Great price for this amazing Sangiovese!
2021 Petrolo Boggina A Sangiovese...$54.99 - WAS $79.99
100% Sangiovese aged in amphora
Grapes are hand-harvested and then further selected on a sorting table. The wine undergoes a two-week open-air fermentation with indigenous yeasts in two terracotta amphorae of 300 and 500 liters. The amphorae are then hermetically sealed, and the wine is left on its skins for eight months. After this eight month period, the skins are removed, and aging continues in amphorae for another five months. The natural porosity of the terracotta allows for a slow ingress of oxygen into the wine, avoiding excess reduction. No sulfites are added during this process, as the extended contact of the wine with the skins establishes a natural level of protection against oxidation.
The 2021 Boggina A, 100% Sangiovese in amphora, is brilliant. Medium in body and wonderfully translucent, the 2021 captures all the magic of the year in its finely cut, chiseled personality. Once again, Luca Sanjust and his team have turned out a stunning, vivid Sangiovese that is a far cry from earlier vintages, when this wine was often much less pure.Rated 96/100 Vinous Media
Sanguine, earthy and alive on the nose, with the warm density of dried cherries and dried cranberries shot through with tang of gunpowder and black pepper. Orange zest and more pepper and metal lift red cherries and red plum skin off the palate, which seems to vibrate with energy and acid. Immediately delicious, with the promise of yet more elegance to come.

This is Sangiovese that has been fermented and aged in amphorae made with clay from Impruneta, Tuscany. It sees eight months of skin contact. The Petrolo 2021 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A was born in what vintner Luca Sanjust describes as a difficult year for farming but one that ultimately gave great results. The wine shows an especially tight and firm character that becomes almost Burgundian with time, with floral notes and blood orange. Sulfites are reduced to a minimum in order to give the lift and punchiness that works so well.
