In stock at Kirkwood and online! Two new wines from Armenia!

Armenia is the quite literally the birthplace of wine. The oldest known winery was discovered here, and it dates back to over 6,000 years ago! While Armenia has a long grape growing tradition, production of table wine was halted during the era of the Soviet Union, when they were forced to focus solely on Brandy (neighboring Georgia became the center of wine production during this time). When they gained independence in 1991, the winemaking industry was revitalized, and modern production methods + international distribution are making Armenia a rising star once again.Areni is a thick skinned grape that was never subjected to phylloxera, and always grafted on its own roots, making it a hearty, one of a kind grape variety. It has the elegance of Pinot Noir, but the structure of Syrah. The Voskehat is a medium body white wine akin to a bone-dry Chenin Blanc or French Chardonnay. These wines are outstanding for the price point!
2018 Zulal Areni Red...$19.99 / 750ml
Areni is Armenia’s leading red grape variety, capable of making energetic wines full of bright fruity flavors. Zulal, meaning ‘pure’ in Armenian, was created to express the purest characteristics of Armenia’s indigenous grape varieties grown in volcanic soils at high elevation. The 2018 Areni is a classic expression of the ancient Areni variety.
The 2018 Areni is an aromatic wine with notes of red cherries, plums and notes of pepper. On the palate it’s medium-bodied, with refreshing acidity and concentrated flavors of berries and spices.
2020 Zulal Voskehat White...$19.99 / 750ml
Voskehat is an ancient white variety indigenous to Armenia. It results in fuller bodied wine with flavors of stone fruits, flowers and delicate notes of herbs.
This is a dry, medium-to-full bodied wine with aromas of ripe apple, pear and honeysuckle balanced by a crisp, savory herb backbone. Pale golden yellow in color, it has a long finish and a pleasing minerality.
