The amazing wines of Williams Selyem

  • Found on every great restaurant wine list in the country!
  • Very hard to come by on a retail shelf and never at these astonishingly low prices!!
  • We are by far, the lowest price on Wine-Searcher on all of these wines.

SOLD OUT!
Don't hesitate on these as we only have less than 8 cases of each!

2008 Williams Selyem Chardonnay "Allen Vineyard"...$39.99
We are the lowest price on Wine-Searcher and compare to
$74.99 Brown Derby International Wine Center

The 2008 Chardonnay Allen Vineyard has a beautiful nose of nectarine, white peach, subtle honey, brioche, and orange rind. Full-bodied, with good acidity, beautifully pure fruit, a sumptuous texture and very good minerality, this wine should drink well for 3-4 years.
Rated 93/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2008 Williams Selyem Chardonnay "Heintz Vineyard"....$39.99
We are the lowest price on Wine-Searcher and compare to
$74.99 Brown Derby International Wine Center

"Bob Cabral’s Chardonnays sometimes get lost in the brilliant glare of his Pinot Noirs, but he has spent years exploring the rich, flamboyant side of the variety, with great success. This bottling represents William Selyem Chardonnay at its best. It’s ultra-decadent in apricot and pear flavors, with a strong oak influence, and yet an underlying minerality and fine acidity balance it so that it doesn’t tire as you drink. In fact, you want more."
Rated 96/100 The Wine Enthusiast

2008 Williams Selyem Chardonnay Russian River Valley Unoaked....$26.99
Compare to $59.99 Lincoln Fine Wines
$71.90 Wines at Work

"Williams Selyem is now playing the unoaked game, and with their fruit sources, wow. Most winemakers would kill to put oak onto these grapes. The wine is tremendous in pineapples, pears, papayas and kiwi fruit. It’s so rich, you won’t even notice the absence of caramel and all those oaky influences."
Rated 93/100 The Wine Enthusiast

2008 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast.......$34.99
Compare to $49.99 Brown Derby International Wine Center

"Bright red. Vibrant aromas of raspberry, licorice, rose and sandalwood. Juicy and intense, with very good sweetness and fleshiness to the red berry and spicecake flavors. The silky tannins arrive late. I like the high-pitched, spicy fruit character of the sappy finish."
Rated 91/100 International Wine Cellar

2008 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma County...$26.99
Compare to $59.99 Bernards Wine Gallery

"Although this is the least costly of the winery’s Pinots, it’s a lovely wine. Blending from a vast source of vineyards has given winemaker Cabral the ability to fill in divots of every kind. Gentle and dry, this rich, complex Pinot Noir has the elegance and style you expect from Williams Selyem."
Rated 92/100 The Wine Enthusiast

2008 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Westside Neighbors....$51.99
Compare $80.99 Pismo Wine Shop

"Saturated red. Captivating aromas of cherry-cola, pepper, Indian spices, cocoa powder and sandalwood. Then intense, spicy and penetrating in the mouth, with vibrant raspberry and wild strawberry flavors dominating. Finishes pungent, spicy and long, with a palate-staining whiplash of flavor. This calls for another five years of aging."
Rated 92/100  International Wine Cellar

2008 Williams Selyem Zinfandel Feeney Vineyard.....$39.99
Compare to $68.99 Wine.com
$74.99 Brown Derby International Wine Center

"The 2008 Zinfandel Feeney Vineyard has a beautiful nose of black raspberries, blackberry, and spice. Dark ruby purple, with high acid but enough body and richness to back up the aggressive acidification, this is an outstanding Zinfandel that should be drunk over the next 4-years, before the baby fat falls away and the acids take over."
Rated 90/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
"Opaque purple. Plum and dark berry aromas are complemented by smoky floral and spice qualities. Juicy and brisk, with complex, powerful flavors of boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and cola. Finishes with substantial but harmonious tannins that fade into the lush dark fruit on the close. I'd be in no hurry to drink this. This is the last vintage for this wine as the vineyard with these ancient vines has been replanted to pinot noir."
Rated 92/100 International Wine Cellar

Great Divide - seasonals.

Back in stock for the new season...

Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale...$8.99 /6pk

"Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is our tribute to the legendary “Wee Heavy” beers of Scotland. This malty, deep-ruby beauty features lots of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile, and a subtle warming character. Unlike its namesake, this beer only requires one hand, but it’ll still make you feel like nobility.

