2016 Jadot

2016 Jadot!!
Very low yields this year!
Much smaller production!

2016 Jadot Pommard Rugiens Premier Cru...$105.99
(two-thirds of a normal yield): Bright medium red. Pure but reticent aromas of cherry, minerals, iron and menthol. A distinct step up in intensity and juiciness from the Clos de la Commaraine, displaying captivating depth and peppery lift to the sappy flavors of cherry, spices and dried flowers. An element of vendange entier contributes punch. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and rising floral length. Excellent potential.
Rated 90-92/100 Stephen Tanzer

2016 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru...$439.99
(Jadot made 85% of a normal yield here): Bright, full red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of cherry and raspberry enlivened by rose petal, menthol and crushed stone. Compellingly rich and dense but light on its feet; even richer and riper than the Chapelle but still with terrific inner-mouth energy and juicy definition. The intense red berry flavors are complicated by an exotic spicy/herbal element of za'atar. Even more backward than the Chapelle but the tannins are wonderfully refined and the raspberry and spice finish at least as long. (Jadot also has a single purchased barrel of Chambertin, but the wine was too reduced and leathery to assess--not to mention chunky and a bit aggressive following a very late malo.)

Rated 93-95/100 Burghound

2016 Jadot Clos de Couchereaux Premier Cru...$57.99
Bright medium red with a palish rim. Slightly musky, subdued red raspberry and mineral aromas show good energy and purity. Pristine and tightly wound, displaying a fine-grained texture and lovely inner-mouth floral lift. A very pretty wine with a light touch and subtle rising length without any hardness. This steep, south-facing, high-altitude site features thin soil over chalk and consistently produces wines with high-quality tannins, according to Barnier. The yield here was less than 15 hectoliters per hectare, but this very promising premier cru is nicely balanced.
Rated 89-92/100 Stephen Tanzer

2016 Jadot Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees 1er Cru...$123.99
The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées has the best bouquet from Jadot among the premier cru Chambolles, with crisp red cherry and raspberry notes soaked in minerals and smoke, an achievement considering the vineyard was impacted by frost. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin, crisp acidity and a lithe, sensual, silky smooth finish. Bravo.

2016 Jadot Volnay Santenots....$85.99
Medium red. Sexy fruit cocktail notes of raspberry and pomegranate are complicated by savory minerality and a whiff of coffee. Nicely ripe and pliant, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying a relaxed quality despite the fact that 40% of the crop was lost. This rather suave wine finishes with a touch of menthol, ripe tannins and attractive floral persistence. This fruit was picked early, on September 22, but the grower did a very good job sorting, noted Barnier. As Jadot purchased the sizable Domaine Prieur-Brunet last summer, there will be a separate domain bottling of Santenots beginning with the '17, but this négociant version will continue to be made. (My sample of the Volnay en l'Ormeau, a site hard hit by frost, was a bit oxidative as well as quite tannic, and impossible to assess.)

Rated 89-92/100 Burghound

2016 Jadot Corton Pougets Grand Cru...$122.99
The 2016 Corton Pougets Grand Cru has an earthy, cedar-tinged bouquet that has personality and is nicely defined with good vigor. The palate is well defined with juicy, ripe red cherry and boysenberry fruit, impressive focus with a more introverted finish that will hopefully come out of its shell once in bottle. This is one to watch.

2016 Jadot Chassagne Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot...$97.99
Bright, pale yellow. Pear and white flowers are complicated by a note of marzipan on the nose. Suave, juicy and light on its feet, with sharply focused lemon and floral flavors lifted by harmonious acidity. This energetic, very precise wine is most impressive today on the rising, slowly mounting back end. This wine from a relatively cool site was a sentimental favorite of mine at Jadot for its floral character and class. The yield was two-thirds of normal in 2016, according to Frédéric Barnier.
Rated 91/100 Stephen Tanzer
The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot has a rather conservative yet well-defined bouquet with light wet stone scents percolating through the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity. The new oak is more pronounced here than the other Chassagnes but that will be subsumed with time. Good potential here.
Rated 89-92/100 The Wine Advocate

Château des Jacques Morgon Côte du Py

2016 Château des Jacques (Louis Jadot) Morgon Côte du Py...$36.99
This was a very creditable performance from the 2016 Morgon Côte du Py, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated wine with tangy acids and an attractive bouquet of blackberries, wild berries and cracked black pepper. Though affected, yields were less impacted by hail in Morgon than in Moulin-à-Vent, and the wine is a bit more classic in profile as a result.

2017 Borne of Fire Cabernet Sauvignon

People loved the 2016 - new vintage!
2017 Borne of Fire Cabernet Sauvignon...$19.99

Borne of Fire is a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a remote new vineyard region in eastern Washington State known by locals as “The Burn.” This exciting region was named from legends of early settlers who set fire to the land in the fall to replenish and rejuvenate the grasslands for their horses in the spring. Borne of Fire is a wine that, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, has laid claim to this unique land with a torrid past and found its true awakening: grape growing. From a rugged terrain where agriculture was scarce to where present grapes grow mighty, Borne of Fire is a new expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that was created to reflect the uniqueness of this unlikely terroir.

Previous vintage scored huge, nothing on the 2017 yet
2016 Borne of Fire Cabernet Sauvignon The Burn
This is the first year made of this wine with wonderful blackberries, rose leaves and blueberries. Wildly floral. Stems. Full body and round and fine tannins. Juicy and intense. Shows an eccentric style. All large oak. A new nature and personality. Drink now or hold.

