Ojen is back!!!

Legendre Ojen....$18.99 / 750ml

Ojen, a New Orleans Favorite, Is Back in the Liquor Cabinet
New York Times
Probably more than any city in America, New Orleans loves anise-flavored liqueurs. Yet it’s had a hard time holding on to them.

It had to live without its beloved absinthe for nearly a century until the famously volatile green elixir became available in the United States again in 2007. Now, just in time for Mardi Gras, it has been given back another treasured licorice liquor: Ojen.

This week, Ojen (pronounced OH-hen) returned to New Orleans shelves and glasses for the first time in years, thanks to the Sazerac Company, the locally based liquor business.

“We had a reasonable stash of old bottles of it,” said Mark Brown, the president and chief executive. “We sent our chaps in the lab to research Ojen and then create what they felt was a really good quality Ojen. They were able to benchmark it against the old bottles.” The new product’s full name is Legendre Ojen. A bottle costs about $20.

Ojen has a history almost as romantic as absinthe’s. First produced in the mid-1800s by a Spanish distiller in the small town of Ojen, it developed a rather cultured reputation. Picasso painted a bottle into his “Spanish Still Life.” Hemingway wrote about it in “To Have and Have Not.” And it was lapped up in New Orleans, where it was strongly associated with Mardi Gras. The liqueur was popular enough that it had its own namesake drink, the Ojen cocktail.

When the Spanish source decided to shut down production in the early 1990s, Martin Wine Cellar, a well-known New Orleans shop, panicked. It pleaded for one more run of the juice and got it: 6,000 bottles worth. But the last was sold in 2009.

“For seven years, it was a special find to hold your own bottle of Ojen,” said Chris Hannah, a renowned local bartender who works at Arnaud’s French 75 bar. “When you could get to a bottle, you’d hoard it.” Mr. Hannah has three bottles from the final run, and four from the 1930s.

Mr. Brown expects demand to quickly reach beyond the city. “If we start receiving orders from other states, we would absolutely ship it,” he said. (More Ojen drinking would amount to a win-win for the Sazerac Company: Aside from Ojen, the key ingredient in an Ojen cocktail is Peychaud’s Bitters, also made by Sazerac.)

Mr. Hannah said that having Ojen back would help New Orleans residents “feel more New Orleanian.”

“I personally hope it’ll forgo the Mardi Gras hype and return to brunch drinking etiquette,” he said.

Jolly Pumpkin Weizen Bam

Jolly Pumpkin, Dexter Michigan
Their Summer seasonal

Jolly Pumpkin Weizen Bam....$8.99 / 750ml
Jolly Pumpkin's Weizen Bam Bière is ruddy golden, with yeast driven esters of banana, spicy clove, and nutmeg all wrapped up with a generous dose of rapscillion delight.

Lots of brewers use oak barrels to age their beers these days, but Jolly Pumpkin actually ferments in the wood, and the result is beer of extraordinary complexity and earthiness. Despite the risks of fermenting in oak, however, Ron's beers are nicely balanced and drinkable, and don't seem to suffer from the oxidation and off-flavors so common in aged beer. Jolly Pumpkin ales lean toward a subtle but pleasant lactic sourness that fits perfectly with the wild yeast flavors derived from the wood.

Isaac Asimov wrote, "To succeed, planning alone is insufficient. One must improvise as well."

2014 Daniel Cohn Bellacosa Cabernet Sauvignon...$19.99
We have learned that following Robert Parker on Twitter can be a good thing, thanks for the heads up on 2013 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red which we discovered via Twitter and it ended up getting 97 Points
Robert M Parker on Twitter "Excellent $25 #Cabernet from #Napa—a super value!"
“A cabernet I had last night - Daniel Cohn’s 2014 Bellacosa, a delicious supple, and savory wine that defies the stratospheric Napa pricing game. Check it out!” - ROBERT PARKER
Robert Parker said is was a super value at $25, but it is an even better value at our store as we are offering it at only $19.99