Food Pairings: Enjoy with:Pot roast with roasted vegetables, seared lamb shank with white beans, bread pudding. " -- Great Divide

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy
Beer Advocate style description
"Scotch Ales are strong ales, also known as "Wee Heavy." In the 19th century Scotland, they'd also be known as 160/-, a nomenclature based on the now obsolete shilling currency. Scotch Ales traditionally go through a long boil in the kettle for a caramelization of the wort. This produces a deep copper to brown in colored brew. Compared to Scottish Ales, they'll be sweeter and fuller-bodied, and of course higher in alcohol, with a much more pronounced malty caramel and roasted malt flavor. A low tea-like bitterness can be found in many examples. Best served in a "thistle" glass." -- Beer Advocate

Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti...$9.49 / 22oz
Rated A on Beer Advocate

"...is a new addition to the Yeti clan. A generous infusion of espresso adds yet another layer of complexity to this beer, combining with the vanilla oak character, intense roasty maltiness and bold hop profile to create a whole new breed of mythical creature. It’s official: You can now have Yeti with breakfast.

Food Pairings: Enjoy with: Breakfast burrito, eggs Benedict, hash browns, cheesecake, creme brulee." -- Great Divide

"You’ve got to love coffee to truly appreciate this phenomenal brew. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee. We’re actually not sure if this is some type of coffee cake or a beer. Either way you can drink this ale with a fork. Bargain red from Spain.

Great Spanish Grenache!

ia 2009 Garnacha
2009 IA Garnacha....$9.99
IA’s 2009 Garnacha is cherry red in color with a nose of spice box, violets, and black cherry that jumps from the glass. Sweetly-fruited, concentrated, and pleasure bent, this excellent value is meant for drinking over the next 3 years.
Rated 88/100 The Wine Advocate

2010 Vintage just in for the $7 Spanish white

Bargain White!

2010 La Valles Viura Chardonnay.....$6.99
90% Viura, 10% Chardonnay.
This wine comes from the appellation of Carinena in Spain. It leans towards the "modern" style of white wine from Spain---fresh, lively, no oak and delicious. Oh, and did a mention it is only $6.99!!!!!

Tasting Notes: Offers aromas of citrus fruit, pineapple and wild flowers. Dry and extremely refreshing on the palate.

Serve With: Ideal as an aperitif, or paired with salads or delicately-flavored seafood or white meat dishes.

2009 Pegau in stock now and a big score

Rated 95-97 from Robert Parker

2009 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee...$79.99
Under the estate Domaine du Pegau label, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is spending a longer time in barrel and foudre than usual. Consequently, I tasted through three separate foudres, all of which looked spectacular. The final blend will probably be about 80% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre and 2% other varietals. The color is a dense black/ruby (one of the more opaque 2009s I saw), and the powerful nose offers up aromas of licorice, smoked herbs, charcuterie, bouquet garni, roasted meats, Peking duck, kirsch, blackberries and cassis. An enormous success, this cuvee has come on like gang busters since I tasted it last year, and may eclipse the stunning 2007. Given its tannin profile, the 2009 will require 5-6 years of cellaring and should keep for 30-35 years. Could this be a modern day version of Pegau’s compelling 1989 Cuvee Reservee?

We are proud to introduce to St. Louis...

A new Champagne to St. Louis --  almost did not make it before the New Year...

A great grower Champagne with a production of less than 3,000 cases per year...(compare that to over 400,000 cases produced of Moet Chandon per year)

Roland Champion is a grower Champagne producer with all Grand Cru vineyards located in Chouilly.   "RM" is on the label for Grower Champagne

N.V. Champagne Roland Champion Brut, Blanc de Blancs...$49.99
Chouilly Grand Cru
The NV Brut is aged for minimum 30 months (twice as long as the legal minimum in Champagne). This cuvee is made from 100% Chardonnay and is produced from the free run juice only.

"Graphite, bread dough and citrus aromas segue to lemon, apple and floral notes as this remains focused and crisp. There's a nice chalky feel on the long finish. Drink now through 2014. 1,800 cases made. –BS"
Rated 90/100 The Wine Spectator
"Light gold with a fine bead. Highly floral bouquet displays pear, green apple, honeysuckle and chamomile, with a suave mineral undertone. Begins tight but gains weight and richness in the middle palate, offering pliant orchard fruit and baking spice flavors and a tangy bite of lemon zest. Nicely balanced and pure blanc de blancs with strong finishing cut and floral persistence. This is all grand cru juice, from Chouilly."
Rated 90/100 Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Very limited, they only make about 330 cases of Rose per year

NV Champagne Roland Champion Brut Rosé...$49.99 / 750ml
Chouilly Grand Cru
The current release is the result of the blend of 20% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir.   The color is obtained by adding 15% of red wine from Verneuil, aged at least 4 years, which gives this unique orange/salmon color.

