Mourvedre

"I know we have been posting a lot about the wines of Xavier Vignon lately and with good reason, they are fantastic. I wanted to take a moment to highlight one particular wine of his that I have found particularly compelling. Vignon's 2016 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes is certified Agriculture Biolgique (the EU equivalent of Organic Certification) and while that alone sets it apart what really strikes me is the varietal breakdown on this amazing Cotes du Rhone. Featuring a much higher percentage of Mourvedre than most Cotes du Rhone, a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and the balance a mix of Cinsault and Syrah, Vignon's Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes offers a richness in flavor and mouth feel not found in wines in this price point, thanks of course to the lovely Mourvedre Grape. It was a perfect pair with a grilled Tri-Tip steak this past weekend. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

2016 Xavier Vignon Cotes du Rhone Rouge Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Organic...$19.99
A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault and Syrah, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Vieilles Vignes offers a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, blueberries, lavender, cured meats, and graphite. It's deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a great finish. The Mourvèdre keeps this tight and fresh, and I suspect it will age beautifully.

Mourvedre
Some amazing wines made from Mourvèdre include Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée and Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol

Plus some of the greatest Chateauneuf du Papes...
Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape has 30% Mourvedre in the blend and their amazing "Tete de Cuvee" Hommage de Jacques Perrin can have up to 60% Mourvedre.

"The reliance on Mourvèdre makes the blend unique in Châteauneuf. "The Hommage à Jacques Perrin is an homage to Mourvèdre," says Marc Perrin, Jean-Pierre's son, who represents the fifth generation of Perrins to work at the estate, which the family bought in 1909....Hommage normally consists of 60 percent Mourvèdre, 20 percent Grenache, 10 percent Syrah and 10 percent Counoise. (The exception was 1998, when Grenache ripened beautifully and made up 60 percent, compared to 20 percent for Mourvèdre.)"
- -The Wine Spectator

Hommage a Jacques Perrin has scored a perfect 100 from The Wine Advocate 4 times and generally scores 98 or 99 points in the other vintages.  One of the greatest wines in the world is made from 60% Mourvedre
