Sadly we were not able to host Carlo at the shop in March but he was gracious enough to offer to host a Zoom Happy Hour tasting on Saturday May 9th for us. We are offering a few different packages for the tasting which will include at least 1 bottle of wine and the Zoom Code. Hopefully this will not be the new normal forever but it seems to be the new normal for now and we are thrilled to have Carlo host the first ever Wine and Cheese Place Virtual Tasting/Happy Hour. The plan will be to join Carlo Mondavi with a bottle or three of Raen Pinot Noir at 4pm Central May 9th for a Happy Hour tasting and question and answer session. In 2012, Founder and CEO Caitlin Landesberg started her search for the perfect beer to cheers with friends after long trail runs in and around San Francisco… but didn’t find a beer that fit the bill when it came to celebrating her athletic lifestyle and diet. In late 2015, Caitlin left her job to pursue Sufferfest Beer Company full-time and officially launched her beer to market in May 2016. Our friends in Iowa recently filled some ex-Templeton Rye barrels with fresh Vermont maple syrup. After two months, they were emptied and filled again with straight rye whiskey. Two more months and, voila! Templeton Rye Maple Cask Finish was born. We were lucky enough to procure these special barrels and some additional maple syrup barrels, so we concocted a monster of a blend. Pouring a deep amber, this celebration of spicy rye malt, rye whiskey and maple syrup finishes with a delightful, boozy sweetness.

Though many Piesporters and Bernkastelers of dubious quality are available in the market, Johannes and his team work hard to ensure a level of quality and continuity from vintage to vintage, while keeping these wines inexpensive and serving as a great introduction to Mosel Riesling.

Although this consistently outstanding cuvée, designed exclusively for the US market, was dedicated to legend-in-his-lifetime cellarmaster Hans-Günter Schwarz, who helped blend its inaugural 2014 installment, he professed to never having seen the label nor assessed a finished bottling until he tasted this 2017 along with me. Shrubby scents of boxwood and rosemary mingle with dried apricot and zesty lime, anticipating the pungent initial attack and subsequent grip with which this seizes the palate. Happily, there is a wealth of primary juiciness. Schwarz captured the whole point of “Winnings,” stylistically speaking, when he called attention to “the discreet residual that you detect on the finish, not for the sake of sweetness, but because it prolongs the fruit and lends harmony to the whole flavor profile [speichert den Frucht und gibt diesen ganzen Geschmacksbild eine Harmonie].” Put punningly, for an entry-level bottling, this displays “improbable innervation [unwahrscheinliche Geschmacksnerve].” (In German, taste buds are Geschmacksnerven.)

On the nose the EINS-ZWEI-DRY shows very pleasant fruit and rich yeasty notes. Nuances of peach and apricot; ripe apples and a hint of carambola. The delicate and lively acidity is supported by ripe mirabelle and is an outstanding example of the terroir. With a crisp finish, that leaves your taste buds wanting more, this wine is just asking to be drunk over and over again. The EINS-ZWEI-DRY has a really good extract, what makes this wine suitable for storage – that´s pretty remarkable for an entry-level. We think it´s a nice aperitif with oysters, it´s pretty delicious with Sashimi and even matches deliciously with smoked fish.
