Cleveland, Wisconsin

Saxon Cheeses
Saxon Creamery from Cleveland, Wisconsin.
We are very excited about these cheeses because they are delicious and the dairy has told us that we are the first to bring them into St. Louis. We are very proud to intoduce these cheeses to STL.

Big Eds
Young, mild, but full of flavor, with a buttery body. Enthusiastic, like Ed Klessig, whom it was named after, it hugs you back, never offends, and is great both for first time tasters and afficionados.
A “clean rind” cheese made from raw cow’s milk formed into cooked, pressed curds and ripened 120 days, with a shelf life of six months — clean rind cheeses are meticulously wiped to keep them clean, cultivating a nearly perfect rind.

Green Fields
Sweet nutty tones vary with the seasons. A semi-soft washed rind from raw cow's milk, carefully tended for 70 days then wrapped in a special breathable package for its journey from our creamery to you.
Made from whole raw cow’s milk, and unpressed cooked curds, with a washed rind ripened a minimum of 60 days — at its peak at four months with a shelf life of six months.
Great for melting, blending in salad dressings, or at snack and meal-time on the family table. Flavors will vary subtly with the seasons.

La Clare Farm Evalon
Saxon Creamery partners with LaClare Farm and their luscious milk, turning it into a supple, smooth, sweet, unique, delicious raw goat milk cheese, aged over 70 days.
The Hedrich′s dream of raising a family for generations on the farm, producing the freshest cleanest most delicious goat milk from healthy does fed on whole grains is tenderly transformed into a delicious raw milk semi-soft wheel.A divine cooking cheese to melt on any food, with a fresh herb like sage, or to grate shred or slice.

Pastures
A meaty cheese, young, but dense, mellow but full of flavor, creamy, with a sweet taste that lingers. Bandaged wrapped raw milk cheese aged 120 days.Great for slicing, grating, cubing or melting or more simply, on the table as a family friend.

Couple of quick notes...

We have a Scotch Class scheduled with Ed Kohl, of Signatory. March 19th at 6pm. $15/person. Hopefully will have more details the first week of March.

Beer Closeout!
The distributor is discontinuing Barons from Australia...
We have 40 cases coming on Tuesday 2/24/09.
It went "out of date" on Aug 2008. We tasted it though, and it still tastes fine. It has lost the hop flavor and is just malty. Hard to pass up for $2.99 / 6pk
Barons ESB....$2.99 / 6pk
"A real bitter, for those that warrant the finest." This inaugural Barons Extra Special Bitter (ESB) is an English style 'special' bitter produced by Australians for Australians. At 4.7% ABV, Barons ESB pours with a brilliant golden colour, topped with a rich cream head. The aroma offers an inviting mix of caramel and malt, combined with hop driven fruit resulting in a 'crisp' and full nose made to drive the senses in the heat of an Aussie summer. Barons ESB offers a rewarding balance of caramel malt sweetness supported by medium - high bitterness. The chosen noble hops deliver subtle fruit and spice character, accenting the enjoyable bitterness. With medium body and carbonation, Barons ESB is the real beer experience." -- brewery

Coming back to STL

I am very excited on about this one. This is one of the first beers that got me interested in beer almost 20 years ago. I was very intrigued by it when I first started working here.
ETA looks to be around spring time.
(It has been years since they have been distributed here)
Corsendonk Abbey Brown Ale
A Classic Belgian Abbey Dubbel
Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale
A Classic Belgian Abbey Tripel
"Corsendonk Abbey in Oud-Turnhout, Belgium was founded through the munificence of Maria van Gelre, youngest daughter of Jan III, Duke of Brabant. You may recall that Jan I (Jan Primus) is today better known as Gambrinus. The monks of Corsendonk started a brewery in 1400, which flourished until 1784 when the abbey was closed by Austrian ruler Jozef II." -- importer

Thomas Hardy’s Ale
The Legendary Vintage Ale of Dorset
"Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade." -- importer
.
.
There are some other beers associated with this importer that we might see also...
Royal Oak, Old Izaak, O'Hanlens, Old Jock, Merlin's Ale, Black Douglas, Kinmount Willie Scottish Oatmeal Stout...not sure what all we will see.
Read about the beers on the importers website.
Leave me a comment about which others you would like to see and we can see if we can get the importer to bring them to St. Louis.

New release from Texas

Shiner Commemorator.....$6.99 / 6pk
This is Spoetzl Brewery's 100th Anniversary Beer (1909-2009)
Doppelbock Style
"Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 %" -- Brewery

Tiny Danish brewer...

