2002 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne

SOLD OUT

Rated 98/100 The Wine Advocate

Limited release - 2002  was a very small crop and according to The Wine Spectator, only 150 cases are being imported in to the United States!

We have 120 bottles
update: sold out

2002 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne...$153.99
We are lowest price in the country on Wine-Searcher
(no additional discount)

Taittinger’s 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is off the charts. I have tasted the 2002 now many times, and it has never been less than thrilling. A vivid kaleidoscope of pure Chardonnay aromas and flavors opens up in the glass. The 2002 is at once incredibly rich yet also totally weightless and impeccable in its balance. All the classic Comtes notes are there, but with a level of detail and nuance I don’t think I have ever seen before. The 2002 is breathtakingly beautiful today, but also appears to have the stuffing to age for decades. Personally...Sadly, there is little wine to go around as 2002 was a very short crop. Readers who can track down the 2002 are in store for something truly great. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2042.

This is a fabulous set of new releases from Taittinger. The 2002 Comtes de Champagne is easily one of the very best young Champagnes I have ever tasted. Over the next year or so, Taittinger plans to list more information about their NV wines on the back labels, something that is a huge positive for the consumer.

CINSAULT:
image from wikipedia

Cinsault: Pronounced (san-soh) Cinsault is the fourth most widely planted grape varietal in France, and is particularly important to the Languedoc-Roussillon region as a blending grape to add color and bouquet. Among other accomplishments, like being the most widely planted grape in Morocco, Cinsault is also the varietal that South African professor Abraham Izak Perold crossed with Pinot Noir in 1925 to make South Africa’s flagship varietal Pinotage. While not often bottled on it’s own, wines made exclusively from Cinsault can be quiet enjoyable for their intense bouquets and soft supple mouth feel, and can be a lovely compliment to lighter meats and fatty fish (tuna or salmon).

Pick up a bottle of 2010 Terres Falmet Cinsault at any of the four Wine and Cheese Place locations to see what makes this such a compelling varietal.

2010 Terres Falmet Cinsault.....$13.99
The grapes for this wine are 100% hand-harvested. Yves’ Cinsault comes from a plot of 50+ year old Cinsault vines planted on beautiful hillside vineyards in Saint-Chinian. The wine is vinified and aged in tank. There is no oak ageing.

Great "GSM" from Duval

John Duval Plexus "GSM"...$31.99
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Plexus Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre is a blend of Shiraz 52%, Grenache 29% and Mourvedre 19%. This wine opens with notes of blackberry preserves, blueberry compote and warm black plums over suggestions of vanilla, cinnamon toast, anise, espresso and mandarin peel. Full-bodied and generously fruited with warm black berry and spice flavors plus a touch of oak, it has a good backbone of medium to firm finely-grained tannins and just enough acid to balance through the long finish. It’s delicious now but should improve with 2-3 years in bottle and drink well to 2022+.

Troubadour Imperial Stout

Belgian Stout in stock at Forsyth

Troubadour Imperial Stout...$13.99 / 750ml
This beautiful beer has an almost black body and a large tan and lasting head. It's a pretty bitter, strongly roasted coffee & malty beer. The aroma is dry, roasted, "nutty" and smokey. The strong bitter chocolate impression let it end in a nice bitter finish. This beer contains 4 different types of malt, roasted barley and 2 types of hop. The overall result is how an Imperial Stout should taste, with a Belgian touch.

Cocchi Americano

We have been carrying the original Bianco - but now we also have the pink!

The original white....
Cocchi Americano Bianco Aperitif Wine..$17.99
Made to the same recipe since 1891, this extraordinary aperitif wine has long been a staple of Asti. On a base of Moscato di Asti is infused a blend of herbs, fruit and spices, most notably cinchona, gentian and citrus, and laid down for a year before being released. In Piemonte it is served chilled with ice, a twist of orange peel and a splash of soda to bring out all its natural aroma and fragrances. Outside of Italy it is revered as one of last great blanc/bianco aperitif wines, essential to a wide range of classic mixed drinks.
Product of Italy. 16.5% Alc./Vol., 750ml

Plus the new Rose
Cocchi Americano Rosa Aperitif Wine....$17.99
Throughout its history, the House of Cocchi has periodically produced alternate varieties of its Americano Aperitif Wine. Here the base is of two varietals unique to the region and more often used in sparkling wines, Brachetto d'Acqui and Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco, famous for imparting notes of white rose and summer berries. These are blended with herbs, fruit and spices, most notably gentian, cinchona and citrus. Enjoy on ice with soda or tonic and a slice of lemon.