Best Sipping Rums of 2018: The Ultimate Holiday Gift GuideFrom Forbes

Best Sipping Rums of 2018: The Ultimate Holiday Gift GuideFrom Forbes

Fred Minnick

Dining & Drinking
I cover spirits, the drinks culture and business.

Rum is an amazing sipper.
Put any of these rums up against the best brandies or whiskeys and you'll see that well-aged rum deserves an opportunity to please your palate.
And the best part, you can still find the elite rums. That's right.
While bourbon geeks stand in lines with a hope--no, a prayer--to land a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, rum enthusiasts can still walk into many American liquor stores and find the best rums.
But you cannot rest on your tiki shorts: People are starting to learn of rum's sipping beauty.

Before I get into my best sipping rums of 2018, I must offer a couple disclaimers: This is my opinion and I assessed these on their sipping merit vs. cocktail glory. There are many great rums in the world (I've tasted most), and these are what I believe to be the very best of 2018. They were selected after a long year of tasting, in which I shortlisted these as the best of the best for my palate.

Best Sipping Rums

Foursquare Premise 10-year-old, 92 proof,  $55.99 Barbados click to order online now

About: Aged in ex bourbon and sherry casks. It is a blend of pot and column molasses distillates.
Foursquare is simply on a roll. The distillery releases the best rums year in and year out. This beautiful spice-forward rum exudes an in-your-face style more aligned with cask strength styles than 92 proofers. Molasses, Jamaican jerk, clove and other baking spices are the hallmarks to this beauty. Then, it’s hints of vanilla, coffee and toffee. It finishes long and strong with a mouthful of spice.

BEST RUM:
Foursquare 2005, 118 proof, $64.99 Barbados click to order online nowAbout: 12 years old, blend of pot and column and aged in former bourbon barrels.
Foursquare Distillery year in and year out releases some of the world's best rums. This year is no different. Its 2005 release is Fred Minnick's Pick for World's Best Sipping Rum.
This is quite simply one of the best spirits in the world. In the same league as its predecessors—2004 and 2006—Foursquare 2005 is a complex beast with flavors pouring out of the palate. I’d say this is a once-in-a-lifetime rum, but Foursquare seems to be releasing this high quality all the time. For this delicious release, you’ll get a cadre of complex sweet and savory, from buttermilk biscuits with melted butter to intense brown sugar, coconut, maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses, rye bread and even marzipan. It’s ripe with all sorts of vanilla and caramel, but the consistent and residual flavor is the maple and molasses notes that just wow the palate. This impressive rum’s unrelenting mouthfeel simply encompasses every inch of the palate. This is my pick for Best Rum of 2018.

Kilbeggan Small Batch Rye

Kilbeggan Small Batch Rye....$33.99
Kilbeggan Small Batch Rye is a product of the town’s perseverance – the first whiskey 100% distilled and matured at the Kilbeggan Distillery to be released since its restoration was completed in 2010. Featuring a heritage mash of malt, barley, and ~30% rye, this whiskey hearkens back to the 1890s when many large Irish distillers used rye in their mash. However, this spicy grain virtually disappeared from the Irish Whiskey category around the time of Prohibition and the Irish War of Independence. Double distilled in Kilbeggan’s copper pot stills – one of which is the oldest working whiskey pot still in the world today – Kilbeggan® Small Batch Rye is the first of its kind in today’s market, as it is the only modern Irish Whiskey of record to use this amount of rye in its mash.

Clear Creek Distillery Cassis

Clear Creek Distillery Cassis...$19.99 / 375ml
A wonderful Portland restaurant once suggested that we make a liqueur similar to what the French call “Crème de Cassis” from Oregon blackcurrants. Of course we had to do it, and the result is truly wonderful: an intensely tart, lightly sweet, slightly earthy liqueur with huge fruit flavor. Our blackcurrants come from a farm less than half an hour from the distillery. They arrive at the distillery still warm from the sun, with their woody little tops still attached, and are immediately dumped into our clear, un-aged brandy. After months of maceration, the solids are pressed off, and some sugar is added. Put a splash of Cassis Liqueur in your bubbly and you’re immediately transported to the Parisian cafes that made classic Kir and Kir Royale (cassis in white wine or champagne, respectively) so popular.

Lighthouse Batch Distilled Gin.. ..From New Zealand

Lighthouse Batch Distilled Gin....$33.99
From New Zealand
Today, under the direction of Rachel Hall, Lighthouse Gin continues to produce small batch gin with its unique blend of nine botanicals. The unique blend continues to impress connoisseurs and experts around the globe with high scores and exceptional reviews.
Established in 2005 by Neil Catherall, Lighthouse Gin is the culmination of years of hard work, research and native botanicals, brought together to create a truly authentic New Zealand gin. The design and inspiration for this gin came from the Cape Palliser Lighthouse at the southernmost tip of the North Island of New Zealand. With the famous lighthouse in mind, founder and Master Distiller, Neil Catherall, spent several years researching and experimenting with a variety of native botanicals, including fresh zest from New Zealand grown Navel Oranges and Yen Ben Lemons, to create a unique small batch gin. During his years of research, Neil designed a 200 litre copper still from scratch and had it built by the local craftsmen. With his custom still built and his unique botanical formula complete, Neil went to work crafting the first batches of Lighthouse gin. As the production and demand for the gin increased, distiller Rachel Hall joined the Lighthouse team in 2010 to assist Neil. Rachel spent the next few years learning as much as she could from Neil before being named Head Distiller of Lighthouse Gin in 2014.
