Rare magnums of Grand Cru Chablis!

Rare magnums of Grand Cru Chablis!
2016 Roland Lavantureaux Chablis Vaudesir Grand Cru...$179.99 / 1.5 liter
Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir

• Mostly fermented in barrels and a small part in stainless steel
• 85% of wine is aged in barrels that are 3 to 5 years old and 15% of the wine is aged in new oak
With a sharp eye, natural instinct, and solid Burgundian pragmatism, Roland Lavantureux made a name for himself crafting no-nonsense Chablis that has come to be one of the most reliable of the old reliables here at Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant.
The region is best known for its Kimmeridgian soils, a highly prized terroir of limestone and clay infused with tiny, fossilized oysters. The intensely chalky sea-shell minerality lends deep complexity to whites, making this region an ideal home for the Chardonnay grape.

Magnums of Beaucastel

Magnums of Beaucastel in stock at Rock Hill now!

2014 is drinking great right now!

2014 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape...$149.99 / MAGNUM
The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape is a beautiful wine in the vintage, and Marc Perrin compares it to the 2012. I’m not sure I agree, but there’s no denying the quality in this 2014. Sporting a deep ruby color and terrific notes of blackberries, ground herbs, pepper and Provençal spice, it shows the more forward, charming nature of the vintage and is medium to full-bodied, pure and balanced. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

2016 Super Tuscans

The 2016 Super Tuscans Are Here!
As with much of Europe the 2016 Vintage in Tuscany has proved a more than worthy follow up to the much hyped 2015's. Showing more elegance and lift than the more brooding 2015's we are very excited to offer the highest scoring wines of the vintage!

2016 Sassicaia Bolgheri...$229.98
The 2016 Sassicaia is a wine of soaring achievement. I tasted this wine several times during the course of its creation in both barrel and bottle, and the highly deserved 100-point score you see here was enthusiastically assigned at the conclusion of a mini vertical in which I tasted and compared the 2016 vintage against 2015 (which I scored 97 points). It makes perfect sense to present these two excellent vintages in back-to-back comparison fashion because they are two of the best to emerge from Bolgheri, and indeed Tenuta San Guido, in recent memory. These are very similar vintages with long, hot summer months that fueled a long growing season. There was a bit more rain in 2016, and in analytical terms this vintage has a tad more acidity. However, the results in the glass are extraordinarily different. The 2015 vintage is exuberant, round, succulent and immediate, whereas the 2016 vintage shows pinpoint sharpness and precision (with similar grit and texture at the back). That acidity will carry it long into the future as the wine completes its slow evolutionary course. This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine's tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors. To my mind, the 2016 Sassicaia stands tall next to the epic 1985 vintage that set the ultimate benchmark for vino italiano.

2016 Ornellaia Bolgheri....$219.99

The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a wine of extreme complexity and precision. It offers monumental depth with profound layers of black fruit, coffee, licorice and baking chocolate. I tasted this 2016 vintage beside the less-impactful 2015 vintage (which was reviewed last year). These two editions are very different when compared side to side, and this 2016 release is clearly superior in terms of the quality, clarity and intensity of its offerings. This Ornellaia delivers glossy shine and a polished texture that segues to important richness, concentration and textural fiber. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting waves of sweet dark fruit and dark spice that linger for many long minutes. This beautiful wine is hitting the market now, but collectors will want to put it straight into their cellars for safekeeping.

2016 Setti Ponti Oreno....$67.98
Gorgeous floral and deep, dark berry aromas with hints of spices such as cinnamon and hazelnuts. Full body and ultra-fine and strong tannins that are powerful yet so sleek and beautiful. Fantastic length and texture. Deep, dark and profound. Takes you on a long journey and shows you its true character. Better in 2025. Give it time

2016 Antinori Guado Al Tasso....$114.98
This stunning vintage of this landmark wine marks a slight adjustment to the blend. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Guado Al Tasso is no longer made with Petit Verdot. The blend is now 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and now 20% Cabernet Franc. This small change does not go unnoticed, as this wine is absolutely seamless now—like the finest Asian silk fabric. That profound textural softness and suppleness changes the way the wine smells and tastes, with hints of momentary sweetness that are more tactile than anything else. Generally speaking, the 2016 vintage offers more elegance (slightly less concentration) and a hair more freshness compared to the 2015 edition. When I tasted this wine, the bouquet was still timid, but it will no doubt become more expressive and open as this beautiful wine continues forward along its aging trajectory.

Wittenberg Distilling Blue Wing Rye Whiskey....$32.99
45% ABV
Made in Missouri

"My family was in the distilling business in St. Louis from the 1880s until Prohibition put them out of business in 1919. They sold whiskey they made under the name Blue Wing Whiskey. We found a copy of the original front label on the internet and my brother, who is an artist, was able to recreate it for use today.  C.H. Wittenberg Distilling Co. made both a bourbon and a rye. We focused on a rye. This whiskey is a blend of 60% rye, 15% caramelized rye and 25% smoked barley malt. I am collaborating with a small local distillery that makes several other fine spirits, Square One Distillery in Lafayette Square, to make the whiskey. This is a very rare opportunity to bring back this spirit to market." -- William C. Wittenberg, owner

This process and care lead to drinks that are extraordinary in quality, taste, and body and also complex, clean, and crisp.

