Always Forward, the exploratory SMaSH IPA series, is back. This time with 100% grist of the fantastic British malt, Golden Promise, and 100% hopped with a particularly pungent 2020 crop of Galaxy.
As much as this is a learning experience for you, the drinker, to understand how different hops and grain interact and change the beer’s flavors and aromatics, it’s a huge experience builder for me to notice how the beer changes with just simple ingredients, which will play out for the better in later beers. Always improving, always forward.
This batch exhibits straight up wine and berry notes with the crack of the can from the galaxy hops with nuanced limeade flavors throughout the first sip. The grain adds a sweeter body than normal, fuller in mouthfeel, but substantially more yogurt-y with hints of nuts and earth, that play so well with the southern hemisphere hop.
I hope you enjoy exploring these stripped down flavor experiences as much as I do and take away a deeper and more valuable catalogue to understand just a little bit more about beer and its ingredients.
