The Whiskey: Aged Bourbon + Rye

Our vision for this Limited Release was to balance the sweet sophistication of the French Oak with the woodsy nature of Mizunara in a well-aged Bourbon and Rye.

We started with the French Oak, which we wanted to heavily influence the bourbon. After the barrels had aged for five years, we inserted medium toasted French Oak wood “necklaces” into the original American White Oak barrels, allowing it to rest for twice as long as our portfolio French Oak Bourbon. We then blended the 5-year finished bourbon with 7-year Bourbon and 8-year Rye to advance the confluence of flavors. Finally, we added lightly toasted Mizunara wood staves to the whiskey blend for a much shorter amount of finishing time to delicately introduce its character of sandalwood and Oriental incense.

The Story: Rich in Culture

Through the Lexington (KY) Sister Cities Commission, RD1's hometown has sister cities in Shinhidaka, Japan, and Deauville, France. In this Limited Release, we bring together America’s Native Spirit with wood from both countries. This unique expression weaves the beautiful Sister Cities’ cultures into a rich patchwork of inspiring flavor.

The Experience: Subtle then Complex

Aroma : Incense followed by floral and citrus notes

Palate : Sandalwood, rye spice and baking spices delicately meet sweet oak, dark chocolate and red fruit in a silken mouthfeel

Note: this is full Sakura cask, not just a barrel head. The Sakura (Cherry Blossom) is locally grown in Kumamoto close to the distillery. The whisky is matured in Brandy and Sherry casks. The Sakura gives a rich color and soft Oak spice influence to the whisky. A great example of Japanese terroir, this whisky is made with locally grown rice, is locally distilled, matured, and finally finished in the locally grown Oak barrels.

One of the best Morgon wines each year. A store favorite!

The 2024 Morgon that I tasted from barrel came from the first and third pickings. There is plenty of vivacious white-tipped strawberry and Morello cherry on the nose. The palate is lively and very citrus-driven with red cherries, orange zest, noticeably "punchy" acidity and a chalky finish.

The 2023 Morgon Côte du Py comes from several parcels of granite and schistous soils with many centurion vines. This has a wonderful, very complex bouquet with exquisite delineation: crushed stone filters through dark berry fruit alongside hints of ash and light stony scents. The sapid and vivacious palate has filigree tannins, a silver thread of acidity, and a touch of cracked black pepper towards the long finish. This is one of the best Morgons you can buy…but that's old news.

The aromas here are dense with plum, fig, ripe mulberry and hints of earth, menthol, spice and smoke. Impressive density and weight on the palate lead the wine to a lingering finish. Eminently ageworthy, this has the most concentration and depth of the range. Labelled MMXXII, the cuvée is produced with grapes from the domaine's oldest vines (more than a century old) in the climats of Côte de Py and Douby, given a maceration of up to 36 days and nine months ageing in used casks.