2013 Stags' Leap Winey Cabernet Sauvignon...$35.98
A wine with purity and definition. Ultra-fine tannins hold together a red with subtle berry, walnut, forest floor and mushroom character. Very fine indeed. Better in 2020 but so beautiful now.
Rated 94/100 James Suckling
2012 Hidden Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon...$55.99
2012 Hidden Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 55% Slope...$55.99The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 55 Degrees Slope exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color as well as beautiful, sweet crème de cassis, Asian plum sauce, licorice and forest floor notes. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, and impressive concentration, texture and length, this superb Cabernet can be drunk early in life because of its velvety opulence or cellared for two decades.
Rated 94/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2013 Far Niente Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon $64.98
The 2013 Bella Union presents a luscious nose of ripe black cherry, plum, strawberry, opulent berry compote and cassis. The entry is rich and inviting with succulent flavors reminiscent of cherry pie. The palate builds to trademark Rutherford dust mingled with chewy tannins, offering a mouth-filling, integrated texture, as hints of baking spices linger on a beautiful finish.

2012 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon...$82.99

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which includes 65% Coombsville fruit from John Caldwell’s vineyard and the rest from Howell Mountain, is a big, deep, dramatic Cabernet Sauvignon, much in keeping with the vintage’s character. It is full-bodied and displaying flashy, flamboyant blueberry and blackberry fruit, licorice and background earth and oak, it is voluptuous and ideal for drinking over the next 15 or more years.

Rated 93/100 Wine Advocate

2011 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet...$95.99
Our 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant representation of Napa Valley Cabernet from a cool vintage. It presents an opaque garnet hue in the glass and reveals aromas of sandalwood and roasted meats. Flavors of vanilla, coffee beans and raspberries are buttressed by dusty tannins, firm acidity and a mouth-coating texture. Given proper cellaring, this wine should provide drinking pleasure through 2029.

2007 Soter Finale Cabernet...$139.99
This wine is Tony Soter's last Cabernet, and his last Napa Valley wine! As both a debut and a grand finale, it is a truly special bottling commemorating a 30 year career that involved making many acclaimed wines for exceptional producers, namely: Araujo, Dalla Valle, Etude, Viader, Shafer and Spottswoode. More than a piece of vinous memorabilia, this wine makes a parting statement about what Napa Cabernet can be, what it was and what it has meant to this acknowledged master of the craft. Both the 2007 and 2006 vintages are represented in this bottling, where the blend of both years together simply made for the most compelling wine.
Only 900 cases produced.

2013 Peter Michael Les Pavots..$181.99

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots, which is their proprietary red wine blend from Knights Valley, is a killer effort, and one of their all-time greats, ranking right up there with the 2007 or 1997. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, there are 3,600 cases of it. The wine displays plenty of mocha, chocolate, blackberry, creosote and charcoal in an incredibly complex fragrance. Full-bodied and opulent, it shows, loads of tannin, a hint of unsmoked cigar tobacco and plenty of black and blue fruits. Opaque purple to the rim, this wine is in need of a good 5-6 years of cellaring and certainly has 30-40 years of life in it.
Rated 98+/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2012 Dominus Proprietary Red...$199.99

Flirting with perfection, the 2012 Dominus is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Five thousand cases were produced, a relatively modest amount from this large vineyard’s big crop. Christian Moueix told me that there was plenty of heat in 2012, but there were no excessive hot spells that can plague Napa Valley vintners during the growing season and harvest. This wine’s opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a beautiful nose of sweet crème de cassis, a touch of background oak (only 40% new oak is used), spice box, cedarwood, black cherries and a hint of spring flowers. The complex, intense aromatics are followed by a deep, opulent, multidimensional, full-bodied wine with not a hard edge to be found. Everything is seamlessly crafted in this beauty and the vintage’s abundant richness is well-displayed. This 2012 can be drunk in its exuberant youthfulness or cellared for another 20-25 years.

