Ratcheting up the level of complexity and terroir character is the 2012 Proprietary Red Gravel Bed, which is made primarily from Bordeaux varietals planted in deep alluvial gravel beds. As it says on the back label, they have been making wine in Sonoma for over 100 years, so they know a thing or two about grape sources. This wine’s dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by pure, full-bodied, blueberry, blackberry, cherry and blackcurrant fruit notes intermixed with hints of sweet earth and wet pebbles. With sweet tannins as well as admirable opulence and richness, this superb Bordeaux blend can be drunk over the next 15-20 years.