Rustic Bakery

Rustic Bakery

Using only the finest organic products Rustic Bakery of Marin County California, produces wonderful and flavorful flatbreads and pan forte crostini. In stock at the Forsyth location.

Sweet Onion and Crème Fraiche Flatbread:

Our most popular flavor, the sweet organic onions are mellowed by careful roasting in our ovens. Using Strauss Dairy cream to make our crème fraiche contributes to the wonderful taste of this flavor. Fantastic pairings include: Triple cream cheese such as Brillat Savarin or Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam, cave aged Gruyere or Emmantel.

Wild Mushroom and Truffle Flatbread:

Filled with the distinctive earthy and rich flavors of wild mushrooms and truffles this flat bread is wonderful served with a simple salted butter or a bright, fresh chevre.

Kalamata Olive Sourdough Flatbread:
This delicious flat bread is made using Divina organic olives which we hand pit and mince to knead into the bread. The result is a true olive flavor which compliments fresh Chevre, Humbolt Fog or creamy Baskeriu

Cranberry, Pecan and Rosemary Pan Forte:
Three diffenent flavors combine in this pan forte with the note of fresh rosemary coming through. This flavor is nutty and sweet with the added twist of herbal in the mix. Delightful on its own or paired with creamy brie or Tallegio.

Tart Bing Cherry, almonds and Valrhona cacao nib Pan Forte:
This thin crisp toast has a classic flavor combination of dried cherries, almonds and cacao nibs giving it a sweet, slightly chocolate flavor. Lightly sprinkled with crystal sugar, this pan forte is a great match with creamy goat cheese, but, could also stand in for a cookie with a glass of milk.

Tia Maria Coffee Liqueur....$4.99 / 375ml

The legend of TIA MARIA dates back to the mid-17th century, when a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat fled the turmoil colonial war brought to the island of Jamaica. Her maid saved one family treasure, a small jewelry box with black pearl earrings and an ancient manuscript with the recipe for a mysterious liqueur. The recipe was named after the courageous woman: TIA MARIA. It was then rediscovered in the 1950s by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who began to produce and market it. Still made to the original Caribbean recipe by ILLVA Saronno and distributed in over 60 countries, TIA MARIA is an exotic infusion of natural vanilla and the finest fresh coffee roasted to perfection, complemented with a touch of Jamaican rum. Rich copper and golden amber tones blend with an enticing caramel nose to make TIA MARIA an ideal mixer in exotic cocktails.

Collaboration between Ommegang and Brasserie d ‘Achouffe

New batch is here with a new label

Ommegang and Brasserie d ‘Achouffe bring you ----

GNOMEGANG!!

Rated 97/100 RateBeer

"(COOPERSTOWN, NY) The cheerful gnomes of Belgian farmstead Brasserie d ‘Achouffe dropped by the Brewery Ommegang farmstead brewery in the summer of 2010.

They brought with them a typically gnomic idea: why not co-create a totally new beer to bridge both farmsteads across the Atlantic Ocean? The beer happily evolved through multiple pilot brews and tastings, resulting in a strong Belgian Golden Ale using Chouffe yeast in the primary fermentation and Ommegang yeast in the secondary. The lushly fruity and spicy yeast is a signature found in every Chouffe beer, and the combination of their yeast, our brewing skills, and our own yeast yielded a unique, flavorful, and aromatic dose of brewing magic. The beer was deemed a big success by Chouffe gnomes and Ommegang alike, was christened Gnomegang, and went into commercial production as a Limited Edition Ommegang ale for sale beginning in the second quarter of 2011.

In appearance, Gnomegang is a rich, translucent gold, with a big, fluffy white head. The high-carbonation is readily apparent. The nose focuses on distinctive clove aromas, combined with yeasty fruitiness typical of Chouffe beers. Flavors include ripe fruit, clove, light caramel, non-cloying candy sweetness, smooth maltiness, and well-balanced hopping. Mouthfeel offers a big, round body with full, fine carbonation. The finish is dry and warming, lingering gracefully.

Gnomegang Specs:
Style: Belgian-style Strong Blonde Ale
Malts: Pilsner, Carapils, Flaked Oats, flaked Red Wheat, Special B
Hops: two Saaz varieties, hopped 3 times
Spices: none
Sugar: yes
Yeast: Chouffe yeast in primary fermentation, Ommegang yeast in bottle conditioning
OG: 19.9 o Plato
FG: 2.9 o Plato

2011 Jorge Ordonez & Co Victoria #2...$21.99 / 375ml

From the same winery as the dry Botani, the incredibly perfumed, floral 2011 Victoria No. 2 is a delicious dessert wine that possesses about 13% natural alcohol. Made from 100% Moscatel de Alexandria, 17 pounds of grapes are required to make one 375 ml bottle. This raisiny, rich, thick dessert wine’s fragrance could fill a large room. This amazing creation should be served chilled at the end of a meal with nothing next to it. It should last for 6-10+ years.

