A great wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (just under 10,000 cases produced) possesses a fragrant bouquet of sweet black currants, crushed rocks, earth and background oak. Full-bodied and dense, with Montelena’s typical power, tannin and reserved nature, this is a big, rich, formidably endowed red that requires 4-5 years of cellaring. That in itself is atypical of this exuberant, flamboyant vintage. Given this cuvee’s past history, this 2007 should age for 30+ years.

"The 2007 Nit de Nin is a blend of 60% Garnacha and 40% Carinena aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak. Dense purple-colored, it gives up a soaring and complex bouquet of Asian spices, mineral, incense, espresso, black cherry, and plum. Silky-textured while combining elegance with power, this full-bodied effort will evolve for another 3-4 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2027. Nit de Nin is the personal project of Ester Nin, the vineyard manager of Clos Erasmus. It is a 4-barrel cuvee sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines from Mas d’En Cacador in the village of Porrera."

The 2008 Dominus may eclipse the 2007, but it may just be a matter of style. The 2007 Dominus, the quintessential model of haute couture, is pure elegance exhibiting a seamless integration of wood, tannin, alcohol and acidity as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, new saddle leather, sweet kirsch, black currant and plum fruit and a notion of licorice. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years.
