TEMPRANILLO SAMPLER PACK

TEMPRANILLO
Also known as Tinta del País, Aragonez, Tinta Roriz, Tinto de Toro, Tinto Fino, Cencibel, and Ull de Llebre

Tempranillo is a black grape variety widely grown to make full-bodied red wines in its native Spain. Its name is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano ("early"), a reference to the fact that it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. Tempranillo has been grown on the Iberian Peninsula since the time of Phoenician settlements. It is the main grape used in Rioja, and is often referred to as Spain's noble grape. The grape has been planted throughout the globe's wine regions.

In 2015, Tempranillo was the fourth most widely planted wine grape variety worldwide with 232,561 hectares (574,670 acres) under vine, of which 87% was in Spain where it is the most planted red grape variety.

Tempranillo is an early ripening variety that tends to thrive in chalky vineyard soils such as those of the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. In Portugal, where the grape is known as Tinto Roriz and Aragonez, it is blended with others to produce port wine. -- Info from Wikipedia

Tiza means ‘chalk’ - an ode to the soil. The one-foot-deep topsoil is composed of sand and red clay, blended with chunks of pure chalk. Another layer of chalk mixed with sand lies under the soil. The best Cencibel (Tempranillo) vineyards are selected for Tiza. Most are bush vines at 700 meters above sea level with an average age of 30+ years.
This 100% Tempranillo is fermented like a Rhone style red, with whole berry skin contact. Juicy, clean & fresh, with aromas and flavors of ripe black fruit, blueberries, black cherries and hints of dark chocolate. Full bodied with a solid texture, velvety tannins and a slightly sweet, creamy finish. Tiza Tempranillo is a perfect example of bang for the buck!
This Tempranillo pairs well with charcuterie (like Jamón Serrano), Manchego cheese and paella – just think ‘Tapas and Tempranillo’!

The largest volume of the Muga winery is for the red blend 2016 Reserva, a wine that is sold as 2016 Crianza in Spain (for commercial reasons). This has the Muga style and the imprint of the cool and fresh 2016 vintage, one of the best vintages of recent years. 2016 is also a year of harmony and freshness that reminds me a little of the 2010. But the Muga family thinks it's somewhere between 2010 and 2011, because for them 2011 is not so warm, even if it generally produced quite ripe wines. It has a mixture of red and black fruit with sweet spices that are very integrated and in harmony. The palate is silky and clean, and the tannins are round and gentle. A delicious Reserva/Crianza.

2017 Booker Vineyard Tempranillo...$49.99
100% Tempranillo
Along with Epoch, Jensen makes one of the finest Tempranillo out there. The 2017 Tempranillo offers terrific blue fruits, pepper, violets, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, with remarkable purity, plenty of classic Tempranillo tannins, and a great finish. It has upfront charm given its balance, yet I suspect it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age.
