The West Sonoma Coast or Extreme Sonoma Coast has certainly planted it’s flag lately as one of the worlds best spots for growing Pinot Noir. We are huge fans of West Sonoma Coast Pinot at The Wine and Cheese Place and with the addition of Steve Kistler’s Occidental Winery to our stable we thought it would be fun to have a little blind tasting competition.
We will be featuring 3 of our favorite West Sonoma Coast Pinot along with world class Pinot from Burgundy, Russian River and Willamette Valley

2023 Occidental “Freestone-Occidental” Pinot Noir $74.99
A tightly focused beam of bitter cherry, damson plum and raspberry coulis streams through this red, with mouthwatering cut in the form of ocean breeze minerality that runs throughout. Iris and rose hip notes fill in the background as the long, piercing finish shows a remarkably pure and unadorned feel. A high-definition Pinot. Drink now through 2035. 3,650 cases made.
Rated 95/100 The Wine Spectator

2023 Raen “Royal St Robert” Pinot Noir...$79.99
An amazingly complex, dynamic wine that demands your attention from the first sniff to the lingering finish. Aromas of redwood forest, rosemary, purple flowers and black cherries, then black tea, pomegranate, dark cherry, dried raspberry and wild mushroom flavors. Fine-grained moderate tannins and crunchy acidity give it such a firm backbone. Drink now or hold.
#2 Wine of the Year!
Rated 99/100 James Suckling

2022 Peay Scallop Shelf Pinot Noir...$86.99
Scallop Shelf is an estate cuvée assembled by winemaker Vanessa Wong. The driver for the wine is the Pommard clone selection (typically 60%). The 2022 vintage is lushly fruited blue and red fruits and clove spice. 2022 was an excellent vintage pushed by a severe heat spike in September around Labor Day. The Scallop Shelf was picked at the front end of the heat spike and Andy Peay feels there is a fullness of fruit expression. This wine shows a touch more heft, but the acids didn't drop, allowing the wine to retain an elegant florality. Smoky spice aromas lift red and blue fruits. The palate's fleshy cherry fruits don't mute the wine's elegance or linearity as blood orange zest and Chinese five spice lift the fruit into ethereal heights of savoury spice.

2022 Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots...$105.99
The deeply-coloured wine from the old vines in the Lafarge parcel boasts a ripe plummy fruit in 2022, yet there is a saline mineral side and a hint of savoury, gamey complexity. This delicious wine has a nervy tension and the density and length to age nicely in the cellar. The grapes come from the three-quarters of a hectare planted relatively high on the slope – some are 70 years of age; they are destemmed and gently fermented to produce this exquisite wine.

2023 Pont Neuf La Source Pinot Noir Russian River...$79.99

TWCP Favorite Not Rated because of miniscule production
The 2023 “La Source” Pinot Noir is a classically styled, terroir-driven expression from Silver Eagle Vineyard atop Stoetz Ridge, where the Russian River meets the Sonoma Coast just five miles from the Pacific. Brilliant in the glass with deep violet highlights, the wine combines a silky, weightless texture with striking transparency and lift. Aromas of plum and cassis unfold alongside woodsy truffle notes, violets, and warm cinnamon, reflecting a cool, even ripening season that delivered exceptional color, purity, and complexity. Rigorously limited yields and Vosne-Romanée clonal material contribute to the wine’s depth and structure.

2022 Soter Mineral Springs Pinot Noir Willamette Valley $79.99
The tension and linearity of this wine are incredible, as fresh, vivid fruit flavors ride an electric wave of bracing acidity from the first whiff to the long, lingering finish. Layers of haunting mushroom, iron and bay leaf nuances meet cranberries, sour cherries, rhubarb and black tea flavors that linger and echo after the last sip. An impeccable wine for drinking now through at least 2032.