Boulevard Tropical Pale Ale

Boulevard Tropical Pale Ale...$7.99 / 6pk
With Grapefruit and Passion Fruit
We’re very excited to announce that a new year-round beer will be joining our lineup this spring! Inspired by our collaboration with Florida’s famed Cigar City Brewing, Tropical Pale Ale marries our love and mastery of balanced pale ales with the bright, refreshing flavors of grapefruit and passion fruit accented by juicy, citrusy hops. Tropical Pale Ale begins with a base of soft pilsner malt layered with Maris Otter, Munich and caramel malts. Huge late hopping with a blend of Mosaic, Citra, Topaz, Calypso and Azacca lends bright flavors of mango, pear, blueberry and citrus to a pale ale featuring slightly toasted biscuit and caramel/toffee notes. Tropical Pale Ale is infused with grapefruit peel, grapefruit juice and passion fruit juice at the conclusion of the boil, resulting in a refreshing acidity and bold tropical fruit flavor and aroma.

Tropical Pale Ale is 5.9 ABV and 45 IBU.

Boulevard Saison Brett 2016

Boulevard Smokestack Series Saison Brett....$11.99
Saison-Brett, based on our very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

TWCP single barrel of Wood Hat Bourbon

Wood Hat Bourbon Whiskey Rubenesque...$39.99 / 750ml

Barrel #156
100 proof
Blue Corn
Chinkapin Oak
#3 Char
Bottled exclusively for The Wine and Cheese Place

We diligently control every step of the process to produce a full-bodied flavor. By keeping the grains whole all the way to the end, a bigger robust flavor was created. It did not need much oak to finish it off. Then, by selecting 3 year old, air-dried wood for the barrels, the flavor blossomed without the tannic bite ‒ a process only possible with a small batch, pot distilled, single barrel, field-to-glass creation.

WRC - releases - Blood Oath and Highland Park Ice

Emails sent for the release of these through our Whiskey Reward Club

Blood Oath Pact No.2 Bourbon Whiskey...$89.99 / 750ml
A masterful union of well-bred bourbons. One, a spirited bourbon with a decidedly rye mash bill, unmistakably oaky and strong. Two, a disarmingly-smooth, wheated bourbon to soften the edges, yet intensify the flavor. And three, a port-barrel finished rye for a velvety sweet goodbye. An arranged marriage of the rich, rare and unexpected, for you to have, hold and hide.

Highland Park 17 Year Old Ice Edition...$299.99 / bottle
53.9% ABV
This 17 year old single malt has the classic Highland Park flavour dynamic, similar to Freya in the Valhalla Series.
TASTING NOTES:  A radiant whisky, natural in colour with mirror-like brightness. Up-front, vivid aromas of cool, fresh pineapple and mango sorbet give way to silvery shards of smoke and the frosty kick of root ginger. Like the Ice Giants themselves, the palate is powerful yet smooth, misty peat smoked inter-twined with vanilla seeds. A beautifully balanced finish, with lingering woodiness and spices.

INTRODUCING ICE EDITION: A SINGLE MALT WHISKY FROM A DIFFERENT REALM
We are proud to announce the release of our new ICE Edition bottling, a whisky truly from a different realm, in a special release of 30,000 bottles. This stunning expression evokes the elemental power of ice and celebrates the Viking heritage of our home on Orkney, a place instilled with the magic of Norse mythology.
LEGEND HAS IT:  According to legend, the ice realm, Niflheim, is the homeplace of darkness, cold, ice and frost. The first Ice Giant, Ymir, was born at the beginning of time when the edge of the realm melted from the heat of the neighbouring fire realm, Muspelheim, and he is the first creature mentioned in Norse creation mythology.  As Ymir slept, he gave birth to the Jotun family, a race of powerful Ice Giants standing at over 20 feet high and known as the Gods of Creation. When they shook, fought or sneezed, it caused earthquakes!

GLACIAL PACKAGING:  The bottle is designed to bring to life the dazzling ice realm, with blue-tinted glass and a sharp, faceted shape. The front of the bespoke bottle features a Norse symbol representing the creation of the world, which they believed was protected by a serpent, Jormungandr, biting his own tail. Encased in a mountain-shaped wooden cradle, the whole design reinforces the links to the Ice Realm and its mythology. Watch the video below to see the bottle come to life!
