Accendo Cabernet - a new project from Araujo

2015 Accendo Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon...$329.99
Produced from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up profound wild blueberries, freshly crushed blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries scents with suggestions of Chinese five spice, Sichuan pepper, bay leaves and lavender plus a savory touch of yeast extract. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with expressive, multilayered blue and black fruits, all supported by ripe, fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long with a compelling earthiness coming through.
Rated 97+/100 Wine Advocate
Offers ample fruit, as creamy boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry notes glide through easily, framed liberally with warm cocoa and vanilla details and ending with a long, polished feel. Subtle mint and tobacco elements peek through at the very end, keeping this nicely grounded. Fruit-driven but built to last. Drink now through 2038. 617 cases made.
Rated 95/100 Wine Spectator
Rated 97/100 Vinous Media

Accendo Cellars is Bart and Daphne Araujo’s new project, following the incredible success and eventual sale of Araujo Estate, now known as Eisele Vineyard after the property’s jewel vineyard that dates back to the 1800s, which was purchased by Francois Pinault of Chateau Latour fame in 2013. So, what could the Araujo’s possibly do for a follow-up act to reestablishing one of Napa Valley’s most historic, iconic single vineyards? They decided to take inspiration from another era in Napa’s rich history—that of the mid-twentieth century, when blending wines from vineyards throughout the valley was the norm. The Araujos explained that Accendo Cellars is about getting back to “old style Napa,” somewhat in spite of global warming. They wanted to achieve wines of restraint and elegance by being able to bring in fruit earlier, but they also wanted to achieve all the layers and complexity possessed by the greatest wines of the world. They have thus far selected to work with several vineyards, including Sleeping Lady, Vine Hill Ranch and Oakville Ranch, to produce their first efforts. The blending process is overseen by none other than master-blender Michel Rolland. Bravo to the Araujos and Rolland for, in particular, superbly capturing the best of the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage attributes so singularly and poignantly!

J. Lohr Pure Paso Proprietary Red Wine

2017 J. Lohr Pure Paso Proprietary Red Wine...$24.99
For being a larger production winery, J. Lohr continually produces lush and delicious wines that continue to define the Paso Robles potential. This new blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec begins with strawberry, violet and baking spice on the nose, while the palate's creamy mouthfeel carries mocha, cappuccino, caramel and black cherry flavors. There's just enough tannic firmness to the lush profile

Combier Kummel

Hard to find Kummel in St. Louis.  We have one!

Combier Kummel Extra...$36.99
76 proof
RECIPE FIRST BOTTLE BY COMBIER AROUND 1850
Kümmel originally debuted in Holland during the late 16th century
Surprisingly smooth anise taste. Made using highly aromatic and flavorful herbs native to the Mediterranean.  All Natural

Kümmel, also called kummel or kimmel, is a sweet, colorless liqueur flavored with caraway seed, cumin, and fennel. Originally, the words kümmel, kummel, and kimmel were somewhat generic terms in the German, Dutch, and Yiddish languages, respectively, meaning both caraway and cumin.

Combier Kümmel made its debut at the Combier Distillery in the mid-19th century satisfying the demands of British, Dutch, German and Russian elite enamored with the liqueur’s medicinal and aromatic properties. It is re-released today with the same powerful, lifted aromas and refined taste it became known for more than 150 years ago.

Combier Kümmel is best served cold either neat or over ice

2017 Chateau de Lancyre Pic Saint Loup Coste d'Aleyrac...$19.99

50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Carignan.
Blackberries, ground pepper, dried earth and peppered meat notes all dominate the 2017 Pic Saint Loup Coste D'Aleyrac, a ripe, rounded, complex, almost Northern Rhône-like red to drink over the coming 7-8 years. The blend is 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Carignan, brought up all in tank.
Rated 92/100 Jeb Dunnuck
Crushed stone and flowering garrigue notes mark the nose of the 2017 Pic Saint Loup Coste d'Aleyrac, a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Carignan aged solely in tank. Blackberries and licorice appear on the medium to full-bodied palate, which is smooth and supple, gliding easily into a long, savory finish.

Campil Blanco -- amazing value!

Lapostolle Carmenere Cuvee Alexandre

Chile's Dinosaur Grape Carmenere
After being desimmated to the point that it was presumed extinct by the Phylloxera epidemic that hit Europe in the late 19th Century, Carmenere has found a new home in Chile. While it was originally mistaken for Merlot, Carmenere has become one of Chile's most distinct varietals. We are excited to offer one of Chile's best Carmenere

2016 Lapostolle Carmenere Cuvee Alexandre...$23.99
I love how the leafy complexity of dried sage, pine cones and forest floor combines with earth and paprika, but then with very fresh fruit, such as blueberries and citrus. Medium to full body, chewy and grainy tannins and a bark-laden finish. Drink in 2023.

100% TARIFFS ON ALL EUROPEAN WINES, WHISKEY, CHEESE, & SPECIALTY FOODS THREATEN ST. LOUIS SMALL BUSINESSES

Dear Friend of The Wine & Cheese Place,

On October 18, 2019, the U.S. announced 25% tariffs on certain E.U. produced wines, spirits, and cheeses.  On December 12, the U.S. announced that tariffs of up to 100% may be levied on all E.U. produced wine, whiskey, cheese, olive oil, and other gourmet items in response to unrelated trade practices conducted by the E.U. regarding the aerospace and internet services industries.  These tariffs threaten the survival of all Missouri based retailers, importers, and distributors of wine, spirits, and cheese.

The U.S. is set to determine whether to implement the up to 100% tariff increase later this January and the tariffs could go into effect as early as February.

The tariffs are paid by U.S. importers, not the E.U.  As a result, we expect that substantially all imports of E.U. produced wine, spirits and cheeses will effectively stop should the existing tariffs be significantly increased.  We already know of one importer who has laid off workers as a result of the current tariffs and plans to shutter the business they created more than three decades ago if tariffs are increased.

Prices will increase on both domestic and foreign wines, spirits and cheese as imports fall and supply for imported items and like domestic products runs thin.  We have already been informed that certain U.S. bourbon producers are planning to raise prices and Scotch whiskey wholesale prices for Q1 2020 have increased significantly over 2019 levels.

The outcome of additional tariffs on Missouri business will be the bankruptcy of small importers, distributors, and retailers and increased power of major corporate entities, many owned by non-Missourians.  These large corporations will sweep up the market share of small business owners who grew successful companies in a competitive market through hard work, risk taking and perseverance.  Consumers will end up paying more for less variety and impersonal service.

The Wine & Cheese Place enjoys a large inventory of wines and spirits and has the knowledge and experience to source non-tariffed items that will appeal to our customers.  We therefore are confident that, in our 38th year of operations, we will successfully navigate our customers towards wines, spirits, and cheeses that appeal to them at their desired price points, regardless of country of origin.  However, the disruption these potential tariffs pose to our business is troubling and we want to keep the St. Louis wine, spirits, and gourmet scene as vibrant and competitive as ever.  Therefore we are asking our customers to help our company, and countless other Missouri-based companies, by buying from small, local wine, spirits, and cheese purveyors.

Should you want to register your opinion on this matter with the office of the U.S. Trade Representative, we urge you to do so by clicking this link: http://bit.ly/TWCPtariff.  Also, please reach out to your elected representatives to share you concerns.

Thank you for your patronage.  We  looking forward to serving you for many years to come.