Hof Ten Dormaal took the same beer and aged it in 8 different barrels --

$17.99 / 750ml each

More info about each....

Brew nº1: Gin (jenever)
The first beer made in our new oak aged gamma has been aged on Belgian Gin barrels. The aroma searches a balance between caramel, toasted bread and some fruity aspects such as apricot and plum. Also there is some form of spices, tasted as pepper and safran. The taste itself is mainly exotic fruit flavours, cassis and caramel. We end with a pure beer taste with a royal dose of heating alcohol.
Barrels:
provenance: Distillery Filliers near Ghent (Belgium)
contained the 100% authentic gin for 5 years

Brew nº2: Cognac

This complex beer was brewed in cognac barrels that have contained cognac for at least 40 years. You will experience a mild alcohol aroma that is balanced by vanilla overtones coming from the wood and a fresh fruitiness reminiscent of apricots. The mouthfeel is velvety with flavors of honey coming through with every sip.

Barrels:

provenance: family distilery Clos de Nancrevant, situated in Chanier (France)
contained cognac for at least 40 years.

Brew nº3: Madeira

This beer is comparable with the beer aged in the Armagnac barrels, however the aroma is much more subtle. You can experience a mild alcoholic aroma, with a balanced flavour of vanilla, coming from the wood, and a fresh fruitiness reminiscent of apricot. Tasting this will give you a velvety taste, the honey like sweetness masks the degree of alcohol. The aftertaste is dominated by almond so the comparison with Amaretto isn't far away. In short, the perfect dessert beer!

Barrels:

provenance: Madeira (Portugal)

Brew nº4: Armagnac

Like you expect from a beer that has matured on an Armagnac barrel, the aroma after pouring out is intense, complex and alcoholic which can point out the robust character of this special beer. You can smell some caramel and some biscuit odors. These come from the different malts and by fermenting on the wooden barrels. All this can also be found in the taste with some subtle nutty flavours, especially almond. The sweet aftertaste reminds of truffle.

Barrels:

provenance: France - Domaine Marquestau
Contained Armagnac for over 30 years.

Brew nº5: Sherry

The different flavors of this beer are manifested in a sublime order to achieve a harmonious yet complex taste sensation.

Besides the instantly recognizable dry sherry flavor there also is room for the fresh and spicy scents of vegetative raw celery and a green pepper character. This follows in subtle fruity aromas of peach and candied apricot, with an undertone of tea extracts. Finished with a nutty touch, reminiscent of broken walnuts. The mainly fresh flavors that make up the smell of the beer are masterfully supported by more robust flavors. In the flavor we can find the typical duality of balsamic, compromise between sweet and sour, and finally conclude with a notion of liquorice. But this story is not over; the aftertaste brings a perfect marriage between alcohol warming and soothing sweetness.

Barrels:
provenance: Spain - Jerez

Brew nº6: Port

The wonderful aroma of this beer is clearly indebted to the time that has matured in port casks.

This manifests itself primarily in a well-balanced marriage of hand fruity notes of apricot and dried raisins, complemented by full-flavored caramel and honey accents and also a range of flavors from the wood. These can be divided into several, perfectly complementary fractions, from the resinous spiciness of green wood, a creamy center with hints of vanilla to the deep flavors of mature oak and dried tobacco. Towards the end, the intensity of the flavor is greatly increased by the presence of alcohol and impressions of solvent, which is especially the fruitiness benefits and reminiscent of apricot and fresh fig. This assembly is perfectly finished with a long lasting, slightly syrupy aftertaste that leaves barely resting on the palate.

Barrels:
provenance: Portugal

Brew nº8: Sauternes

A description of the delicate aroma resembles a journey through a tropical greenhouse, the floral and fruity scents, the taster induced response.

Orange blossom, violets and honeysuckle go hand in hand with pear, peach, lime and mango. The complexity is complemented with notes of vanilla and clove and complemented by a notion of lavender. After this fresh bouquet comes the resounding of a pleasant and unexpected surprise. The onset of the beer is sweet and reminiscent of homemade marmalade, to be taken over by the alcohol and a refreshing spiciness consisting hints of fresh sage and anise. It is at this time that the vinous character of the beer reaches its fullness and this puts seemingly effortlessly into the aftertaste, which inevitably seems to be not to think of grapes, which proved that a successful marriage between wine and beer is certainly possible.

Barrels:
provenance: France
