2018 Casas del Bosque Carmenere Reserva...$12.99
Deep red with a garnet hue. Aromas reminiscent of black cherries, plums and dry leaves are complemented with notes of chocolate and spice from the French oak barrels the wine was aged in. This Carménère is soft and plump, with supple tannins and good length.
Just a delightful mouthful of dark berry compote, plum, sweet red cherry, smoky vanilla and toasty oak spice. Excellent value under $17. Aged in oak barrel for 10 months.

2019 Domaine Saint Prefert Clos Beatus Ille Cotes du Rhone..$26.99
The cherry-scented 2019 Cotes du Rhone Beatus Ille also boasts intricate garrigue shadings, which bring welcome complexity and a slightly savory overtone to the bold, fruity aromas and flavors. It's full-bodied, supple and round in the mouth, with silky tannins on the licorice, rosemary and bay leaf-inflected finish. It should drink well for 3-4 years.
While well-heeled consumers fight over the limited volumes of the super 2018 Collection Charles Giraud and Reserve Auguste Favier, the smart money will be chasing the regular bottlings of red and white Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2019 Côtes du Rhône Beatus Ille is almost as good and.....an even better bargain.

30% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 40% Carignan
The vast Corbières zone in the Languedoc contains a little bit of everything, from classic warmth and generosity on the outskirts of Narbonne to wild mountain wines in the hinterland and concentrated, stony wines up on the border with the Agly Valley and the Roussillon. In a way, this blend of Carignan (a great Corbières speciality) with Syrah and Grenache brings all three styles together: flowers and fruit in the billowing, sweet-scented aromas and both generous fruits and something more stony and driving in the finely constructed palate. The tannins are present but unintimidating, and the acidity is unobtrusive and ripe. So easy to drink that you almost overlook those complexities -- but they'll keep you coming back for more.