Boegedal Bryghus -- Craft brewer from Denmark
There is a maximum of 700 bottles made in each batch.
Free Falling Brewery
"Bøgedal is an atypical brewery in that it is Scandinavian’s only Free Fall Brewery. The beer runs from cask to cask by help of pulleys and level differentiation… without the use of pumps, and the herb is cooked over an open fire. Because of the delicate methods in use, Bøgedal can produce a nearly clear beer without filtration, thereby retaining many of the important flavours and aromas." -- importer

Boegedal Bryghus No .130...$26.99 / 750ml
"Golden ale with Centennial, Perle & Tettnang 5,8%. Dark golden beer with creamy head. Aromatic Smell like a double IPA. Aroma and smell of extreme hoop compared to a normal Bøgedal beer -properly because of the used of Centennial hoop as bitter hoop. A sense of sweet licorice . An exceptional good beer for enjoinment after dinner." -- importer

Boegedal Bryghus No. 103....$26.99 / 750ml
Boegadal Bryghus No. 153...$26.99 / 750ml
(same beer -- different batch #s, same recipe, however like a true vintage each batch will be somewhat different in flavor & aroma profile due to the very unique brewing process of Boegedal.)
"Dark Ale with Northern Brewer, Orange, Brown Sugar 6.3% Dark-brown beer with a dark-brown head. Smells sweet of prunes and citrus with an acidic tip. It fills the palate with its sweetness, and opens up into a pleasant bitterness. Hangs in the mouth like a dark chocolate with a faint smoky aftertaste. Goes well with venison and chestnuts, blackberries and brussell sprouts, smoked or salted meats." -- importer
"JyllandsPosten -- Bøgedal No. 103, 6.3% -- Of course, there come charming brewers out of the Vejle River Valley. Brewer Casper Vorting has found a magical formula for beer, that justifies that it is also Denmark’s most costly. He doesn’t try to interpret an IPA, a monastery brew, a Bock, or for that matter any other of the many beer types. Beer from Bøgedal is Bøgedal Beer in their own, styled fashion. No. 103 – the number signifies the succession in order of brews – is like most Bøgedals round, soft, vitally emotional and discreetly seductive. With a hint of Porter, a bit of chocolate and zesty orange, coupled with a 6.3% kick, it has a bit more of a love-bite than the brewers other passionate undertakings. 6 out of 6 stars” -- importer

Boegedal Bryghus No. 156 Pale Ale....$26.99 / 750ml
"Pale Ale, Pearl, Cascade 5.9% ABV. Light amber, small, compact bubbles and creamy head. Aromatic sweetness with traces of honey, wheat and fine wine. A wonderful latent sweetness and bitterness with a taste of citrus. Good body, balanced and comfortable. Goes well with an informal get-together, but also with classical white meats and poultry, yams, pasta, mushrooms or mature, but mild, port cheeses.

Jan Filipe, Barley Wine, describes a Bøgedal Beer like this: “…is the only one in Denmark, maybe in all of Scandinavia, that is remarkably singular, finding no points of reference among its fellows. Were we to find a parallel in the world of wines, it could be nothing less than a “Pingus-beer”. The world famous Danish Newspaper, Jyllands Posten, short and sweet, describes Bøgedal Beer as, “…a world-class brew with depth and originality”, and ranks the brewery among the top 5 best breweries in the country in 2007." -- importer

Brouwerij de Glazen Toren

Toren makes some amazing beers.
Here are a few that we have in stock now!

Canaster Winter Scotch Ale...$11.99 / 750ml
Almost gone for the year, it is available November to February
"Canaster, a subtle Winter Scotch, is the third beer from the brewery. This beer is only available from November till February. Yet it was a definite choice to avoid any clear reference to Christmas or New Year in the name. On the other hand the name Canaster clearly refers to an ancient brewing tradition of Aalst. Centuries ago Canaster was brewed in the Carmelite convent in Aalst. The archeological site was recently uncovered and is the subject of an historical investigation. Canaster now relives as a Winter Scotch, a beer for the long, cold winter evenings. Here the same natural ingredients are used as in the two other products of the brewery, including the Hallertau hop from the Aalst area. This beer with a 9.5 % alc. vol. owes its warm aroma and its full-bodied taste to the use of fine, dark malts (caramel). The same 25.4 oz. bottles are used but the wrapper is white, red and green. The brewery offers a special winter glass for this beer. The logo of the brewery has here been transformed into a winter scene." -- importer

