2019 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling

2019 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling...$51.99
The 2019 Polish Hill Riesling boasts hints of baby powder and lime alongside green apple and mint on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a pristine, almost watery feel on the palate, but it simultaneously delivers fascinating intensity of flavor and tremendous length, with a gentle, softly dusty texture on the finish. It should easily cellar for more than a decade.

Grosset is one of Australia's most famous producers of Riesling and was an early protagonist in the switch to screwcaps, but the winery also turns out outstanding wines from Chardonnay (purchased from the Adelaide Hills) and blended reds. The vineyards are certified organic, and additives (with the exception of sulfur) are strictly verboten. Vineyard manager Mark Groat took me around the vineyards, where under-vine mulching is being used to control weeds and retain soil moisture. Aside from being organic, the entire operation is carbon neutral—a reflection of owner Jeffrey Grosset's commitment to sustainability. Look for a new barrel-aged Riesling bottling in the near future.
