The first review of TWCP Schlafly BBQ

I see, the first review on RateBeer for the
Schlafly / TWCP Bourbon Barrel Quad -- has arrived!

vyvvy (2819) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - FEB 18, 2012
Sampled at STL RB Gathering - First rating for this gem. Pours tawny brown/bronze with an off-white head. The aroma has rich caramel, toffee, vanilla, heavy toast, richness and smooth alcohol. Medium / full body that’s quite slick and sticky with semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts out with the aroma traits, but smoother with a lot of caramel, toffee and vanilla with nice warming alcohol. The finish has a nice warmth to it. The barrel aging seems to add toffee and vanilla to it and someone makes the alcohol more subdued and not as hot as the non-barrel aged version. Very well done with great results here.

The first review makes it up on BeerAdvocate now!

Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Quad - one of the 204 bottles brewed by Schlafly and aged in a Buffalo Trace Barrel for The Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton, MO.

This was served side by side with the regular version

A - pours a copperish dirty brown color, though it is lighter than the regular quad. An off white colored head sits atop it.

S - sweet molasses, butterscotch, and vanilla rise out of the glass and into my nose.

T - starts off with sweet caramel malts that quickly get pushed aside by some sweet butterscotch and molasses flavors. Some bourbon is accompanied by a lot of vanilla. Really nice!

M - creamy, smooth, with a little lighter body than the regular version

D - this is a damned good beer from Schlafly. The barrel aging did wonders for this beer. I was really glad to have this side by side with the regular; the two were almost indistinguishable from one another. Not to knock the regular quad, but this one is far superior. Thankfully I was able to get a bottle because I am really looking forward to revisiting this one. In the line up that was tasted last night this was one of the top beers I had, which says a lot.

It was as expected, very good, very easy to drink. Picked up the bourbon more than I expected. Had a sweetness to it. I'm not very good at descriptions, the group I sat with all agreed it's a bottle to share when you open it.

It was in a word, delicious. One of the best fresh barrel-aged beers I've had. Had some great barleywine characterisitcs I love but you could still pick the belgian yeast I thought. Definitely would not know it was 12%. Well done Paul and Schlafly. Looking forward to cellaring a bottle and see how it further develops.

Perennial Artisan Ales is a small-‐batch craft brewery dedicated to producing unique, premium beers. Our beers are brewed with the experimental, seasoned craft beer drinker in mind. Plan B is an aggressively dark, surprisingly dry, slightly spicy and fruity Belgian Strong Dark Ale. It was sour-mashed for two days and fermented on dried black currants. Notes of raisins, dry cocoa and a tart finish round out this nontraditional brew. Brewed in collaboration with Half Acre Beer Company in Chicago, Il., Plan B is uniquely named for the Huey Lewis and the News album Plan B.

O'Fallon B.D.S.

In stock at Forsyth now

O'Fallon B.D.S. Belgian Dark Ale....$11.99 / 22oz
We brewed this Belgian-style dark ale (ALC: 10% by Vol) in July 2010 and transferred it several weeks later into freshly drained Port Barrels.  For the next 11 months the beer worked in and out of the French oak barrels as the temperature in the brewery flucturated with the seasons.  In June 2011, we bottled the beer and put it aside to allow the flavors of the wood and teh beer to marry and mellow.  The result is a spicy-sweet with hints of raisins and caramel that mingle with the dark fruit notes and oak from the barrels.  We love this unique brew and hope you will too!

More info posted by Evan Benn on Hip Hops about the beer...
B.D.S. Belgian-Style Dark Ale • O'Fallon will release this limited-edition beer early next month in 22-ounce bottles. About 3,600 bottles were produced. Owens brewed a Belgian-style dark ale and let it age for almost a year in empty port barrels from Mount Pleasant Winery in Augusta. A sample tasted this month revealed flavors of dark fruit and tart cherries that mellowed any heat from the 10 percent alcohol content. A note on the name: B.D.S. stands for Belgian Dark Strong, which is the beer's base style. "Strong" is one of several words that the government does not allow to appear on beer labels, so O'Fallon uses the initials instead." -- Evan Benn

Update on Better Half

Just got word that it will not be today -- sorry, you can relax.  The beer is not even at the distributor yet.  They said there is still a chance they will get it today and we will have it tomorrow, but not sure yet.

Bottom line -- it will not be here today!
