“If I have to recycle my declaration of adoration with respect to Domaine Hubert Lignier, then so be it. If God made wine for a reason, then it was for wines like these.”-Neal Martin The Wine Advocate
"While his wines are hard to find, this is a small grower to search out." -- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Grand Cru Burgundy is getting increasinly hard to find and even harder to afford. These are wines that require the patience of Job to be able to drink at their peak maturity, which is why we are thrilled to offer a set of wines from Hubert Lignier with up to 30yrs of bottle age. All of these wines have come direct from the Domaine through Importer Neal Rosenthal. All are single bottle offerings.
Yes, 30 year old Burgundy!!!! In Magnum!
1986 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche...$800 / 1.5 liter
This formidable Grand Cru has always been the standard bearer of the Lignier domaine. I frequently joke to Hubert Lignier that the only mistake I ever witnessed him commit was his decision to sell of his 1981 Clos de la Roche to negociants because he thought it wasn’t up to his standards. This is a complete wine marked by somber black fruits and firm yet subtle tannins; it has exceptional breed and fine aging potential. Our personal collection dates back to the first vintage we purchased from Hubert Lignier: 1978 … and it is still a marvel to behold. The Ligniers own one hectare in Clos de la Roche. - Neal Rosenthal
1995 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche...$2200 / 3 liter
This dark ruby-colored wine (originally rated 93-95 in Issue #111) displays enthralling scents of candied hazelnuts, stones, fresh herbs, blackberries, blueberries, plums, and wet gravel basking in the sun. It is just as extraordinary and complex on the palate as it is aromatically, offering an awesomely intense, broad, and expansive character. This full-bodied, mouth-coating, oily-textured, and juicy yet immensely rich wine is redolent with blackberry, cassis, cedar, stone, and briery flavors. Its stunningly long finish offers copious quantities of fruit complemented by supple tannins.
Rated 97/100 The Wine Advocate
1996 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche...$950 / 1.5 liter
Ruby-red. Profound aromas of raspberry syrup, jammy black cherry, roasted coffee and game. A silky wine with great extract and sweetness. Explosive fruit is completely primary and pristine yet offers considerable early accessibility. Ultimately denser than the '97. This is showing fabulously well today-it's far more tasteable than the extraordinary '93 was at the same stage-but I'd lay it down for at least seven or eight years.
Rated 95/100 Stephen Tanzer
1998 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche...$850 / 1.5 liter
Deep, bright red-ruby color. Knockout nose combines roasted plum, currant, bitter chocolate, roast coffee and clove. Silky and mouthfilling, with a compelling, penetrating sweetness. Has huge extract to buffer the strong but ripe tannins. Very long, slow-mounting finish saturates the entire palate. A superb vintage for this wine, but this '98 will require a good eight to ten years of patience.
Rated 93+/100 Stephen Tanzer
2007 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche...$800 / 1.5 liter
This possesses the most complex nose in the range with blue and black berry aromas that run toward cassis with background notes of stone and plum that are in perfect keeping with the naturally sweet, textured and palate staining big-bodied flavors that culminate in a mentholated, tangy and long finish that appears to have enough underlying material to eventually round out
Rated 91/100 Allen Meadows Burghound
2000 Hubert Lignier Gevrey Chambertin Aux Combottes...$475 / 1.5 liter
Good medium red. Fresh aromas of raspberry, black cherry, minerals and spices, with a floral nuance. Juicy, intense and penetrating, with berry and spice flavors of noteworthy purity. Really spreads out over the palate. Finishes strong but subtle, with a hint of game and excellent length.
Rated 92/100 Stephen Tanzer
2001 Hubert Lignier Morey St Denis V.V... $400 / 1.5 liter
Dark red. Flamboyant aromas of currant, smoke, roasted nuts, beefsteak tomato and underbrush; very Morey-Saint-Denis. Then impressively round, supple and full for the vintage, with fresh red fruit flavors and harmonious acidity. Not particularly sweet but rich for the year. Finishes with round, ripe tannins and excellent length.
Rated 91/100 Stephen Tanzer
