We are going to select another Single Barrel beer at Side Project Brewing!

We have a date now -- August 28th!!
We are doing another barrel tasting with Cory and Karen King at Side Project Brewing. They are allowing us to bring some customers to taste and you will help select a single barrel of beer to be bottled exclusive for The Wine and Cheese Place. Everyone in attendance will be guaranteed a chance to purchase a bottle of that beer when it is bottled.

We are still working on details - but here is what we know now

• We will be inviting 8  customers to helps us taste and select, like the first event.
• It will take place at Side Project Brewing. August 28th (time to be determined)
• We will invite top beer supporters with a very heavy emphasis on Side Project beer supporters at our stores (you must be a member of our rewards club) and our other TWCP beers.
• Selection will be based on purchases since November 1st, 2023 up until August 10th, 2024

Side Project Merci 2024 Edition....$14.99 / 375ml

Merci was blended for our friend Paul Hayden at The Wine and Cheese Place in St. Louis. We would like to say “Merci” for all his support of Side Project Brewing by releasing Merci Vintage 2024, a blended Missouri Wild Ale.
For this latest Vintage, we focused on one of our favorite iterations of this beer, Blend #2, by incorporating a rich, funky Lambic-like palate, with our classical Side Project depth, and softness. As we do not blend to volume, only to taste, this batch is much smaller than previous releases and is packaged in 375 mL bottles to make sure we have enough to share. We also bottled this release of Merci in early January and have conditioned it exclusively with Brettanomyces Brux., a process we do not often use, for years of purposeful maturation and development in the bottle. We want this beer to express Side Project and our blending characteristics for years to come as you enjoy it now or later while saying “Merci” to those you are thankful for.

Some barrels have such a unique taste they deserve to be presented on their own. These outstanding barrels are set aside for our private barrel program. When we say private barrel we mean it. It's not a blend. We bottle the bourbon from one barrel and move to the next. Once the bottles that come from these barrels are gone, the distinct flavor profile will never be repeated. Every bottle is marked with the barrel’s warehouse number and floor location, how long it has been aged for, and names the retailer or bourbon club that selected the barrel for its flavor profile. Each barrel is unique, first passing our scrutiny, then the scrutiny of the retailers who handpick them for their exceptional characteristics. Only those that stand out get Smoke Wagon’s Private Barrel red stamp.
Since barrels make it to the Private Barrel program, these bottles are rare and limited. If you come by one, be it in a bar, restaurant, or liquor store, we highly recommend you get one!

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Maerzen is unpasteurized and made entirely from smoked malt. Heller Trum is one of the very few breweries left in Germany that does its own malting. During germination of barley, the smoke of beech wood fire is "forced" through the germinating barley for a total of between 24 and 36 hours at varying temperatures; therefore, Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier gains an unusual smoky dryness from this process. In contrast, the standard drying procedure for malt is to be heated in a kiln. The brew is mashed by double decoction, hopped once, bottom fermented, and matured seven weeks.

2023 release of Heigold Single Barrel features the work of Quincy Sutton, a Los Angeles-based illustrator who was selected to create six original pieces to adorn our bottles. He likens his art to jazz music. Using shapes and colors, but no lines, his illustrations might at seem sporadic and chaotic.

Always a good value, the 2021 California Red Wine is no exception and has darker berry fruits, some leafy herb, sage, lavender, and chocolate nuances, full-bodied richness, and a lush, round, seamless style that's already impossible to resist. This is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (with plenty of other red varieties), and it should shine for 7-8 years, if not a decade, although I would drink this puppy in its youth.

Rare Breed: Napa's Affordable Red
Andy Erickson has worked at some of the most expensive wineries in Napa Valley: Screaming Eagle. Harlan Estate. Ovid. Today, he makes or consults on expensive Cabernet Sauvignon for clients including Dalla Valle and his home base at Favia, which he owns with his wife, viticulturist Anne Favia.
He also makes Leviathan, a multi-region blend of red grapes. It's good. It's can also be had for under $40 a bottle, which is astounding for a red wine in Napa today.
So I kept asking him, at a small tasting he hosted recently, Why? Why do you bother making a California-appellation red blend for under $40 a bottle, when you have eight other clients for whom you make $250 Cabernets? Why spend so much time on Leviathan?
To be sure, it does take a lot more work to make an affordable blend, because single-vineyard Napa Cabs – though super expensive – generally call for fairly minimalist winemaking. And an in-demand Napa consulting winemaker making an affordable blend is rare these days.
Erickson didn't really have an answer to Why. But it wasn't hard to figure out the answer from tasting the wines with him: he just likes doing it.....

In 2008, the San Francisco Chronicle ran an article headlined "The new cult wines: 10 wineries to watch." Leviathan was an unexpected member of that list, alongside much more expensive Cabernets. The article says: "It's a chance to access the Screaming Eagle winemaker's talents for under $50 – far less than most of his projects." But what Erickson said really got people excited was the mystery.....
