Syrah (Shiraz)
Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a popular red wine. Though the spiritual homeland of this red grape is France, Syrah has been planted throughout the world to great success. It expresses itself differently depending on the climate, soil and regional style, though certain characteristics remain the same.
Syrah is typically bold and full-bodied, with aromatic notes of smoke, black fruit and pepper spice. Stylistically, it can be round and fruity, or dense and tannic. And in warmer New World regions like Australia, Syrah might be called Shiraz. Whatever the name, Syrah/Shiraz offers a style for everyone.... It has a range of flavors, from smoke, bacon, herbs, red and black fruits, white and black pepper, to floral violet notes. When aged in oak, Syrah takes on flavors of vanilla and baking spice..." - The Wine Enthusiast

2019 Te Mata Hawke's Bay Syrah....$19.99
Te Mata's estate Syrah is once again a lucid, approachable beauty. This vintage is more layered than the previous one, unraveling flavors and textures. First, bright cherry and plum arise, then graphite, savory herbs and flowers chime in. The palate is linear and taut, with leathery tannins, crisp acidity and tart fruit. There's a savory edge to the finish. It's a serious yet highly drinkable Syrah, especially when paired with roast lamb.

2020 Tensley Syrah Santa Barbara County....$26.99
The 2020 Syrah Santa Barbara County is inky, vibrant and so expressive. Blueberry jam, chocolate, licorice and spice all race out the glass. Exotic and opulent to the core, the Santa Barbara Syrah is a fabulous introduction to the vintage.

2019 Baron Ermengaud Faugeres Rouge...$26.99
80% Syrah
0% Grenache, 5%, Mourvèdre and 5% Carignan
"Les Crus Faugères is the only cooperative in this appellation, managing 2,223 acres or nearly half of Faugères’ vines. It puts out a vast array of labels, including Mas Olivier, also recommended here, but Baron Ermengaud was the standout for both its 2019 and 2018 reds. Mostly syrah (80 percent), with grenache, carignan and mourvèdre, all of it hand-harvested off schist parcels, the 2019 shines in its combination of earthiness and brightness. Lively acidity and herbal notes give it a just-picked freshness that energizes the red fruit; the clarity allows a clear view of the earth, too, in shades of schist and iron. It tastes like it’s from a place, with a sense of sun and garrigue that’s transporting."

As life-forces stir, a connection is born and a personality created. The Quickening celebrates the vivifying power of nature. This is the Barossa reimagined. An exuberant outpouring of energy, captured within a sculptured framework that reflects the rugged yet beautiful landscape of its conception. A deliciously vibrant style of Barossa Shiraz with succulent raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, hints of spice and elegant, glossy texture.

2017 Tait The Ball Buster Proprietary Red..$19.99
77% Shiraz (Syrah)
15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot
Made in the same full-on style that proprietor Bruno Tait has been pursuing since its first vintage in 2001, Tait's 2017 The Ball Buster Proprietary Red is a blend of 77% Shiraz, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. Mint and baking spices lead the way, backed by a big mouthful of blackberries and black cherries. Full-bodied yet supple, it's spicy and rich, with lingering notes of mixed berries and spice on the finish. Despite weighing in at 15.9% alcohol on the label, it doesn't seem hot or overripe—an achievement in itself, but past vertical tastings suggest that this wine can develop nicely for a decade or more.
