Our goal with Merci 40th Anniversary Blend was to bring back characteristics of one of our favorite Merci blends - specifically blend #2 when we used the enhanced complexity of our funkier, more wild, wild ale base and then softened that with selected oak barrels of Oude Fermier. For the 40th Anniversary blend, with this concept in mind, we pulled together pieces that include a funky wild ale base from our Coexpressionalism-inspired stock, a puncheon which held Blended 2017 and a puncheon of Oude Fermier which was uncharacteristically more Brett-forward than we normally see. This lovely puncheon was beautiful and incredibly unique, and it provided the last attribute to the final blend for a beer that we anticipate will age as gracefully as Merci Blend #2.

Labeled La Peroline in markets outside the United States, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Chavaroche (a barrel sample, from the lieu-dit of the same name) is another terrific wine from this tiny estate. It's a bit more complex and herbal-stemmy than the other bottlings, but it's also floral and tea-scented, with baskets of purple raspberries on the nose as well. Medium to full-bodied, it's the silkiest, most complete of the three cuvées at this address, while still boasting ample concentration and length and plenty of ripe tannins. Give it at least another 5 years in a cool cellar.

This should be terrific; it just needs a good 5+ years.

Full-bodied but restrained, elegant and reserved, it's the most Bordeaux-like of these three prior vintages, still in need of additional aging.
