases with rich, spicy, and fruity profiles. Their long history and independence might make them willing partners for Murray McDavid.
    • Why it fits: The high ABV and cask influence resemble Glenfarclas characteristics.
  3. Glenlivet

    • While more diverse in its cask approach, Glenlivet often has independent bottlings with Oloroso finishes, emphasizing elegance and Speyside's lighter side.
    • Why it fits: A big-name distillery that fits the "finest" branding, though less exclusively sherry-oriented.

Santo Fino Tequila Blanco 110

Tequila Matchmaker blind tasting of Still Strength and this was #1

#1 overall Still Strength
Santo Fino Tequila Blanco 110...$52.99

(55% abv) This famous-duo backed tequila (Sammy Hagar and Guy Fieri don’t like to be called “celebrities”) came in on top thanks to its agave-forward flavor. Tasters also found vegetal notes with pepper, green, olive, and minerals. It is made at the Tequila El Viejito distillery (NOM 1107) in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco.
Bartenders put it in 2nd place, and rated it slightly higher than aficionados, who ranked it in 3rd. But when the scores of those 2 groups were averaged together, it achieved the highest average score of all still strength samples.
“Love the presence of the agave and the intensity in the mid-palate… this is a solid and excellent high-proof tequila,” said one taster. The 2 groups scored them less than 1 point apart, which says a lot because bartenders are a tough crowd. This suggests that it is a high proof crowd pleaser. Traditional production methods are used to create it, including small brick ovens, a roller mill, closed stainless steel fermentation tanks, and a special hybrid copper/stainless steel pot still. Interestingly, Sammy Hagar’s very first batch of Cabo Wabo came from this distillery, and with Santo he gets to return to his roots by working with the same Mexican family that specializes in the creation of high quality, small-batch tequila.