Toren Jan de Lichte Imperial White Ale...$11.99 / 750ml
"Jan De Lichte is the fourth and the latest beer of brewery De Glazen Toren. Again the name refers to local history. In the 18th century Jan De Lichte was the leader of an infamous gang of robbers in the region of Aalst – Zottegem. He was executed in Aalst at the age of 25.The beer was developed only very recently (May 2005). As it is brand new it has not got a wrapper yet. It was first introduced to the public during a two-day beer Festival in West-Flanders in early June 2005.Jan De Lichte is a wit beer. But following ancient tradition we are using four grains beer: Barley and wheat are used of course, but there is also oats and buckwheat.Jan De Lichte is the only Glazen Toren beer to which spices are added, following the Belgian tradition of wheat beer brewing. The use of coriander and curaçoa makes for the extremely fresh, citrus-like taste. The rather high alcohol percentage (7.5 %) indicates that it is more than just a thirst quencher. Quite like Jan De Lichte himself some 250 years ago, the beer is not innocuous." -- importer
Beer Advocate -- "A-" excellent w/ 35 Reviews

Cuvee Angelique Historic Recipe...$11.99 / 750 ml
"The “Speciale Belge” beer style was created in 1904 for a brewing contest that was organized by the Universities of Belgium. The goal was to improve the quality of Belgian beer. The winner was a new style, called “Belge”. Due to the success in the contest, a number of brewers decided to brew the style and called it “Speciale Belge”.
A “Speciale Belge” is pale amber in color (slighly darker than a pilsner) as brewers tried to copy the color of pilsner in a top fermenting ale. Later the color became darker as pilsners became very common to prove that the style is something special." - importer
Beer Advocate -- "A" --outstanding w/ 17 Reviews

Toren Saison d'Erpe-Mere.....$11.99 / 750ml
"The Saison was the first beer of the brewery.Saison is a blonde beer brewed according to the ancient Saison tradition of the province of Hainaut. The French sounding name of the beer clearly refers to this.Saison d’ Erpe-Mere is brewed exclusively with natural ingredients: artesian water, barley and wheat malts, liquid sugar, hops and yeast. The result is a dry, hoppy, fruity and slightly veiled beer with 7.5 % alc. vol." -- importer
Beer Advocate "A" -- excellent w/ 75 Reviews
.
Toren Ondineke Tripel....$11.99 / 750ml
"Ondineke, subtitle Oilsjtersen Tripel (Tripel from Aalst) was the second beer of De Glazen Toren introduced under its own label.Ondineke derives its name from the main character of the most famous novel of the most renowned author of Aalst ( De Kapellekensbaan by Louis Paul Boon, translated into English in the early seventies as “Chapel Road”). A statue of Ondineke can be found at the entrance of the City Hall of Aalst. Ondineke is a classic tripel, brewed in the ancient way, again with exclusive natural ingredients: artesian water, malt (barley), hops, yeast and liquid candy sugar. As in the Saison no spices are added. Ondineke is an unfiltered top fermenting beer. It is soft, creamy, and of golden color. It is double hopped with the last real hops available from the region of Aalst (The variety is Hallertau Mittelfrüh). Just like the Saison, Ondineke is bottled in 25.4 oz. bottles. The self-designed wrapper is white, yellow and red (the city colours of Aalst).Ondineke has a positive taste evolution and the bottles are best kept standing in a cool, dark place. It is best before two years after the bottling date. 8.5 % alc.vol. makes this a beer to be savoured. Preferably Ondineke is to be served at a temperature between 6 to 10° C. Moreover Ondineke is at its best when served in the originally designed Glazen Toren glass.

Wintercoat -- small Danish brewery.

More just arrived!

Wintercoat Vildmoseol....$17.99 / 750ml
Peat Smoked Ale
"Don't try to pronounce the name of this beer without at least one under your belt! This beer was brewed for the Lille Vildmose nature center in northern Jutland. The area is characterised by peat bogs, which inspired this brown ale with its subtle notes of peat-smoked malt, the fresh, spiciness of bog myrtle and the bittersweet fruitiness of rowan berries. These 3 ingredients harmonise beautifully with the other malts and hops used. A wonderful beer to drink with game, lamb and braised meats - and it does justice to pickled herring as well!" - importer

Featured in Sauce Magazine online

"The WinterCoat brewery is a family-owned and operated brewery situated on an old farm just outside of the village of Sabro in Denmark. Niels J. Thomsen, owner and brewer, was born in the farmhouse. The brewery has a capacity of 8 hectolitres, and we can brew this 4 times a week." -- importer

A new one from Wintercoat...
Wintercoat Double Hop....$17.99 / 750ml
"WinterCoat's Imperial IPA is light amber in color. The fruitiness from the ale yeast combines beautifully with the body of the malts and the freshness of the hops to create a very well-balanced, though very heavily hopped brew. Double Hop has a heady hop aroma without too much bitterness. The smooth taste belies its 8.2% alcohol content. This beer is dangerously pleasant to drink!" -- importer

Hard cider...

Sarasola Sagardoa Hard Cider...$9.99 / 750ml
"Sarasola Sagardoa is a traditional Basque cider from a cider house located in the apple growing hills of Astigarraga.