Nirvana Vodka is at home in a martini, on the rocks, or in a gimlet as it is in a “Bloody Mary Jane.” And, Nirvana Gin is an especially versatile spirit in a gin martini, in a simple gin and tonic, or in complex gin cocktails.

Black Slate

More great press for Black Slate!
It is hard to believe that we started working with the Black Slate lineup all the way back with the 2010 Vintage!  I wonder if any of our customers still have a 2010 Black Slate Porrera or La Vilella Alta in their cellar? If so we would love to hear how they are tasting. Looking back on our original blog post from 2013 I am amazed that the prices for these gems are still under $20. It was true then and it is true now, the wines represent some of the greatest values from any region in the world.

2016 Black Slate La Vilella Alta Priorat....$19.99
This generous red features a round, soft texture that carries ripe black fruit flavors, laced with licorice, toast and loamy earth notes. Offers well-integrated tannins and gentle acidity. Pretty floral and cinnamon details emerge on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 1,800 cases imported.
Rated 93/100 The Wine Spectator

2017 Black Slate Gratallops Vi De La Vila Priorat...$18.99
The 2017 Black Slate Gratallops Vi De La Vila comes from a warmer region in the Priorat and has a more powerful, ripe, opulent style compared to the Porrera cuvée, which comes from a cooler region. A huge nose of mulled cherries, dried earth, spice, and dusty pebble-like minerality gives way to a medium to full-bodied Priorat that has ripe tannins, an opulent, sexy texture, and a great finish. It’s another wine from Solomon that has classic Priorat character, is impeccably balanced, and drinks way above its humble price point. Don’t miss it! The blend is 58% Grenache, 32% Carignan, and 10% Syrah, aged 12 months in 20% new French oak.

Cheese Features - Vermont Cheddar vs. Oregon Cheddar

This week we are featuring two Cheddar producers.

Cabot from Vermont vs. Tillamook from Oregon

Come in for a taste and pick a favorite.
We will see which one sells better and post the results next week!

White Cheddar vs. Yellow Cheddar - What is the difference?
The only difference in color is the result of a coloring additive. Typically the color comes from a plant extract of the achiote tree called annatto.  Does not mean one is sharper than the other.   It is totally up to the producer.  As you might notice the practice did not catch on in Vermont, you do not see many yellow vermont cheddars.
Why did they start coloring cheese?  It started back in England.  Cheese that had a higher fat content would be darker in color.   Cheesemakers found out that they could skim the cream of their milk and sell the cream it at a premium before making their cheese.  This resulted in a cheese with less fat content and less color.  So some started adding coloring to their cheese to make up for the loss of color and to make their cheese stand out at the cheese markets.  So the story goes.....

Cabot Private Stock Cheddar
"Cabot is proud to offer its fine Private Stock Cheddar in Specialty Waxed bricks to suit the needs of any kitchen. Aged for a minimum of 16 months, this lactose-free cheddar has a tart kick behind a smooth, creamy texture. Great for adding a hint of complexity to traditional recipes or for serving up solo as the star of the show." - Cabot

Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar
Cultured Milk, Salt, Enzymes
Enzymes Turns milk into cheese curds and separates the whey,
Annatto derived from achiote seeds, it gives our cheddar its yellow color
Aged with time, not shortcuts.
The year was 1909 when a small, farmer-owned co-op on the Oregon coast discovered the key to making the perfect, award-winning cheddar. The secret lived in a simple recipe, a traditional method, and time to let the sharp cheddar flavors develop naturally. Today, we’re still attached to our time-honored process and it’ll never get old.

Great Bordeaux! Le Petit Lafitte

2016 Le Petit Haut Lafitte...$39.99
The 2016 Le Petit Haut Lafitte is a fabulous second wine from Smith Haut Lafitte. Inky blue/purplish berry fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and cloves give the Petit Haut Lafitte its striking aromatic complexity. Deep, resonant and exquisitely layered, the 2016 is a real joy to taste. I would cellar it for another year or two. The 2016 has enough depth and pedigree to develop beautifully for the next 10-15 years.

From a top site in the Santa Maria Valley that's just to the southwest of Bien Nacido, the 2014 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard Suerte comes mostly from clone 115, but has 25% each from 667 and 777. Aged 15 months in 75% new French oak, it's another lighter colored beauty that offers upfront, fresh and fruit-driven notes of strawberries, framboise, violets and spring flowers. Elegant, layered, pure and with good acidity and fine tannin, it's already hard to resist, yet should evolve nicely on its balance.
