"GG" - Grosse Gewachs

"GG" - Grosse Gewachs
(Great Growths of Germany)
For a wine to be labeled Grosse Gewachs the fruit must come from one of Germany's Grosse Lage Vineyards,a designation used only for Germany's very best vineyard sites - small, carefully demarcated areas with clear site-specific characteristics. Yields on these sites are limited to 50hl/ha. These wines are fermented to dry and represent the finest expression of Dry Riesling coming from Germany. Very little is produced and even less gets exported so we are very excited to be able offer these amazing wines from Schafer Frohlich.

2014 Schafer Frohlick Felseneck Rieslng GG...$25.99 / 375ml
Lowest price on Wine-Searcher is $64.95 / 750ml
The 2014 Felseneck Riesling trocken GG is very clear, bright, pure and fine in the herbal and salty-flavored nose. Piquant, dense and juicy on the palate, this is concentrated yet filigreed Riesling with typical slate spiciness and a filigreed structure.
Rated 96/100 James Suckling
The Fröhlichs’ signature site has never, in my experience, faced such formidable competition from their other Grosse Gewächse (which are also more numerous than ever, thanks to the post-2012 inclusion of Stromberg) but it rises to the occasion with the greatest clarity, delicacy, refreshment and refinement of this year’s amazing collection. The aromas are less effusive and the flavors more restrained than in several of its siblings, but what a wealth of subtleties! Juicy apple and white currant are shimmeringly infused with mint, wintergreen, iris, and crystalline, stony, iodine-like as well as mouthwatering saline mineral notes, ushering-in a near-endless finish.

2016 Schafer-Frohlich Riesling Felsenberg GG...$53.99
Lowest price on Wine-Searcher is $79.00 / 750ml
Another amazing dry riesling from this producer. This wine marries richness and enormous lemony freshness, ending with a starburst of herbal-mineral character. Drink now or hold.

From the earliest of the grand crus, the Schlossböckelheimer, 2016 Nahe Riesling Felsenberg "GG" opens with a fascinating, fine and complex bouquet with spicy/vegetal, herbal and stony aromas, whereas the fruit is subtle, very clear and precise. On the palate, this is a round and juicy Felsenberg that reveals intense fruit, with ripe but fine acidity and a long, well-structured and powerful finish. This is a warmer type of Riesling, coming from a cru that Tim harvests with respect to the berry skins, which should still have buoyancy since the grapes of the Felsenberg tend to become overripe in a very short time, even within a day.

2017 Schafer-Frohlich Riesling Stromberg GG...$53.99
Lowest price on Wine-Searcher is $64.99 / 750ml
It's hard to imagine how a riesling could have a more northerly personality than this cool, delicate and very elegant wine. Great balance and very long, saline finish. From a forgotten, top site that Tim Fröhlich reactivated in 2012. Drink or hold.