"A delicate, subtle Champagne, delivering aromatic notes of mulling spices and yeast that accent the flavors of kirsch, bread dough, candied lemon zest and rose petal. This is finely tuned, with lively acidity and a minerally finish. Drink now through 2021. 330 cases made. –AN"
Rated 91/100  The Wine Spectator
"Bright orange. Aromas of blood orange, dried rose, allspice and minerals, with a subtle note of anise. Juicy and precise, with very good depth to its spicy red berry and citrus pith flavors. Finishes smooth and long, with excellent clarity and lingering spiciness."
Rated 91/10 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

"Champion is a small grower in Chouilly, in the Cotes des Blancs, an area known for fantastic chardonnay. This rosé — of which he makes only about 330 cases — includes 10 percent red wines (pinot noir, pinot meunier) to give it a pale, salmonlike color and a beguiling palate of cranberries, strawberries and currants. Wow. And yum."

2006 Wairau River Homeblock Pinot Noir....$15.99
Compare to $28 on The Wine Advocate
Marlborough, New Zealand
"The 2006 Homeblock Pinot Noir is very impressive, a ripe but well-defined nose with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, the palate displaying ripe tannins, a lithe, supple mouthfeel – very natural with cherry and wild strawberry on the earthy finish.

Pioneers of the Rapaura District in Marlborough having cultivated vines there back in 1978, Phil and Chris Rose supplied grapes to other growers before establishing Wairau River in 1991, their wines 100% estate grown from their five holdings with their own winery constructed in 2002 alongside a much-improved irrigation system."

Another great Grower Champagne --

Jean Laurent Blanc de Blancs....$49.99
"Revealing even more of a chalky/mineral character along with notes of wheat thins and citrus is the elegant non-vintage Brut Blanc de Blancs. This is an impressive, fuller-bodied offering than most wines of this genre. Still young and impressively endowed, it can be drunk now and over the next 5-7 years."
Rated 92/100 The Wine Advocate

Jean Laurent N.V. Brut Rosé...$49.99
"Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the non-vintage Brut Rosé (which spent six years on its lees) is a dry, austere, long, medium to full-bodied rosé that screams "serious." Flavors of strawberries, wet stones, and tomato skins are found in this impressively endowed, structured, well-delineated effort. Consume it over the next 2-4 years."

2011 Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout...$10.99
Our Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout is complex and strong, with rich chocolate and roasty flavors. The beer is brewed to have big malt flavor and hop bitterness to balance the sweetness of the high alcohol content. After primary fermentation and conditioning, the beer is transferred to freshly-emptied bourbon barrels and aged for several months before being carbonated and bottled.
In the 18th Century, Imperial Stout was first brewed in London for export to the court of Catherine II of Russia. The beer had to have a higher alcohol content to prevent freezing during transport. The process of aging beer in liquor barrels, however, is new; there is no tradition for this process, as beer and liquor production have traditionally been kept separate. We hand-select bourbon barrels from a micro-distillery in Bardstown, KY and transport the barrels immediately to St. Louis to ensure the barrels do not dry out before being filled with Imperial Stout.

2011 Schlafly Barrel Aged Barleywine....$10.99
Our Oak Aged Barleywine has a deep copper color with intense malt flavors and assertive hops for balance. Fermentation with American ale yeast allows the caramel-flavored malt to shine. After fermentation, the beer is infused with American-made Oak chips, where it is aged for several more months to develop its smooth, luscious character. The higher alcohol level in the beer allows the flavors to develop and mellow over time. Aging also creates raisin and port-wine characteristics in the finished beer.
Barleywine is a classic English strong ale. The term refers to a beer with the alcohol strength of wine and is often vintage-dated. Wood-aging is not a new brewing process: all beer was aged in wooden barrels before the use of stainless steel. Schlafly Beer is among several American breweries to age beer in wood, and is continually working with Missouri coopers to create different grades of wood toasting to get the best flavor during the aging process.

Here are some great liquor gifts you will not find anywhere else.  Give them something rare and special!!!

We are talking only 71-220 bottles produced
of each of these

We just received our second barrel of Buffalo Trace.  We tasted through barrels with our staff and customers to choose the perfect barrel.   We already have a third barrel ordered and on its way as it is flying off the shelf.  The whole barrel was bottled exclusively for The Wine and Cheese Place

Our own barrel of Elijah Craig 12 year Old.  Personally selected by The Wine and Cheese Place -- we tasted through barrels to pick this special one.   This is the first full barrel of Elijah Craig purchased in St. Louis!