Pouring & Serving: Since Basque cider is “natural” and not sparkling the cider is poured by holding the bottle up high above the head and pouring into a glass that is held just below waiste level. Pouring from elevation allows the cidre to pick up some natural carbonation when it hits the glass. Sarasola Sagardotegi is located in the apple growing hills of Astigarraga, which is in the Basque Country region of Spain, near San Sebastian." - importer

"Most Basque cider, as indeed most cider varieties in Spain, is called "natural" because unlike many other European varieties it is still, not sparkling. It normally contains 4-6% alcohol and is served directly from the barrel in a sagardotegi.
The more recent traditions surrounding the sagardotegis hail back to the time when buyers interested in purchasing cider from a particular maker would bring along food for the tasting as it is considered best when taken with a meal.
This soon evolved into gastronomical tradition with the sagardotegis becoming a cross between a grill and a cider house. In a traditional sagardotegi, three courses are taken:
* starter: a cod omelette or cod with peppers
* main: a steak
* desert: cheese (often Idiazabal cheese), quince and nuts" -- importer

Roquefort might be gone for awhile...

Get your fill of Roquefort cheese before March 1, 2009. The U.S. has imposed a 300 percent duty tax on Roquefort because of the European Union ban on U.S. beef. We just got word from one of our distributors, that told us we will not see Roquefort because of the price.

Excerpt from The Washington Post
"The United States, it turns out, has declared war on Roquefort cheese. In its final days, the Bush administration imposed a 300 percent duty on Roquefort, in effect closing off the U.S. market. Americans, it declared, will no longer get to taste the creamy concoction that, in its authentic, most glorious form, comes with an odor of wet sheep and veins of blue mold that go perfectly with rye bread and coarse red wine.
The measure, announced Jan. 13 by U.S. Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab as she headed out the door, was designed as retaliation for a European Union ban on imports of U.S. beef containing hormones. Tit for tat, and all perfectly legal under World Trade Organization rules, U.S. officials explained.
Besides, they said, Roquefort is only one of dozens of European luxury products that were attacked with high tariffs. The list includes, among other things, French truffles, Irish oatmeal, Italian sparkling water and "fatty livers of ducks and geese...." -- The Washington Post

We want Stone...

Somebody posted in the comments --
"Why Tommyknocker? How about Stone? With all the new brands coming in ahead of the beer season some of these brands are going to get lost on the shelf." -- anonymous

I email Stone every few months trying to convince them to come to St. Louis and that St. Louis is a great craft beer town. We would love to get Stone here, but it is not as easy as just calling them and placing an order. They have to want to come to St. Louis and get registered with the state. I still believe if we email them enough they will come here...
Check out my post from February 2nd and email them.

Help get Stone Brewing to St. Louis...

We need to try to push Stone Brewing into distributing in St. Louis.
I think if we give them a nudge with emails showing our desire to get "Arrogant" in St. Louis it might happen. I have sent my email!
Send them an email----
email@stonebrew.com

This is on their website:
"How to get the Arrogance in your area:
This proceedure can potentially take a bit of time and effort, but success will be its own reward.

In order for Stone or Arrogant Bastard Ale to be available in a particular area, it is necessary to obtain an existing distributor of beer for the that area. This is often problematic. Most distributors are overloaded with items and have scant time to review and analyze new things. Much of their decision making is based upon "old-boy" contacts. As you might guess, brash young upstarts like us at Stone are not part of the old-boy networks.

Every time we contact the distributors in a new area, we get comments like "We're overloaded on items," "We don't have the time to consider something new right now," and "I've never heard of Arrogant Bastard Ale, [I cannot imagine somebody saying this] besides people want imports right now and that 22oz micro segment is dying." How sad for them to be so unaware of the Arrogance.

We have won out over Ignorance in many areas based upon the following theories:
(1) Smart business people listen to their customers. (2) Most distributors are actually fairly smart people, and their customers are pubs, restuarants and markets. (3) If these customers are asking for the Arrogant Bastard Ale, the distributor will be more interested in carrying the beer.

Of course, this only happens because the customers of these bars, restaurants and markets are demanding the Arrogance! If enough people ask often enough, the message will eventually get through to the powers that be.

Don't be shy. Let your message be clear. Tell the MANAGEMENT (don't waste too much time talking about the Arrogance to non decision makers) at your favorite pubs, restaurants and markets that you would like them to ask their distributors for Arrogant Bastard Ale. In the meantime, you'll get it through mail-order or other methods which means lost dollars for them. Always make
sure that you are polite with your request. Remember, there is a fine line between being an Arrogant Bastard and an Obnoxious one. Smart managers won't be interested in going out of there way to bring something in for somebody who
is a jerk." -- Stone Brewing

Thanks for helping to spread the Arrogance! - Stone
