Penfolds Winery

2016 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz...$49.99
The personality of this warmer-vintage Bin 389 is big, bold and welcoming. Coal smoke and graphite intertwine with blackberry, cassis, woody and leafy notes. Some Chinese five spice, too. The palate is delivered with fine, sweeping and long, smooth tannins that carry a supple array of mainly blackberry and roasted-coffee flavors. Powerful yet silky, super long and smooth, building to an exceptionally tidy finish. This is an assembly of 51 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 49 per cent shiraz, sourced from Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. Long aging potential. Drink now or hold.

2016 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon...$65.99
Youthful cabernet style here, showing plenty of blackcurrants and a tarry edge with dried plums, some raisins, mint and sweetly fragrant oak spices. The palate is very smooth and juicy. The fully ripe tannins are super fluid and open-knit, delivering a silky and approachable style. Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Padthaway fruit sourcing. Drink now or hold.

2015 Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay...$39.99
A result of a warmer-than-average spring and a cooler-than-average summer in 2015, this has a very compelling array of ripe nectarines, peaches and mangoes on the nose with hints of lemon butter and lime zest as well as bath salts. The oak is assertive but well matched by the fruit intensity. The palate's framed in fine, fresh acidity, while white-peach and yellow-grapefruit flavors run the distance with smooth build and some gentle honey and praline. This is neatly balanced, cleanly flavored and very attractive. Drink now.

2015 Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling...$39.99
A stunning vintage for the Eden Valley and this has beautiful aromatic purity, bathed in lime and lemon, some riper stone fruit aromas too, all wrapped in fragrant floral perfume. The palate has a striking mix of power and flesh, the concentration is impressive, it has layers and layers of powerful fruit. The finest Bin 51 to date! Drink now or cellar, tuck it away and return after 2020.

Grandfather Tawny Port...$99.99
The 20 year old Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny is a pale tawny color with a touch of brick. On the nose it is a bit spirituous and shows notes of raisins and fruit cake, some hazelnut and crème brulée. The palate shows even more nuttiness and depth along with greater freshness and acidity, though it seems drier than the Father. It finishes very long almost like a sweet oloroso or amontillado.
Rated 92/100 The Wine Advocate