We purchased the full quarter cask of this amazing Scotch.  Very rare Glen Grant 19 year old.   Since this is a quarter cask, there is more scotch to oak contact and the scotch tends to taste like it is aged longer than it actuually is....this one tastes like it was aged for 25 years or more.   It is rare to find a quarter cask aged for 19 years.   I am told we are the first to purchase a whole quarter cask in Missouri.  Only 71 bottles were produced and less than 36 bottles are left.

We purchased the first full barrel of Knob Creek Single Barrel 9yr old in St. Louis!  This one is almost gone.  We have maybe 12-20 bottles left between our stores.  Don't miss it!

Ultimate Scotch Glasses - these are flying off the shelf -- perfect for any scotch lover

Don't buy the packs at the chain stores, you know they were made months ago.  We use fresh beer in our packs, not old seasonals (from the past season) that you see in the other packs.  We have fresh IPAs from great breweries like Bells, Stone, Firestone Walker, Odell, Founders....

Very rare Johnnie Walker Blue Edition!
Johnnie Walker Blue King George V...$529.99 / 750ml
King George V from Blue Label was created to celebrate the Royal Warrant given to the Walker family in 1934 to mark their exceptional quality. This blend includes Port Ellen™, a highly prized malt whose distillery no longer exists.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label sets the standard, with layers and layers of flavor from hand-selected, rare casks from across the distilling regions of Scotland. Its flavors are influenced by the smoke of the west and the rich, sweet whiskies of the east.
King George V has more restraint and sophistication. The smoke is supplied from the unique, closed distillery of Port Ellen™ and is powerful, slow and resonant. It’s a slower whisky to evolve but has enormous depth.
The John Walker edition takes the learning and knowledge behind the idea of hand selection, and the rarity and elegance of small stocks from some closed distilleries. The layers of taste evolve and resonate with an elegant smoky finish.

"A lot of Cabernet at this price. Combines ripe, plump, plum, black cherry and black berry flavors in a rich, smooth, polished style, full bodied and firming nicely on the finish, where the tannins have a minerally edge. Drink now through 2021. 79,500 cases made. —J.L."
Rated 91/100 The Wine Spectator
Here is more info from James Laube --
Last week, in one of my regular weekly blind tastings, I came across a pair of wines that consumers will love....But one is also a wine that has to make Napa Cabernet producers nervous.    Beringer has another 2009 Knights Valley red, this one also a Cabernet, for $27, with 79,500 cases made.....damn good. These are the kinds of wines that get you excited about 2009 reds. So far there have been many exciting wines from this vintage, but also a few I've tried that show the difficulties of the growing season.
James Laube, The Wine Spectator

2010 Rombauer Chardonnay...$25.99
(net, no additional discount)
Compare to $32 at Rombauer.com
Golden yellow color with a pale hue. Seductive aromas of peach, melon, and citrus are balanced with honeysuckle and vanilla. On the palate, flavors of pears, peaches and melons are backed with lively acidity. A nice touch of vanilla-scented oak provides an added flavor dimension. The creamy palate has a lingering finish of melon and citrus fruit with a satisfying buttery complexity.

2008 Phelps Insignia Proprietary Red ....$134.99
(net, no additional discount)
Compare to $200 on Joseph Phelps.com
"The blend of the 2008 Insignia, 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, is not terribly different from the 2007. However, I suspect the production will be a lot less given the frost damage in early spring. The color is an inky/purple and the wine shows lots of cassis, blueberry, graphite and floral notes, good acidity, stunning concentration and purity, and a long finish. Another great success for Phelps, the 2007 and 2008 Insignias may be the best back-to-back vintages they have produced since 1995 and 1994. The 2008 has some tannins to resolve whereas the 2007 has already assimilated them. It appears the 2008 will require 2-3 years of bottle age, but should last for three decades."
Rated 95-97/100 Robert Parker The Wine Advocate

2010 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio....$17.99
(net, no additional discount)
"Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is the benchmark by which all other Pinot Grigios are judged. Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio was named the leading Italian wine and continues to be requested by name. Its crisp, elegant character makes it versatile for a wide array of cuisines. "The 2009 Chardonnay Private Reserve, which comes primarily from Napa’s Gamble Ranch site, is a bigger, richer, more nutty-styled Chardonnay revealing tropical fruit, butter, brioche and hazelnut characteristics. They backed off the oak in this cuvee, which results in more fruit, interest and personality."

"A very classy wine that combines rich, layered, complex fruit with a sense of delicacy and finesse. Full-bodied, but not heavy, offering detailed fig, melon, apple and spice. What's most impressive is the texture and length, with the flavors continuing to develop. Drink now through 2015. 12,500 cases made. –JL"
