Citrus, strawberry and kiwi fruit appear on the nose of the 2018 Cuvee Marina Rose. A pale pink blend of 35% Grenache, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, and 10% Counoise, it's medium-bodied and fine, elegantly structured and long, without any of the leafy Cabernet elements but showing some of that variety's hallmark restraint.

Like several other von Winning 2017s, this delivers cress-like cut and Sauvignon-like aromatics – here peppermint and cilantro – on top of the hedge flowers and hyacinth I find typical of this site. Firm but generously juicy, the palate bursts with bright lime and delivers an infusion of flowers and herbs. A mouth-shakingly vibrant and refreshing finish barely but delightfully hints at sweetness, and takes a surprisingly Grüner Veltliner–like turn in its stimulating persistence of cress and white pepper.

Smoky peppercorn, piquant peach kernel, nose-wrinkling ginger, boxwood and lemon peel as well as a toasty hint of oak make for a formidably forceful and complex nose. Happily, all of those aggressive notes are accompanied on a firm but subtly oily palate by juicy peach flesh and bright Meyer lemon. The finish activates the salivary glands and leaves the palate tingling and glowing in its evocation of salt, pepper, raw ginger and peach kernel. This ball of energy should prove fascinating to follow.

Peach kernel as well as toasted nuts and rye are piquantly signaled on the nose, accompanied by pungent green herbs; the gripping palate adds cheek-tugging persimmon. Fortunately, these are joined by an almost pulpy evocation of mirabelleand white peach, to which it seems (the wine being analytically almost bone-dry) as though sheer extract has conveyed a suggestion of sweetness. Iodine and crushed stone add mineral mystery to a profoundly layered, prodigious finish.

Old Amsterdam Cheese
The story of Old Amsterdam is a tale of passion and dedication. This characteristic cheese has its origins at the end of the nineteenth century, when a quest for the rich, authentic flavour of yore would lead to one of the best-loved cheese products ever made.
Lambert started experimenting with his own recipes. However, it proved difficult to get the taste and quality just right. Luckily the family refused to give up, and after years of perseverance and experimentation they finally discovered the unique lactic acid and special maturation process that brings the specific character of this mature cheese to life. The exact recipe is a well-guarded family secret
This special cheese was given a special name: Old Amsterdam. The word old relates to the mature flavour but also to the traditional character of the cheese, whereas the use of English is a proud declaration of the export quality of the cheese. The conspicuous black rind was chosen to emphasise the timeless character of the cheese.

Aged six months or more, Midnight Moon is a blushing, ivory-colored goat cheese that’s nutty and brown buttery up front with a long caramel finish. Similar to a Gouda, as Midnight Moon ages, protein crystals form and lend a slight crunch to the otherwise dense and smooth cheese. Know someone who (gasp!) doesn’t like goat cheese? 2014 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva Ovello...$59.98
The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is bright and piercing, as it so often is, and yet it also has more than enough fruit to fill out its mid-weight, energetic frame. Pine, mint, crushed rocks and sweet red plum build into the huge, piercing finish. The Ovello is another wine in this range that demands patience. Even in the early going it is super impressive. The 2014 s an unusually dense, packed Ovello. It should be terrific in another few years' time.

2014 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano...$59.98
One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. Readers will have to be patient, though.
