Two Enchanting Reds from Amador County CA

 

The winery rep for these two brands was in town recently and these two wines were unreal! 2015 is current release for both. The winery sells them when they are ready to drink. 

Terre Rouge and Easton Wines was founded in the late 80s by husband and wife team Bill Easton and Jane O’Riordan. Bill is one of the original Rhône Rangers and pioneered the Rhône varietals in the Sierra Foothills. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhône Rangers in 2016.

2015 Terre Rouge Ascent Syrah...$94.99

Each year Bill crafts his top Syrah named ASCENT from several Sierra Foothills vineyard sites ranging up to 3,000 feet in elevation. All of the grapes are grown in granite and volcanic-based soils. Only 8 barrels are produced and spend 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels before bottle aging. These vines were grafted from Chapoutier Hermitage cuttings!

Smoky, earthy anise and dark-chocolate aromas give way to concentrated and layered black-plum, clove and blackberry flavors as this full-bodied wine expands on the palate. Its texture is richly tannic and the mouthfeel is generous, prolonging the lush flavors on the finish. A perennial standout, this wine has proven it can age well. Best after 2025. — Jim Gordon

Thomas Rivers Brown is the most decorated winemaker in Napa these days. He has made wines for Schrader, Round Pond, Revana, Outpost, and many others. Dark, complex and structured, the 2021 vintage delivers an unforgettable Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon profile that comes from having access to some of the finest vineyards in the Valley. The wine displays a completely opaque dark purple hue in the glass. Densely layered aromatic notes suggest plum reduction, quince, oolong tea, and cedar bark. The palate experience has an interwoven dark fruit core with lively peripheral notes that lean more towards brambly red fruit. Notes of blackberry paste, leather and cocoa nib dominate the mid palate while the lengthy finish expresses brighter notes of raspberry, dark cherry and blueberries. 2021 Philippe de Rothschild Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva...$20.99

Escudo Rojo is the Spanish translation of the German “Rote Schild” meaning Red Shield. In 1999, the encounter between Chilean soil and Bordeaux expertise gave rise to Escudo Rojo, a branded wine worthy of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild name, synonymous with the high standards of a great winemaking tradition. Vines were first introduced into Chile in the 16th century by the Spanish Conquistadors and their religious orders who needed wine to celebrate mass. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vines were imported from France in the 19th century in order to make finer wines.

The Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva is a fine blend of traditional grape varieties grown in our own vineyard and in rigorously selected parcels by our partners. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc grapes are selected by our technical team and vinified in the Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile bodega. Year after year, that subtle combination yields a round, complex and concentrated wine with attractively expressive fruit.

A pretty nose with an array of strawberries and black cherries. Some sweet spices, chocolate and grilled herbs, too. Juicy and medium- to full-bodied on the palate with firm, very fine-grained tannins. Generous, ripe but fresh. 39% cabernet sauvignon, 39% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc, 9% syrah and 7% petit verdot. Drink now or hold.

Tiza means ‘chalk’ - an ode to the soil. The one-foot-deep topsoil is composed of sand and red clay, blended with chunks of pure chalk. Another layer of chalk mixed with sand lies under the soil.  The best Cencibel (Tempranillo) vineyards are selected for Tiza. Most are bush vines at 700 meters above sea level with an average age of 30+ years.

This 100% Tempranillo is fermented like a Rhone style red, with whole berry skin contact. Juicy, clean & fresh, with aromas and flavors of ripe black fruit, blueberries, black cherries and hints of dark chocolate. Full bodied with a solid texture, velvety tannins and a slightly sweet, creamy finish. Tiza Tempranillo is a perfect example of bang for the buck!

This Tempranillo pairs well with charcuterie (like Jamón Serrano), Manchego cheese and paella – just think ‘Tapas and Tempranillo’!

Deep purple in appearance with youthful crimson hues. Lifted ripe berry fruit aromas, with hints of earth, pepper and dark chocolate complimented by sweet red berry fruit flavours with spice and a silky tannin finish. This wine goes perfectly with red meat dishes, particularly beef. Managing Director, Matthew Nugan, loves to have the Third Generation Shiraz with a steak, but it also goes terrifically with spaghetti bolognaise. Stored in noble, strong Limousin oak barrels for 2-3 years, the Calvados gradually develops subtle aromas and a beautiful color, in a mysterious alchemy. The brandy breathes through the wood over the years, slowly losing its "fire" and progressively digesting the tannins of the wood. The result is a beautiful amber color; fine and fruity aromas with well integrated toasty notes. It is well-balanced and fresh in the mouth.

"The history of Calvados Morin began in 1889 in La Haye de Calleville in the Risle Valley, before Pierre Morin succeeded his father and transferred their small family business to Brionne, and from there finally to Ivry la Bataille, a charming small Norman town in the Eure Valley. Calvados Morin was set up in 1945 in the former facilities of the Thélème Distillery, a famous liquor at that time. The main advantage of the establishment is its ageing facilities, which are unique in Normandy, particularly its large underground cellars, where several hundred small oak barrels containing the precious Brandy can be stored. Today, the company is run by Mr. Viry, father and son, who succeeded Pierre Morin, and continue to work in the footsteps of their founder. Crafted in American oak, Silver Oak Cabernets are aged in new and once-used barrels—but what happens to the used barrels? Reclaimed staves have appeared in everything from a salmon recipe to a wedding band. In celebration of our 50th anniversary, a batch of used 59-gallon wine barrels took the journey to Jalisco, Mexico, and the result is finally ready to share.

We are proud to share in this latest artisanal tequila collaboration for the Maestro Dobel 50 collection, a label founded in 2017 in honor of Dobel CEO Juan Dobel Beckman’s 50th birthday and other half-century milestones. Finished and infused with flavor from American oak barrels, the Dobel 50 Tequila Silver Oak edition is a small production, luxury Extra Añejo tequila handcrafted using 100% Blue Weber Agaves.
